Look at an embroidery video, for beginners.Poke the needle through from the back. Poke it back through but leave a loop. Poke it through at the end of the loop and start a new loop.

Thank you! I knew about crocheting into a blanket stitch, but never liked the little 'legs' it leaves on the fabric. Never thought to use a sewing chain stitch, but it makes so much sense! I imagine the chain stitch attachment style might be a little bit sturdier too, given that the tighter spacing gives you more points of contact?

I am a sewer and theres nothing wrong with your tutorial -except that the selvedge should be cut off and not used as a convenient ready-bound edge.
