Yep Pat, saw it. And valid point on taking responsibility for the addiction. The thing is, addiction wasn’t the only one part of it. What did you take away from the fact that it is systematically dividing us? Besides addiction, it’s capability to amplify our division and many times radicalize it, is something society at large was not aware of and we should be. The antidote is that everyone should consciously expose ourselves to a varied diet of media perspectives to avoid echo chambers. Search things, don’t always go with the recommendation.

Break on through to the other side.... only problem is, as I've discovered, addiction is like being conditioned. Most will take this easier way out because thinking for yourself means being on the right side and doing it all yourself with those ON the other side judging you. A book is only addictive in the beauty of learning and evolving. That's why they're a threat.

I don’t think this applies here. The social dilemma is about neuroscience and psychology principles exploited on naive people (uninformed). The human being is not consistent enough to not fall into this traps. This is why the engineers who worked into this things are so alarmed, it just because it is a superficial principle about falling for addiction. There is a reason why non of them use the platforms. “THE OPPONENT SIMPLY DISTRACTS THEIR VICTIM BY GETTING THEM CONSUMED WITH THIER OWN CONSUMPTION”.

My concern is young kids who don’t have responsible parents. What about them? There is a legal age for drinking There is a legal age for smoking There is a legal age for driving There is no legal age for these apps even though they are like cocaine. There needs to be some type of education on this in school
@ParadigmReptiles

Why depend on GovCo to create arbitrary age requirements? The problem here is that you are moving responsibility off of the individual and parents onto the government.
@thejusunnivelan7193
@thejusunnivelan7193 3 жыл бұрын
Giving the government the responsibility of individuals is so dangerous (and a very commie idea). The worst part about what you're saying about kids with irresponsible parents is that these kids will follow their parents paths despite these government restrictions, because these parents are the access points for these kids. Driving is the only thing different in your set of legal ages because driving is/can be a risk factor between individuals, smoking and drinking is a risk factor for the individuals. Similarly, social media is a risk factor for the individual, they just use the connections between people to do so.

@HakatimeRugby 3 жыл бұрын
@@torstenbeck640 no. But thats what I took out of PBDs video here. Ill paraphrase what I heard him say. That social media companies are doing what they should, ie addicting people to their platform. Its a standard model used across all businesses and its individual responsibility (and parents) to limit their addiction. I dont agree with that premise. I believe the rate of addiction and the influence of media/ social media is one of the primary reasons for civil unrest. I am suggesting that PBD is wrong on this occassion because there may be a large social cost if the divide in opinions grows further apart. Simply saying social media platforms are doing what they should and its individual responsibility to manage their addictions is not enough to me. Hence, hes wrong.

@HakatimeRugby
@HakatimeRugby 3 жыл бұрын
@@torstenbeck640 I can agree with that. Individual responsibility should always be the first lens we apply. But I do think there is a real social risk here based on what we allow companies to do. These companies should be held to account on any bias in the material they promote and adhering to mandatory data privacy standards. Perhaps we should be encouraging more documentaries like this that help educate people towards the dangers of social media and the tactis these companies use. That supports the idea of individual responsibility. Great discussion. Thanks for engaging.

@wildtwindad While I agree with you, that is little more than an extension of the rich teaching their kids early on how to start a business or do whatever it is to be or remain rich from an early age. As an example, so you think Donald Trump or John Kennedy (or his relatives) started teaching their kids what it took to be successful when they turned 18? OF COURSE not!!!!

2:37 No. The purpose of a business is to solve their customer’s problems. Adding value to the end consumer. With great power comes great responsibility, thus business owners should do what’s best for their customers...not just milk them as their very own cash cows. Business should operate in a way where both parties are winning. Symbiotic.

I don't think it's a one-size fits all problem-solving game exclusively anymore. Every business is in 2020 is not necessarily about solving problems. Some businesses are about offering conveniences. People in today's world love convenience. So apps offer a convenience. There are many businesses that solve problems and likewise there are many that offer conveniences. It's important to make a clear distinction between the 2. I remember when the first generation of IPad was getting ready to come out and the critics were bashing it saying it doesn't solve a problem. Now you look up and see tablets everywhere. If Apple would've listened to those critics they would've stop creating IPADS (a convenience Device) after the first generation.

Looking forward to watching the documentary and see how they address these issues. Very good points you bring up, Pat. What I love is the challenge to look at things in a different way, not react with the masses. Masses react and do nothing to change the outcome, the bad habits, the scene. Active listeners and people who lead with a question, as you did in this video, engage their audience differently, engage their minds differently, and allow for solutions to be designed and implemented. What I find fascinating is the idea of a global market addicted to the game of "competition" and "getting ahead". We fall for those that compete in the marketplace for our attention and we give it to the winner. However, we fail to apply the same spirit into our lives and act accordingly.

I think the main difference of social media is that we're not talking about a type of "addiction" you would have with a brand of clothes or Apple or Audi.
