Join Karina and I as we take an off-grid family camping trip and attempt to add an insulating radiant barrier on the interior of our rec room/lodge with our kids and dog in tow! We are hoping to prevent condensation during the summer months keep moisture build up out of our little home away from home!
Here are links to the materials we used:
Insulation: amzn.to/3GhTsXw
Double-sided tape: amzn.to/3X6RArJ
Vapor Barrier Tape: amzn.to/3GeflXY
Liquid Nails Construction Adhesive: amzn.to/3VHhocQ

Hoping that's just a weekend get away...like camping. I live in north TN and just over the border in KY those square tube buildings folded up like lawchairs and umbrellas in high winds just around 80 mph. Those 3/8 screw holes pulled out. I don't mean to be a horrible commenter. But 14 states don't allow them as primary structure or consider them livable. Your family is great...have a safe spot if you were to witness extreme weather. Have a great weekend.

Thank you for input Wayne. We get some winds, but nothing quite as high as 80 mph. (According to the company) all or our structures are rated for 110 mph, but hopefully that is never fully tested. This property is our family weekend getaway for now. Hopefully more in the future. Thank you for watching! Have a great rest of your weekend!

@@off-gridonfriday562 how do the Installation do for noise when rain
@off-gridonfriday562
@off-gridonfriday562 2 жыл бұрын
@@henrythompson5624 It does dampen it some. Maybe about 50% noise reduction (rough estimate). It actually retained a decent amount of heat when we were using our propane heater for the kids. I noticed it most when I was on the scaffold. As I finished up the ceiling, I felt more and more trapped heat. It was kind of reassuring, and satisfying. Thanks for the question!

Thank you Jesus at the close was all I needed to hear to subscribe. 1) With the mass of videos showing stringing the whole roll over the top of the supports, wondering what made you want to go between them? 2) Did you notice a temp. variance as you progressed? After? 3) Is there any noticeable sound reduction from outside noise using that material?

Thank you @OnHoldAt50! All good things come from Him. We have been truly blessed to be able to go on this journey as a family. I’ll try to answer you questions in order: 1) we went between studs because we watched a video by PatriotDIY that explained that we only needed a small air gap. 2) There was an immediate temperature variance as we progressed in the install. As we sealed up the ceiling the heat up there quickly accumulated. Over the last year it’s been warmer inside when it’s cold out, and cooler in when it’s been hot out. 3) The sound has dampened decently. If it’s pouring rain the metal roof still makes noise, but the insulation has muffled quite a bit. Thank you for following 🙏

Interesting, informative video, as I have a couple of those type awnings without the front and back walls, used for vehicle storage. I have thought about enclosing and using a radiant barrier would be a good first step to repelling heat. I live near Houston, so our summer months can be quite hot. What part of the country are you all in? It looks like Southwest maybe. Keep up the improvements and stay safe.

Thank you floresmd1 for your comment and well wishes! Our property is in rural California with temperatures that get in the upper 90’s to low 100’s in the summertime, and can fall to the 20’s in the wintertime. We get snow, heavy rain and decent winds. We are hoping this radiant barrier lengthens the life span of our metal building.

Question....I seen that you glued the strips to the walls and how did you install the insulation to the strips... glue or staples or...Also what type of glue did you use to glue the wood to the metal ?Just had a metal building install and had the roof done was wondering about the walls, great video too..Thanks, Chuck
@off-gridonfriday562
@off-gridonfriday562 Жыл бұрын
Thank you Chuck! We used Gorilla Construction Adhesive to glue the wood to the siding, and we used a mixture of double sided tape (from wood strip to insulation) and vapor barrier tape (to adhere the insulation to the siding). The glue we used did fail in a few areas, but overall has held up.

@@off-gridonfriday562 so you used the construction adhesive to glue the wood to the metal walls and then which held better the double sided tape or the vapor barrier tape to hold the insulation to the wood?I had also thought about gluing the strips to the metal like you did and then using a staple gun to staple the insulation to the wood strips? what do you think , how would that do you think?..... Thanks, Chuck

If I am not wrong , those are 5 rib metal roof sheets ? Any particular reason behind that choice ?

I’m not exactly sure. We chose the model from a metal building company. When we originally ordered it we didn’t have plans to install the wood stove. Thank you for the question!

Did the two sided tape stay up on the ceiling. Has it came down at all?

The 2 sided tape is holding up well, but when we ran out we used construction adhesive for some areas. One of this small areas gave up. That might’ve been a bad application, though. Great question. Hope it helps!

It is cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. It works very well overall. With any new project you learn as you go, so there are some changes I’d have made, but overall it’s been a success. Thank you!

Could you install drywall over it?
@off-gridonfriday562
@off-gridonfriday562 Жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin! Yes we could. We’ve talked about adding drywall or bead board down the road to give it a warmer feel. We would just attach either to the metal studs and rafters.

Why didn’t you just use the metal clips that slide inside the ridges and holds the insulation on yr walls and ceiling before taping.

Hi Elwood. Thanks for the question/idea. Are you referring to metal clips used for pink panther insulation, or the carpenter clips we used for the walls? Either way, temporarily securing it before taping sounds like it would’ve helped. My quick answer is I didn’t think of it! Lol. Have a great day!

We did get this idea from @PatriotDIY. We love his videos. It held up pretty well this summer. It made a very notable difference with the heat. I’m glad we did it, but some spots where we glued wood to the siding using Gorilla Construction Adhesive failed and we have to make some repairs. All in all, though 99% of the project has held up. Thank you for your questions. Have a great day!
