Add 3 Stops of Dynamic Range to Any Camera!

You can add three stops of dynamic range to any camera with this technique. 4k, 6k, 8k, and 12k won’t really improve your image that much, by increased dynamic range will! By using graduated ND filters, you can maintain detail in your Skys and your foreground subject. We used the new Fujifilm X-T4 for most of our test shots and some with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6k. I used the Buttery luts for all shots which were filmed in either F log or Film.

You can add whatever ND filters you want, you are not increasing dynamic range in the camera. You're reducing exposure and the dynamic range needed for the shot. I do agree though grad filters and many other Photo filters should be learnt and used more by film makers.

@@cineffect It depends on what the sensor is doing. BM has dual ISO and RED shifts dynamic range up or down. It moves DR up when you increase ISO and moves DR down you you decrease ISO. All cameras work differently.

Technically this is not adding dynamic range. It's reducing the contrast ratio, which is effectively lowering the overall exposure and thus the dynamic range of the scene to fit into the lower range your camera is capable of. A little misleading

Also with the bmpcc 4k you can use the iso to help allocate where those stops of dynamic range are going to be. A high iso in the first gain will give you more stops above middle grey and a low iso in either gain will give you more stops below middle grey

yeah they have a whole graph that shows you each iso setting, stops below and above middle grey. 800 seems to be the one that gives you the most stops above middle grey.

For landscapes a good helper, for sure. I still need my matte box and my variable ND filter. With RAW footage, I do all specific exposure in post, or light my talents till it fits to the background.

Yeah I agree, it's awesome for landscape shots and actually works well for wides where your subjects don't cross the horizon line of the ND grad. I'm still trying to find a matte box that will allow me to use variable ND filters and ND grads, cause yes they are a must have! If you have powerful enough lights, you can definitely match your subject brightness to the background, I just usually don't in bright outdoor situations.

is there an automated graduate filter with servos and gyroscope similar to OSS - lets say you set horizon and servo moves glass up/down to keep bright part covered? or LCD matrix - it can match any pattern no just top half of the frame.

Why use a grad ND and not CPL if your only wanting to reduce sky exposure??? Then you don’t have to worry about keeping a level horizon or objects crossing the horizon into the sky??

Wow! I totally agree that filters can extend dynamic range. In fact, I used to even put a clear plastic CD case over my super sharp/contrasty Nikkor lenses (on my first DSLR, a Nikon D70) to reduce the contrast, etc. because the D70 sensor COULD NOT handle contrast. (I was so bad without it that I couldn't use the camera outdoors, unless it was cloudy, and get a good dynamic range!) So, that may be another positive of using filters (in addition to graduated ND effects.)

I think using filters is still relevant today, cause I like to get closest to the look I want in camera and do the least amount of post production possible to my footage.

ND-grad and CIR-POL filters works well for reducing DR in specific shots. You see this on TV occasionally where the camera operator fail by pan or tilt too much / too hard, so the filter becomes obvious/distracting. But sure for great landscape shots etc it can look great.

Do you have any disadvantages when using the Rokinon lens on the XT-4 in terms of image quality? Because there is actually a "gap" between camera sensor and the lens itself. So wouldn't it be better without an adapter from a technical perspective? P.S: Please don't feel attacked in any kind, I am just wondering ^^

Nope. I have zero issues adapting my rokinon glass to the X-T4, sony, or any other mirrorless cameras. There is a larger gap between the lens and sensor, but the way that the line up still, the image covers the sensor completely and doesn't degrade the image quality at all. I've been adapting all different lenses and cameras for years. Only issues is if you need to rely on autofocus with other non manual lenses.

The a7siii and FX3 both have incredible 15+ stops of dynamic range. You can’t go wrong with either of them!!

The pocket 6k actually has more usable dr then the ursa g2, which is marked as 15 stops, and even in a traditional dr test the pocket actually has about 0.6 extra stops of usable dr compared to the xt3/xt4, and very suprisingly it has more highlight dr then the alexa, this was confirmed by both Juan Melara when he was making a p6k2alexa powergrade, and jsfilmz with his comparisons, and film jams with their comparisons as well, and the a6500 probably have only about 10 stops of usable dr due to the 8bit encoding.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of the DR tests on the Pocket 6k and it looks like it holds up against the classic Arri (jsfilmz did a great video yes!) That's interesting that people have found it to have a .6 stop better than the X-T4, I'll have to check out that test. From my use, I've found the 6k and the XT4 to be about equal in DR. Yeah, the a6500 definitely has much worse DR cause of 8 bit! haha

I would get a sony alpha camera, fuji xt3 or BMPCC if you're looking for my dynamic range. the canons always crush colors and dynamic range in camera.

