I followed conventional advice, healthy whole grain, avoid fat, fruit, food pyramid, etc. I got fatter and sicker. One day, I found a posting from an Irish dietision that claimed my problem and the same results. She checked her class notes. One statement from a Bio Chem professor was: Iinsulin is the primary fat storage hormone. She ditched carbs, and all came right. I did the same with the same results. That led to Berry, Baker, Davis, Unwin, Wortman, and others. I'm glad Duke U. has the good sense to keep this excellent doc!

I especially appreciate that Dr Westman is not adversorial. He admits other regimes might work. And he has a good-humored attitude to the structural stupidity of mainstream medicine. Other people get cultish about keto. They'll denounce doctors as "liars" and crooks rather than seeing them as (generally) well-meaning parts of an inadequate system.

As you know, there is no targeting process for "belly fat" specific. Some people will lose fat everywhere else first.
@DrAJ_LatinAmerica2 жыл бұрын
@JamieForReal, MLIS Keep in mind "belly fat" can be subcutaneous fat and visceral fat. In many studies, lots of women will lose fat in legs, breast or glute areas but they lose in the belly area. There is a certain genetic component to fat loss as well as many lifestyle factors, cortisol levels, is the person exercising or just dieting,..... lots of nuances. That said, the only thing that holds true, is no diet or exercise will specifically target the belly without affecting other areas of the body. Dr. Westman is a good guy, no need to resort to click bait tittles
@DrAJ_LatinAmerica2 жыл бұрын
@JamieForReal, MLIS As I said, Dr. Westman a good guy. Not really "his" program. It is a general keto philosophy that has been around a long time. Yes, works great for many people. I use Keto and Carnivore in my practice for many patients. For others I use other programs. All depends on the person's Age, race, goals, lifestyle,.......many options. Only suggesting the title should be more along the lines of "Weight loss in General".
@DrAJ_LatinAmerica2 жыл бұрын
@JamieForReal, MLIS YES, you hit the nail on the head with "contradictory advice". Absolutely because we are taking about humans who bring with them emotional, financial and other issues. Plus, there are cases like studies I have done with groups of people were they lost weight and improved all health markers on a cupcake diet. (not recommended but works). These types of studies confuse people if they do not have the control and will power to maintain strict compliance. Even did a bread, seed oil, sugar diet with same results, everyone lost weight and better health markers (sure, short term, again not recommending it). So the general public see these things and take out of context. Absolutely agree, lots of confusion, conflict and personalities. Content and context is critical. Great to have this conversation and add to the algorithm of this channel. This channel needs more attention and followers. There are Muck Bag eating channels with a 3M+ followers, craziness. Serious health channels difficult to get off the ground.

Everything Dr. Westman says is true. I have reversed my T2D with my A1c at 5.1 and fasting glucose in the 90's. Random blood glucose checks are below 120 and post-meal levels are usually between 120 and 130. At the same time, I lost about 25 kgs, went from 88 to 63.5, but here's the thing. I would be happier if I was around 67 kgs, but I'm not there. And I don't seem to be able to gain that extra 4 kgs. I have his book, and will have to read it again, especially the last phase, but the challenge is how to gain a few pounds without unbalancing your blood glucose. Oh, I'm off metformin for 3 months now, and I certainly don't want to have to go back.

Tri 104, HDL 63 & LDL 185 (Had been Tri 305, HDL 45 & LDL 167.) At intake one question was "Do you eat a healthy low fat diet?" I, of course, said no, there's no such thing. When the LDL talk came up, the provider stated "I'm here to educate you". How the $#@ can someone without the information educate me? I explained that LDL is protective of the immune system and against all-cause mortality - particularly in my age group and older. (*I think she pitied me and kept repeating that she was there to educate me.)

You could try fasting to get rid of the last fat. I regained a slight amount of belly fat even with extreme keto. It seems easy to eat excess energy with fats. Did a 2.5 day fast and got quick results. I will continue doing that for tune ups. Jason Fung is a good source of info.
