When the Destroyer is headed for Area 51 and Connie asks the Major about how safe they are, and points out there's all the people on the surface yet...the guy deserves a LOT of credit. He's been running a black-site operation for years, the kind of stuff that'll get you the death penalty for messing with it. And instead, as soon as she brings it up, his FIRST thought is that all those civilians have to get down into the facility, immediately. Even though technically everything in that base is still beyond top secret (irrelevant as that might be now), he puts the lives of those people before it. Respect.

With the exception of the defense secretary, there really aren't any "bad" characters in this film, and even he isn't actually evil, just kind of incompetent. Normally, you'd have a survivor try to steal Jasmine's truck and leave the others, or a fanatic who tries to stop the human plan because they sympathize with the aliens, but not in this movie.

@@lurkerrekrul Entirely true. But I'm reasonably sure in reality, if an (for whatever abhorrently stupid reason) alien invasion drove a ass-ton of civilians toward Area 51 in the 90's, they would've bombed the entire lot of them, and planned to blame it on some inexplicable natural disaster if they alien invasion fails. Successful black-ops types do not care about anything but the mission. The ones that do care, usually wind up dead. But even though his reaction was the least believable thing in the movie, I still appreciate that it was there.

@@RoxxSerm To be honest most of the acting is off but i'd attribute that to the writers and the director. Roland Emmerich may be the master of disaster as they call him but his movies are cheesy as hell and not particularly good. Even world class actors which this movie had can sound bad with the story and dialogue that they had to work with. In the hands of a Spielberg or Nolan this could have been a truly terrifying movie minus the bad jokes terrible characters and stupid romance between Will Smith and the stripper girlfriend. Still watchable but that's about it.

This was the time when they used CGI smartly. They made huge complex miniature of the White House and then they blew it up. Then they added some CGI parts to ENHANCE the scene. If this scene was made today it would be all CGI and would almost certainly look worse despite over a quarter century of technological development.

@@kimnice Exactly. CGI at that time was still pretty basic so they used it smartly. Kinda wish they could do that today and still use practical effects. Not to say practical effects didn't have their flaws. Look at Jaws 3 for example. But I get it. CGI today is cheaper and faster to create. The CGI today is great when used properly. It can either make a movie fantastic or terrible.

@@creaturecore13 Couldn't disagree more. A lot of the effects in this were practical, which not only tend to hold up much better, but forces the filmmaker to use them sparingly and with purpose. A lot of the time, CGI looks like crap even it's new, let alone a year or two old. It also lends itself to overuse, so every-other scene is some dizzying array of explosions & hyperfast hand-to-hand combat or some such.

Fresh because the fact that she's a stripper doesn't in any way define her character. She's introduced as a single parent (and it isn't clear they aren't a married couple until you realize she's not living on base with Hiller and/or that Dylan calls him Steve) concerned about her son and her pilot boyfriend. It's just her job - except for her interaction with her coworker and the conversation with the First Lady it could have been left out of the film entirely.

Originally, it was shot with Russell being denied by Major Mitchell because he was drinking, ultimately leading to him showing up with a missile strapped to his cropdusting plane for a suicide mission. Test audiences didn't like it, so scenes were shot for the "flight experience" interview in the hangar and Russell in the fighter cockpit set. Other scenes were edited accordingly to fit. It's why the one guy says "all missiles have been fired" but Russell is still there with a missile that would have been included in their count. The original version can be found on YT with director commentary, it was included as a deleted scene in the old Laserdisc release.

In the full version, the kid that was feeing sick was not an alien, rather he had a sub-plotnwhere he was receiving chemotherapy of some sort. The undertone was about how people would be affected when something like this happens and the supply chain(for meds in this case) was interrupted. The bulk of that got cut for the theatrical version toreduce run time. By the end of the speech, the theater was lit. The entire audience was standing and cheering. Will Smith declined to be in the second one. Looks like that was a smart move

The marketing for this movie was genius. The first thing the public got to see was a Super Bowl ad of the White House getting blown up... It was like instantly the most anticipated movie of 1996. I saw it at a midnight show on opening night with a group of friends. We all agreed that the movie made us feel good to be an Earthling! And that the movie, as flawed as the script is, was 2 hours of non stop entertainment. It has become an Independence Day tradition in my family to watch this movie every July 4th. The sequel is not worth watching except for the large scale destruction scenes... which are about 3 minutes of screen time. And SPOILER ALERT!!! it blatantly sets up another movie that will never be made.

I was 17 whenI saw this in theaters and I pretty much misses the whole movie because me and my girlfriend just made out in the back of the theater for over 2 1/2 hours! But I still told everybody it was a good movie!😁

In the novelization of this movie, there was a b-plot with the youngest of Russell's kids being sick with a condition that their mom died of. It was among several things that were ultimately cut from the story, even though they filmed it. Test audiences didn't like a number of things.

I lived in Chicago during the 90's. When ID" was released in 1996, there were some special cinema shows of ID" starting at Midnight, July 2-3, when this film starts in chronology. I went with some friends. We had a blast viewing ID" -a real thrill ride at the cinema. After, out for drinks. Kind of got a vibe this film would be huge! One big screw-up, was that Entertainment Weekly put an image of the Alien species on their front cover, published before this film premiered, so had seen that the day before on the shelf of shop, spoiled what the Aliens looked like.

The inspirational speech, by The President, is a riff on the pre-battle speech of King Henry V, in W.Shakespeare’s “Henry 5th” before the Battle of Agincourt, 1415. (We, Band of Brothers…etc)

I think what gets most people fired up about independence day is the speech by Bill Pullman toward the end. I would watch the second one. If not for your channel I would watch it outside the channel. It is not near as good as the first but rarely sequels are. Most people I have seen react to it or have talked to about it all have a, little, bias toward it because Will Smith is not in it. He had other films he was making at the time and they proceeded along without him instead of waiting. I did still find the second one entertaining and think they had set up a third movie which actually looked like it could be very good. But we will never see a third so that kind of stinks. Great reaction Addie.

Hey Addie. Great reaction as always. If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend *Mars Attacks* which came out the same year and has a very similar plot and structure. But it is Tim Burton, so it is funnier and weirder. I like it more. Cheers!

Fun reaction. Thanks! The realistic part: I can believe their ship would be impervious to nuclear weapons. To travel between the stars, one needs to move at an appreciable fraction of the speed of light and at those speeds, even dust particles come on like nuclear bombs. The unrealistic part: Computer viruses depend on an intimate and precise knowledge of the system to be infected. See you next time. Oh, yes, if you want scary, try "Alien" and its sequel "Aliens."

I have to at least listen to President Whitmore's speech every July 4th. The sequel was actually quite disappointing. There are some things they refer to in that movie's history after the events of this one that might have made for a much more interesting story.

Harry Connick Jr. who played "Jimmy" was in a couple very entertaining films. One was a WWII movie based on a true story called 'Memphis Belle' while the other he played a killer in was called 'Copy Cat' which is a psychological horror type of movie. His small part was brilliantly played by him though as he's peppered throughout the film. He was a real psychopath in it.
