🎂 Happy Birthday Dr. Westman! 🎉 July 1, 2022 will be 4 years on keto/very low carb for me. Reversed diabetes quickly & totally! A1c now 5.0! Also Lost 68# & lots of aches & pains gone after only a short time on plan! I didn’t think I could do it either, but when A1c went from pre-diabetic into diabetic status-I went against endocrinologist’s plan to put me on meds & so glad I did. You should’ve seen his face when I went back after 6 mo. on Keto! He asked, “What happened!! You’ve lost almost 70 pounds!” I told him “I used my common sense & went on keto-& as you can see-all my labs are wonderful!” He said “Your glucose is in the ‘normal range’ for the first time in 22 years!!” (Yes, nay-sayer docs, Keto actually works!!) 😘

I appreciate and agree with your "brand" of keto Dr. So far, I have lost 120 lbs, A1c was 15, and now is 6.4. I went from 23 prescriptions down to 7. I still have a ways to go, but at least I can see a light at the end of the tunnel, and I know it's not a train. Please keep the grass roots going. You are helping more people than most. Thank you.

Yay to Spam! I am born and raised in Hawaii and grew up eating Spam alot. Spam is so popular here that you can order it for breakfast at McDonald's in Hawaii. There's also a really popular sausage called Portuguese Sausage that you can order for breakfast at McDonald's here too. I loved to order Spam & Scrambled Eggs at McDonald's for breakfast when I used to eat breakfast. I've tried to get ppl to switch to Keto but a lot of times ppl will say " I could never stop eating bread!" Or whatever it is that they cannot live without that's not allowed on Keto. Nowadays it's way easier to do Keto than it was when I first did Atkins. There were hardly any substitutes, websites, youtube, restaurants, recipes. My brother in law is diabetic and I tried to get my sister to get both of them to try keto when I first started. But now I think it's too late. He goes to dialysis.

I haven’t heard anyone address the absurd price of meat, including poultry, fish and eggs. I live in Southern California and here are a few examples of Walmart weekly add (Walmart one of the cheapest here): ground beef 80/20 $5.99/ lb, 73/27% grad beef 4.99/lb. , bacon $6.98/lb (average), eggs $5.80/dozen (not organic), ground turkey $8.09/lb, avacados $1.99 EACH, blueberries $4.60 for 4oz, cucumber $.99 each, broccoli $2.29/lb, cauliflower for one lg head $4.51, gr giant frozen riced cauliflower $4.99/10oz. You get the picture😥. I’m on fixed income social security and I am no longer able to afford all the protein needed. Any advice would be helpful.
@marymccombs8289
@marymccombs8289 2 жыл бұрын
The prices aren't as high here in the midwest, but I have the same issue. The cheap filler foods I used to buy to stretch my fixed income budget are not allowed on keto - rice, beans, pasta. Even so, I'm finding a way (with a little help from family) because keto cured my diabetes. Went from 7.9 to 5.3 in less 6 months and lost 40 pounds. I'm hoping to get off blood pressure meds some day, but keto doesn't seem to be helping with that much yet. I'm hoping that it will come down as I lose more weight.

@@marymccombs8289 May I ask how you are adapting or managing keto with today’s prices. Keto also reversed my type 2diabetes and helped arthritic joint pain immensely, but sadly I’m slowly gaining weight and pain because I simply can’t afford it.

@marymccombs8289 2 жыл бұрын
@@S.Kay.Steffy I don't eat a real wide variety of food. I use cauliflower, or zucchini a lot as filler food. If you Chop up the cauliflower, it tends to take on the flavor of the food it's cooked in. I buy the cheaper hamburger and drain the grease off. Since I can't have beans, I'll chop up some green beans, a small amount of onion, add the hamburger and a can of chopped tomatoes, and add some chili seasonings. I can get 2 or 3 meals from that. I use hamburger, canned tomatoes, a little onion and zuccini with Italian seasonings. I have other things I eat, but i use those 2 recipes a lot. My snack food is usually celery with peanut butter. I probably spend more on food than I should.

