I was going to return three packets of beads to Amazon, as I was flummoxed as to how, using to crochet method, I’d add the beads to my knitted shawl. My crochet hook is too large, even though it’s tiny and I’m knitting in a thin mohair yarn. You dental floss solution was the first time I’d seen it, and it saved the project !

I'm so happy I could help! Yes, the crochet hooks needed for beading are insanely tiny! They aren't always easy to find, either. Happy knitting!

This was extremely helpful. While I’ve knit for over 30 years I’m very new to knitting with beads. LOVE the dental floss idea AND placing the bead “after” knitting the stitch! Knitting the stitch first and then placing the bead was distorting (elongating) my stitches. I have watched a beading class on Craftsy and your tutorial runs circles around it. Thank you for taking the time to explain this!!!

Glad I could help! The floss method is handy for when the holes in your beads are too small for a hook or if you can't find a hook small enough.

Great video! I appreciate the explanation re: the difference between placing the bead before vs. after knitting the stitch. It’s easier, of course, to just place it before knitting, so I talked myself into believing that it really didn’t matter and that designers were just overly fussy people. Now I understand! The points of the diamonds really wouldn’t have looked right had you placed the beads before knitting the stitches. I was hoping that using the Superfloss would streamline things, but I think I still prefer the first method with the crochet hook. Questions: What pattern are you using? And what yarn? Gorgeous work!

Thanks! The pattern is Girl's Best Friend, designed by me. It is written in two sizes--one and two carats. :) You can find it on Ravelry (www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/girls-best-friend-6) and LoveCrafts (www.lovecrafts.com/en-us/p/girls-best-friend-knitting-pattern-by-bronwyn-hahn). The yarn in this video is Quince & Co. Finch in the Fjord colorway (quinceandco.com/collections/yarns/products/finch-yarn-wool?variant=31910728728687).

Very nice learning class, thank you for the demo. The video shows how to place a bead on a knit stitch only. Is there a different process if your placing a bead on the wrong side with a purl stitch, which shows up as a knit stitch on the right side? I have a Moss Diamond pattern I am using, where the point of the diamond is made with a purl stitch on the wrong side.

I too dislike pre strung beads method because the bead does not stay in place until today I saw a Knit Picks video using the slip stitch method It was wonderful the bead stay perfectly in place .I believe it will chance your mind.
@peachy750196 жыл бұрын
The slip-stitch method is a good alternative if you don't have a small enough crochet hook, but you still have to make sure you have enough beads strung on your yarn and you still have to deal with the weight of the beads pulling on your yarn as you knit. IMO, using the crochet hook or dental floss method and placing the bead fully on the collar of the stitch is the easiest and best looking way to add beads to the kniting.

Hi, thanks for this. Can I ask what size of crochet hook you were using here? Struggling to sort out the best size for my 6/0 beads!
@BronwyntheBraveDesigns2 жыл бұрын
I used a Size 11 (1.10 mm) steel hook with 6/0 beads on fingering weight yarn. FYI, steel hooks get smaller as the US size number increases.

@BronwyntheBraveDesigns6 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry you don't understand the floss method. Is there a particular part of the demo I can clarify for you?
@karenbochinski6 жыл бұрын
When I do it the bead comes out through the floss end. I can't see how you put the floss in the bead. I only see one of the floss and the other end makes no sense.
@BronwyntheBraveDesigns6 жыл бұрын
Do you mean that the bead falls off the tail end of the floss? The normal floss end is looped through the stopper bead several times until it feels secure. Then you can load up the strand with beads, threading them on with the stiff end. The stiff end goes into the stitch knitwise and then back down through the top of the bead. Does this help?
@karenbochinski6 жыл бұрын
I will try again. I just got frustrated and gave up. I do love the crochet hook method. The beads lay really flat and tight into the knitting. I use 6.0mm beads. Beading takes a very long time and I have a deep appreciate for those knitters who put beads into their knitting
@BronwyntheBraveDesigns6 жыл бұрын
The floss method gives the same flat & tight results. It's just a matter of method for getting the bead onto the stitch. I like the floss method for its portability. You're right. It does add time, but it's so worth it. Choosing the right pattern can make a difference, too. Better luck with your next attempt!
