It's a smart solution, using the latest DisplayLink chips, but it's super strange you'd need this in the first place. I've used DisplayLink for years, but I wouldn't run any graphics-intensive work on it. It's more for productivity than anything. I'm surprised Apple has restricted the M1 Macs in this way considering they have full control over the SoC. Heck, I feel limited enough by nVIDIA and AMD's 4-monitor limit, but this is ridiculous.

DisplayLink devices do use resources from the computer's CPU but the amount of resources DisplayLink uses is dependent on many factors. Everything from the resolution of the display, how many you have connected, and even how much visual information is constantly changing all affect the amount of processing power that is needed from the CPU. For typical productivity software use, three 4K displays should work well but we do not recommend DisplayLink for any graphics intensive tasks such as gaming.

Great video. Will this work in clamshell mode?
@CruzControl.M3 жыл бұрын
@plugable I would also like to know this
@Plugable3 жыл бұрын
Clamshell mode (lid closed) is supported on Apple M1 laptops so long as the laptop is charging and you are using macOS Big Sur version 11.1 and later. Clamshell mode is not supported on Intel-based MacBooks. More details can be found here: support.displaylink.com/knowledgebase/articles/1963276-clamshell-and-rotation-support-on-macos-big-sur-11

Great video. It almost answers my question. I need to use propresenter 7 which casts to my projector which is the first display in my hdmi port. The second display I want to use is a monitor which mirrors my MacBook on a doc station through HDMI. Does this product support what I need ? Hope I explained myzeld
@Plugable Жыл бұрын
That is a good question and for the most part, I would say that this docking station should function for connecting the projector and the additional monitoring display. We don't have any experience with the type of software you mentioned as we primarily test these types of devices for general office use.

Hi, I have an M1 Mac Mini and cannot get my 3rd monitor to work? I am using 1-USB C port to power my 34" samsung QLED screen (no problem), my older monitor which uses DVI was only able to work by using the HDMI -DVI on the mac mini which works (ever USB C to DVI adapter I tried would not work). Now I have a USB -C to displayport on another monitor that i was sure would work with the second USB C port on the mac mini and it IS NOT WORKING? Any idea why this is? simply put, I can't get any monitor to work using the usb-c port unless it's an extremely new monitor it seems. Please help. I've tried everything to get a 3rd monitor to work via the usb-c port. Is there a difference between the 2 usb-c ports in the back?

Hay I have an iMac (24-inch, M1, 2021) and am trying to add 2 additional monitors. I am able to use 1 additional monitor but when I try to add the second monitor it won't allow it. Will this work on Desktop iMac?

Would this still work on older generation MacBooks? For example other MacBooks that don’t have the M1 chip??

Thank you for reaching out! These USB-C docking stations would match great with any USB-C Macbook, Intel, or M1, with no issues. Please feel free to reach out directly with any questions or concerns. Thanks!

Nice. I'm curious if this also will work with an iMac 2017 27inch to have 3 external monitors instead of 2.
@Plugable2 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for asking! Yes, this docking station is compatible with Apple's 27-inch iMac (2017), the docking station can support three external displays ( a fourth may be connected directly to the iMac ). This requires installing the DisplayLink Manager App for macOS, more details can be found on our product pages linked in the description of the video, and please feel free to email our support team at 'support@plugable.com' if you have any additional questions.

So I purchased the Plugable usb-c dual 4k DisplayPort adapter with gigabit ethernet, and when I try to use 2560x1440, the option only comes us a low resolution which degrades the quality. I don't see this option for 3840x2160 but then the letters are way too small on the screen. Why does it only give me an option for "low resolution"?
@Plugable3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for reaching out! Sometimes macOS doesn't list all the resolutions by default. In the Display settings, try pressing and holding the Option key while you click "Scaled." to see additional resolutions for the second display. If this doesn't help, please email support@plugable.com, and we'd be happy to help figure out what's going on!

I have never seen such a disorganized website! Trying to find a suitable product is almost impossible and most products have certain incompatibility issues. When I finally thought I had found something it was on a Japanese page.

NEED HELP: I have just purchased TWO LG 4K 60Hz monitor that uses Thunderbolt output. I’m trying to connect to MacBook Air M1. Obviously it only allows 1 monitor. Is there a precise workaround? The monitors are NOT HDMI. They’re both Thunderbolts. Thank you 🙏🏻
@Plugable2 жыл бұрын
We recently did a blog post on connecting such displays with the M1 Mac: plugable.com/blogs/news/things-to-know-about-thunderbolt-3-displays-and-the-m1-mac Unfortunately there is currently no way to connect more than one Thunderbolt/USB-C display, like the LG displays, to any of the standard M1 computers.

This is obviously awesome :0) can you make a dock that does 4K60 native + 2x 4K60 DisplayLink, and also provide full 20gbit/s USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 bandwidth, perhaps even some kind of way to combine the two TB3 buses to maximize the 80gbit/s bandwidth of the two ports through that dock? I'm just thinking out loud and wondering what some people might enjoy to use here :) I think it would be nice to "prove" that the DisplayLink overhead is actually quite low and perfectly supported natively on the M1 Macs, and to show basically that people shouldn't worry about the performance when using even 3 external displays with two of them DisplayLink, and that full 4K60 high quality video refresh rates are all supported, even with all HDR stuff maybe.
@Plugable3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for reaching out! Our UD-ULTC4K triple display docking station uses the DisplayLink DL-6950 series chip. This chip currently supports 2x 4K @ 60Hz. We hope to see additional 4K support in the future with Thunderbolt 4/USB4 docks.

I just got an iMac 24" desktop 2021, will this work for multiple monitors on this version? I've tried EVERYTHING so far and I can only figure out how to connect one external monitor for the desktop. It's been pretty easy to figure out the Macbook Pro but surprising it's so difficult with an actual desktop Mac. :(
@Plugable2 жыл бұрын
This should work for the iMac as well. You would need to use something like DisplayLink to add more displays to that Mac M1.

One more question I forgot to ask: let’s say I need to connect about 6 monitors that prompted me to purchase 2 plugable device, is there any limitation with that? Or my M1 would recognize all 6 distinct monitor via the DisplayManager. The reason for this question is that I had a plugable device working well but then I bought another product from pluggable(MacOS installView driver), only to discover that the latter prevented the former to work I.e only one of them is working. So I’m thinking if there is limitations or I need to purchase same products utilizing displayLink driver. (Apologies for long write)

Thank you for reaching back out! Our docking stations use DisplayLink technology. The maximum number of displays we support via DisplayLink on macOS is 4. With each additional display, more resources are required from the CPU and GPU of the computer, which can result in imperfect display performance depending on the graphics burden. The M1 system is capable of 4 DisplayLink-based monitors and one native. Please let me know if you have any questions about this.