I like your approach keeping things simple especially when starting out. I now find it easy to remain low carb and try to pick the best quality food I can afford and have started intermittent fasting as well which has shown great benefits in my health. The first few days were tough but like Dr. Westman states, the hunger does really go away, I feel better since Im eating healthier and once I saw that my bloodwork had improved dramatically since starting this lifestyle there is no going back. And, the bonus is, you're not paying anything for this, not like food weight loss programs etc. The money I would have paid for Jenny Craig, WW, etc, I put in a savings account and use that money for new clothes.

Like so many that praise you, thank you. Keto for almost 4 year and have lost and kept off 35 pounds. You are a continual inspiration and I seldom pass up a new video. One comment that may make you cringe a little. As the family cook in our family I do sometimes wish I could pick up a box and pouch and with relative ease put together a quick and delicious meal. Similarly I wish restaurants would have a couple of good Keto meals without having to pick and choose on the menu. Having recently retired it is not as big an issue, but when working sometimes it got old to make something nice always from scratch. Maybe as Americans the rest of our lifestyle needs to change with our diet, but it sure was harder when I worked. Point being, I wish the marketplace would find a way to help with innovative new Keto products (not the plethora of fakes out there now) that would help those people who just can’t seem to find time to do a sustain a real food Keto diet.

I don't think your version of keto is considered "dirty" keto by internet standards. Other practitioners consider dirty keto include products using net carbs. Include nuts and encourage high fat. I'm in your master class and you call your program prescription strength keto. I finally started losing weight after I gave up nuts and kept my carbs under 20 carbs. So I think your program is similar in theory but more strict.

I am constantly surrounded by odors of pizza and bread. And I tell them it bothers me, but can i really control what they are eating? But i feel it is disrespectul towards me, as i have been on a weight loss journey for over 2 years and have not reached my goal yet(lost 72 pounds, gained a little back, but trying to continue). I had to start keto with exercise, and I have a set goal of no more than 30 carbs/day. My. goal is not to lose weigh, though I have. I was dx with pre diabetes and osteoporosis. I try to get the best products like grass fed, but sometimes I have to scale down because it can be expensive. So I try my best to be clean, but it is not 100%. I do two meals a day, and sometimes one for a 24 hr fast. I have reversed pre diabetes; I still have to see if OP has improved. At least my bones do not ache anymore. I love the miracle noodles! I use some almond flour and walnuts/macadamias, and berries but only sparingly; I have good self control. Thanks for the service of educating us to improve our health.

I started off predominantly on a keto diet such as that described, but I do now disagree about consuming fruits/veggies. I was unaware of oxalates for example, and I once believed in the fibre myth also. Now eating a predominantly carnivorous diet, with virtually zero fruits/veggies/fibre, and no problem at all. Keto was certainly a good start for me, but I feel better now.

I have been doing Keto for a few months now and find it quite easy to follow and lose weight. I have searched some of your videos and don’t see you discussing fiber very often. This is the one issue I have with keto. I feel that fiber is more essential than most Keto programs allow for.

I have noticed that there is not much mentioned anywhere regarding low carb/keto and constipation. When I first started low carb I didn't realise that I could include cheese. I am not a big meat eater so I don't get a lot of protein so I started including more cheese. I always drink plenty of water so it is not due to dehydration. And then I became constipated. I now have 1 1/2Tbspn chia seeds, 1 tspn psyllium husks, 1T pumpkin seeds, 1T sunflower seeds with some slivered almonds for breakfast every day and have found that for the most part that works so long as I don't eat too much cheese. If I inadvertently eat too much cheese I take one senna tablet at night to ensure that I don't get blocked up. I have recently started adding 2 Tbspn of whey protein concentrate to my breakfast and I'm trying to eat more eggs as well.