You're right. And you're wrong, at the same time. There are a bunch of videos, that "Gear doesn't matter", 1-2 years ago there was a fashion to make a video with this kind of title. Gear does matter. Gear tells me, what I'm able to do. So here on, resolution is definitely an important deal. Same for you, maybe you just don't think about. I working now on a music video, where we had very limited time, to done the job, in some cases. Here I going to profit from the big resolution and RE-FRAME the shot in post. Time consuming and such a pain in the .... but still an option which helps me to save the clip. In this cases you DO CARE about the K and maybe a lot of people cannot see a difference on a 4K monitor between 4 and 6K, but I definitely find it out, which one is which. Do you need an 120 fps slow-mo? You got an BMPCC? Okay, so you must to go back for an 2,6 or 2,7K footage. And you says, K doesn't matter? Well, after upscale it to 4K in order to fit on the screen like your any other footage, you definitely loose details. 50 or 60 fps on max resolution is just not enough to make REAL slow mo, it's not slow to get amazed anyone. On other hands as good I know, human eye have 25 (!!!) steps of dynamic range and nowadays cameras mostly have around 13, your with 14 is already outstanding. The idea, make it more and your solution amazed me, especially the Summit you was recommend here, really woke up my interest. Probably I gonna buy the whole set! The video is 1,5 years old and I was directly by search at the moment, I didn't found it accidently: so a HUGE THX, that you made it. Man, I really feel better, pirce tags as many people I know. But the PolarPro isn't cheap at all, my eye rolled out like in a cartoon movie. (I know, that my english is not the best, there are grammatical problems, but I guess the message you got, whatever..)

Yea, graduated NDs are really cool and useful indeed, but there's a huge difference between ''camera'' dynamic range and ''scene'' dynamic range. Using a gradated ND, you're not adding dynamic range to the camera.. you're actually lowering the dynamic range of the scene. It's like setting up lights so a Canon T2i would show the same DR result as an Arri Alexa. It is impossible to add extra stops of DR to any camera.

Yeah, that's a great question. If you go back and watch some of the b-roll I actually shot with a subject in the frame with the ND grad on and it worked fine. It doesn't always though, sometimes it darkens the subject too much. But, sometimes you can balance the exposure right and it works. Also works well for wide shots with characters in the scene that aren't crossing the horizon.

Easier way is just to use masks in editing to isolate and adjust exposure for different areas of the frame. Use nd when outside of course.

the ND Grad allows you to maintain more detail in the the highlights of the sky, so it makes your image have more "DR" per say. Normal ND filters allow you to open up your aperture more but keep a good solid exposure.

I also found this confusing and misleading. If you were using a Blackmagic camera, you would have enough dynamic range to just shoot the scene, especially with raw. A grad filter can improve flat landscapes, but that doesn't help the cameras that do have problems with dynamic range: webcams, mobile phones, snap cameras, DSLRs.

Sony likes to beef up the specs on paper. They just play the best specs game. 13.7? Yeah right, more like barely 8. Sony’s way of adding dynamic range is just to reduce the contrast some more lol. I’ve tried working with slog and it’s garbage. All you can do to it is make it basically look slightly better than just using Sony’s cine or normal PP. I’ll stick with my bmpcc 4k. Sony I’ll use for stills and occasional video. Other than that they’re codec is just garbage to work with. It can produce some good images but then claiming 13.7 stops is just absolutely laughable. Bmd on claims 13 for the p4k and it blows the Sony out of the water

😑🤦🏾‍♂️As a professional photographer, you aren't adding any dynamic range man. The information captured is still baked on to the sensor limitation. This is like saying using a graduated filters on a dslr or smartphone will remove all limitations. If it were that simple nobody would pay more for better dynamic range cameras. You are just selling filters, which are useful...but actually reduce dynamic range in the darkened sections of the filter....as I'm sure you know. We use it to cut light...not extend dynamic range. This is the largest amount of legitimate misinformation I've seen in a very long time. How you have so many likes is beyond me. You're literally wrong.

Yeah no. It will not give you more DR. Not even close. That is just gradial filter. Looks fake also. For some landscape photos its fine but on video its a no go. Click bate, nothing more.

I don't care about dynamic range I what bit 12-14-16 bit otherwise the dynamic range is use less. You need to go back to school. Your explanation about dynamic range don't let you pass the first trimester on any school.
