Thank you! Thank you Thank you! I have been carnivore for 6 months. Just had my bloodwork done and my LDL increased substantially from last October. My current numbers would make someone’s eyes pop. I’m 55 yo female 5’0 and 100lbs. My HDL is 121, triglycerides 74, and LDL 309 for a whopping high score of 438 total cholesterol. I feel fabulous. I lost 15lbs, eat to satiation (much more food than before) and I lift heavy weights twice a week and walk/move daily. Carnivore has changed my life!

I also have high LDL, although I'm really healthy in every other category. My doctor wanted to put me on a statin. Finding Dave helped me get educated and relieved that LDL, on it's own, is not pathogenic. Just like Dave, my triglycerides are low, HDL higher and I'm a LMHR. Even got a Coronary Arterial Calcium test and my score was a perfect zero, meaning zero plaque. Fortunately, I've remained statin-free, low carb, and feeling great! Thanks for hosting Dave!

I am a congestive heart failure patient who was once very overweight and unfit. Not once did any healthcare professional suggest weight loss and exercise. Instead, I was placed on seven different medications, including statins, steroids, and beta blockers. Over two months, I gained weight and felt like a zombie. I decided to remove all but two of the medications against advice, started exercising, changed my diet, lost 5 stone, and my ejection fraction rose from 10 percent to 45 percent over 5 months. I discharged my nurse when she claimed that the improvement was due to the medications! True story.

This is me. I started keto in January doing it for metastatic breast cancer. I feel sooo awesome on a keto diet. No evidence of disease. Feel healthier than before. My onco order a lipid panel because I’m on keto and medications can raise cholesterol… well my cholesterol sky rocketed at 376! It shook me but I’m watching all of you and hopeful I don’t have to worry. My triglycerides are totally normal (lower side) and VLDL is low. I’m worried what my doctors are going to tell me. 😢

Hey Doc! Just poping here to give my thanks for your work. I've bcame a carnivore a month ago. I've suffered from Sleep Apnea for about 5 years. I've suffered from acid reflux for about15 years, taking pills every day. I've suffered from seborrhea over my head and face for about 30 years. I'm 37 years old and, in one month I no longer taking Reflux pills, my snoring went down from 4 hours per night to 2 hours with no more obstructive apnea, I lost 8kg (~17 pounds) and I'm no longer using any seborrhea shampoos and lotions. I was somehow afraid to start doing this due to all of this "Cholesterol" and "Balanced" meal crap and now, after 4 weeks doing it, I feel good like I never felt before. I'll never eat carbs again in my life. Thank you Doc!

The cholesterol model is so archaic. Had blood work at Kaiser in February with LDL in the 300's with high HDL and low TRI. I refused the statin suggested to me via a phone call. Six months later, I get a text saying the doctor added a statin to my medications and it's ready for pick up. This was done without updated blood work. No doubt she was audited and was directed to get me on a statin ASAP. Her nurse called a day later to tell me the medication is ready for pick up. Again, I refused and asked her to remove it. All this took place the day after I requested to change to a new primary doctor because I refuse to get pressured by an obese doctor who is obviously stuck in this archaic model and has zero curiosity to get beyond the pharmaceutical push set by health"care".

If you go to the low carb down under page, the cholesterol model Dr Mason uses has the emphasis on low triglycerides and high HDL. He doesn’t even worry about LDL level because so many studies associate high LDL with longevity if triglycerides are low and HDL is good. And LDL really depends on the particle size which most doctors never mention. Sounds like your overall ratios are in the good range and you absolutely did the right thing to ignore the push for statins :)

Per Dr Berry there are 2 tests fructosamine or glycated albumin which are better indicators since A1c is calculated from glycated red blood cells. Since you are LC your red blood cells live longer and have more opportunity to become glycated which can indicate a false higher measurement.

I just read this review of Cholesterol and my take is there is a disconnect between the role of Cholesterol and the arterial environment associated with heart disease, specifically heart attacks. For example, I mentioned to my cardiologist that there was a study that basically said people who present with heart attacks have generally normal cholesterol levels. I now ask cardiologist why I had gotten clogs in my heart & I get different answers. I consider myself a scientist and I know there is variation given studies, but you'd think the 'why' of heart attacks would be relatively the same.

Every test is just a snapshot in time. I've argued this for MANY years with doctors wanting to prescribe meds to me based on one test result.. I've insisted re-testing and shown them how my test results changed over a day or two and refused the meds for thyroid, cholesterol, BP - - my tests were w/in normal range a couple hours/days later. My GP Dr was very angry and nearly yelled at me. She said, 'I write prescriptions! That's what I've done for 20 years!! If you're not going to take the meds, WHY ARE YOU HERE?!' I asked her to explain what caused the tests to vary so much? What caused the changes? What had I done differently ? She became exasperated and listed me as a difficult patient.