@@ohyeah3365 I've found in the past that if I take too much psyllium in makes my stool too slimy and it won't separate. I found a video about low carb/keto constipation and they said that if you ever get it bad to take 1T (?) chia seeds and drink lots of water every hour until you go. Thankfully I haven't had to do that because I try to be proactive about it.

@@jobrown8146Yea it's something you have to play with. I know Chia is good for you but it wasn't strong enough for me. When things get slow I take 1 tablespoon of Metamucil for a couple days and then back to one teaspoon every couple of days as a supplement.

I am confused about some of your meat recommendations. It is my understanding that you should avoid processed meats yet you recommend spam and sausages. Are these not processed? How can you determine if a meat is truly processed?

Happy Birthday Dr. Westman. I bought your book last summer and within 3 months I lost 25 pounds. Unfortunately I had some blood work done and my cholesterol was high and my doctor wants me to take atorvastatin. I've read that I may be a hyper-responder to a low carb diet from different doctors here on You-Tube. I don't know if I should continue eating this way. What are your thoughts?

Don't know your numbers, and it usually takes a while, but cholesterol numbers should improve. My total number is slightly high, but the A1c, triglycerides and good cholesterol have all improved a good amount. My doctor freaked out at first, but now that she saw the numbers going down it's good. I'm sure if you look through his videos you will find some on labs that explain better than me.

I think the overall carb count is what the Dr. is aiming at, eating a bit of potato starch won't have the same effect as eating a baked potatoe or french fries. 2 oz of spam has 1 gram of carbs and that is from the sugar. Most processed food has some form of sugar in it, Did you know that corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup can now be listed as "natural flavoring" ? At least spam has listed the form of sugar.

Avoiding fruit is going too far - simply bc it has been part of humanity even before modern vegetables. And as most of us have lived in temperate zones, fruit has been availabe almost year-round -- at the very least for some months. Being on keto 12 months of the year, although doable, is unnatural. Granted that it is the right tool for fixing diseases such as insulin resistance - but once you come back to good health, there is questionable worth in maintaining ketosis for 365-days of the year.

The fruit we did have as hunter gathers was very different from today's fruit. mainly there was seasonal berries no bananas, melons, apples, or oranges. Berries are ok for keto in moderation. and actually there is nothing unatural about being in Ketosis, babies are born into Ketosis and stay that way until they start eating solid foods. I have been in ketosis for over 10 years now and I am in better health than I was in my 30's and 40's.

@@katdoe192 you only need to look 100 years ago .. when there were no chronic illnesses, yet only few people would have been in ketosis. you would have had to be very conscious of diet to maintain k, and this is what i mean by unnatural. sure, in times of crop famine you would be fine being in k .. but it is not a must for good health. winding back the clock to the caveman era introduces much speculation let alone that it ignores valuable more recent data, which tells us being mostly out of k is also perfectly fine .. so long as you avoid foods of modernity (the last century). all this is not saying ketosis is bad for you .. rather that you have to put a conscious effort to maintain it. the fact that it is an unstable equilibrium (a small perturbation takes you out of it, but requires more time to go back) tells me not to worry when out of it, bc the physics of the system implies out is easier than in. glad to hear you are doing fine with it .. but i am willing to bet that is bc you are avoiding the muck shoved down to us by giants of the modern food industry.

@@jjolla6391 If you look back in history you will find that most of our health issues started about 12,00 years ago. Which coincides with the beginning of agriculture ie. grains which =carbs. As far as chronic illnesses even the ancient Egyptians had diabetes. What was different 100 years ago is not the lack of chronic illness. it is the internet which has brought more info to the people.

I think restrictive is the way people look at it. I don't think it's bad for me to be restricted from foods that aren't healthy for me, that trigger my food addictions and binge eating, and that cause me health problems. I actually feel free on keto, not restricted. Free to eat when I'm hungry, free from food addictions and trigger food, free from health issues that once plagued me.
