I can't help thinking good old shellac might do the trick. It flows easily, fills well, makes a hard coat and dries very quickly. Thanks for sharing!

You know GeeDeeBird, that might work too. I am going to have to try it out. Thanks for watching.

This is great, thanks! I've used shellac before and that worked very well, but I'll also try the sanding sealer. Cheers!

Just the info I needed. I've been looking for something to seal my new cabinet doors which have an MDF panel. All the other products I read about had one issue or another. This one looks to be the best. Thanks!

When he started off painting smd it carried on I though..”oh no”. But when he finished spraying, I was like: “what? He’s finished already? I was just getting into the groove!” Goes to show. Thanks heaps for the heads up about the sanding filler.

If you painted this vertically would you have gotten runs with the sealer and paint?
@MadNerdWorkshop4 ай бұрын
You are more likely to get both with a vertical surface. In that case you would shoot lighter coats

Hello, I just purchased a computer desk online, and it's made of MDF boards. Yet these boards have a wood patterned wallpaper on top of it. Can I still use an Acrylic sealer to seal this?
@MadNerdWorkshop4 ай бұрын
I wouldn't use any sealer on top of paper wallpaper. You don't know what type of glue is use to affix it to the wood. The sealer could mess that up.

I used polycrylic on MDF before painting, which has the same look as the sanding sealer you're using. I wonder if what I'm doing is good enough.
@MadNerdWorkshop9 ай бұрын
I would think so, if it works for you than I would keep using that. The main thing is to seal the MDF and the polycrylic would do that same thing.

With all of your equipment, have you no compressor and spray gun?
@MadNerdWorkshop4 ай бұрын
I do have both, but sometimes it is easier to just use the spray can and not have all the clean up afterwards (I am kind-of lazy that way).

I have a question when spray painting something how do you deal with the after dust that's left from spray paint?
@MadNerdWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
I found that overspray is cause mainly by two things. First is spraying in the wind or in a really confined space where the overspray bounces back onto the work. The other is holding the spray can too far away so the paint has time to dry before hitting the work. This solves most of the problem. You will still get a little dust/overspray on the work and you can take that off by using a fine sanding pad like these (see link below). Hope that help and thanks for watching. 3M Between Coats Finishing Pads,1 Pack: amzn.to/3aZIk39 CANOPUS - 3M Scotch Brite Scuff Pads Very Fine/Ultra Fine: amzn.to/3uItGFE

I myself use polyurethane to seal mdf 2 coats, can be water based which aplied thin can dry fast and provide good seal, but it needs a bit of finess to avoid bubbles. Another way is rustoleum clear coat 2k matte transparent. all depends on the final product wether im working with water, oil or acid based finishes.
@MadNerdWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
I will have to try that Socrates. Thanks for the idea and Watching.

Welcome aboard John Reid II. Well if we separated at birth my mom may be upset at keeping me :-) Woodworking is a great hobby and not a bad way to make a living too. Enjoy.

So here's a question for you. So I been doing a bunch of mdf casing with routed edges. I been having the toughest time avoiding air bubbles in the varnish. I don't know if it's from the paint but being fully cured. I did also your kilz washed a week, did about 3 layers semi gloss paint. I'll sand about 400-600 between coats, tack cloth. And a few of them have the bubbles. So I was thinking (going to try it) spray the sanding sealer on the paint, 24 hours, sand with like a 400. Then varnish (spar urethane water based gloss). Any thoughts? Lastly I been working on a car type finish on these so on my test piece I was thinking about putting a .005 size glitter in the gun which in theory should spray. But likewise I'm thinking I do it in the coat of sealer. Any thoughts or anything you would do different? Love you channel. Thank you!
@MadNerdWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
You know Anish, you are way ahead of this than I am. But what you explain sounds like it should work and help get rid of the bubbles. Let me know how the process and the glitter goes. I am interested to see how your ideas on that work.

I would have brushed the edges (2 coats) and then sprayed the top (1 coat) of shellac (sanding sealer). A light sanding, remove the dust, then spray the color with 2 or 3 coats, lightly sanding between coats.
@MadNerdWorkshop3 жыл бұрын
That is a good Idea KSFWG, now I am going to have to try Shellac on the MDF next time. Thanks.

My great uncle was a finish carpenter beginning around 1920. I spent a lot of time with him when I was a kid. He made his own shellac and used it frequently in a variety of applications. He used ground shellac flakes and moon shine (grain alcohol) to make it. When I make my own shellac I use ground shellac flakes and grain alcohol from the liquor store. I think of Uncle Andy every time I make/use shellac. :)