This is just great stuff. I am also an engineer, and can relate to the idea of determining what, and then trying to figure out why. As I navigate the path of trying to figure this stuff out by pure youtube research (mostly), which is kind of like trying to learn how to play poker without knowing the "values" of any of the cards, nor combos, etc. I assume that all (or almost all) researchers have valid results, but that they are each missing some part of the big picture that makes their subset (i.e., conclusions) seem correct. As an uneducated (in the medical field) person, I am wondering if "hyper-responders" are simply people who are not metabolically unhealthy. [Or, are the genetically different, or just epigenetically different, in terms of which genes are activated. Could they be "made" through some trigger?] I have not followed Dave for the last few years, so I will definitely have to catch up on that. Thanks for all you are doing, both of you!

There is also another point - insurance is VERY heavily regulated - and no State Insurance Department would allow this to be approved as a product. Also, understand that Insurance is a "defensive" industry - if they try to be the leading edge they get destroyed in court by the Legal Industry - who would believe that an insurance company knows better than the medical industry? Regardless of the numbers that they can show. Unfortunately, this battle HAS to be fought (and won) in the Medical Industry - the Insurance Industry can not go against what the Medical Industry recommends without the Legal Industry absolutely destroying it in court.

I have been Keto/Carnivore for 6 years. My LDL stays between 90-130, my HDL normally stays in the 80's, and my Triglycerides(T) will between 30 and 70. When I am fasting my T goes down and my LDL will be higher. I have had so many docs tell me I need statins, because my LDL came back over 100, especially after my stroke last October, which I have made a full recovery from. I will not take that poison. I will be like well I am not fasting today so take it now. I will have a little higher T and my LDL will be down. One doc was like okay. My LDL came back at 95 and my T came back a 66. He was amazed. I have also noticed that stress, lack of a good night sleep, or a day after having a stroke, or even just getting off of a scary roller coaster will make my LDL spike up. I had a complete heart workup, stress test, nuke scan, ultrasound of my heart and neck, a CTA scan, and a CAC Score, to try to find the source of the clot for my stroke. It showed absolutely no blockages and my CAC score was 0. I was surprised, I'm 50 and I was an Extreme diabetic for 20 years. I weighed 200 lbs more. I am still not lean, but I am big muscular guy. I was on over 300 units of insulin per day and still had A1C's in the 14's at the end of it.

when I went off my statin of 4 years, lost weight and went low carb my LDL shot from pre-statin level of 160 to post statin (w weight loss) to 255 with HDL staying the same but triglycerides lowered and triglyceride/HDL ratio 1.55 (84/54). and my dr called me phenotypic FH and tested for LPa and found 468nmolar. so was sent for CAC score which came back at 167. at age 66 , no events yet. I just don't feel like adding carbs to get bloodwork done. so now I have a dr that yells at me and says I am going to be paralyzed from a stroke.

Smoothed down to 20g keto but never fully converted to fat burning, or couldn't eat enough fat. In 4 weeks I thought I had MS, heart failure, chronic fatigue syndrome, cancer and statin myopathy all in one. Ate 2 potatoes and some popcorn -150g - and was reborn overnight. 70 years old, and probably slow to adapt, but won't go below 200g again. This pear tastes so good right now.

Your electrolytes were probably WAY off! Low carb is very dehydrating. Must add salt and other electrolytes. I started cold turkey with a 24 hour fast, to boot. I had similar issues. But I powered through because I was dropping weight as desired. Once I added salt, some bone broth, etc, I did much better.

I’ve never had my blood work done. This is deliberate. I think far more important to assess how we feel. Now 60+ I’m finally biting the bullet and going to a cardiologist. I know the trick to carb up a little so the glucose tolerance test doesn’t show crazy glucose levels because no stored insulin in beta cells. Is there an equivalent “cheat” for LDL? I’m not concerned by triglycerides/HDL as I’ve been strict carnivore for 3+ months. I’m guessing 24 hr fast after overeating keto some days prior would help? I would like to ace my first ever blood panel tests 😊

Even if docs got nutrition education the problems are 1) they'll likely be taught the orthodox dogma (which achieves nothing good), and 2) most insurers (and other health funders) refuse to pay for the little extra time needed to communicate the message. I know you guys were looking at this as a variation in readings compared to when you ate experiment. But what I notice most is the effect the time of day the blood draw happens has. That appears to be more pronounced than the variation caused by eating? If the change was due to eating, shouldn't there be a more noticeable time shift in the highs and lows? This whole issue needs more research 😃

Regardless of what other people say, I have had significant improvements on a 20 or less carbs DV and in conjunction with fasting most of the day with only 2 meals between 8am and 7pm. Meaning I eat brunch between 8am and 10am, then I will fast until dinner around 6pm. I eat meat and animal products for brunch and at dinner time I will add salad or small amounts of keto friendly produce. I do try to take some electrolyte supplement at or right before brunch as it kick-starts my appetite. I'm healing and that's all that matters to me. Thank you for sharing the truth!!!🎉
