That is a storage unit that is part of the car trunk. It is removable.

so by tapping into the sub wires before it goes into the amp for signal, your new subwoofer goes up and down with the volume of the car now? and not constant bass even at low volume

Actually your tapping into the Mercedes Benz amp after the signal has been amplified. If it was the other way around your after-market amp will not be able to pick the signal or the sound will be very low.

I’m thinking about using a JL Audio sealed sub as well for my S550 W222. The sealed sub will play tighter bass as well compared to a ported sub.

According to the maintenance manual, it is suppose to have a factory sub woofer in the trunk but I never saw that in my car.

You need to be corrected... JL 13.5" subwoofer you have in your car can handle up to 600 watts RMS at 2 ohms, NOT 800 watts RMS! 200 watts make a big difference.

@TJ Leland depending on your taste for music and different genres, the W222 comes comes with underperforming bass/subwoofers and the subs are in the front of the vehicle leaving an imbalanced sound. IMO the audio system is designed more for seniors listening to classical music. This might be an exaggeration but hopefully you understand my point. Some people might argue why drive a Benz just for transportation 😮. We all have our preferences, no?
