Adding Leadscrew Covers to my Lathe

I wanted a simply way to protect the leadscrew on my lathe and started looking for sleeves that could be installed in that capacity. I found a couple options, put them to the test and ultimately installed the one I liked best

There should be leadscrew covers that have a slit all the way down the length (like a wire loom)) so they can be installed without taking the leadscrew off. Thanks for this video.

That would make the install easier but I think it would effect how it functions.

How do you like the lathe as just a lathe? I see people talk bad about these machines quite often, but I’ve already got a mill. I just need a lathe, and these fit the bill! They are relatively short for what they are, but they have a huge swing for a small machine. Most being 12-16 inches! I don’t have room for a giant clausing lathe, but my 7x14” lathe swing is way too small for most of the stuff I work on.

Some are way better than others. I had to put a ton of work into mine to get the lathe cutting well. BUT mine was also a knockoff had I gotten a smithy or grizzly it would have likely been better right out of the box. People like to rag on these machines but the biggest flaw is switching from mill to lathe and back again. If you're not using the mill then that is not a problem. Pleas let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

I have never understood why leadscrew covers aren't there from the factory.

Im sure it comes down to cost V retail value and adding them at the factory won't add much retail value. Its just one more way manufacturers cut costs to make a few more $.01
