Adding Nose Pads to a Plastic Frame

I always have these added to any of my plastic frames because I have little to no bridge on my nose so these help me a lot. My current optician is so nice, she even orders them for free for me, just for the cost of the frames, plus about a week wait.

Thank you as always for your helpful videos? Could you make a video with helpful tips on those more complex zyl adjustments? Such as when one side of the frame touches the cheek or frame sits crooked but "lowering on the lower" doesn't seem to fix the imbalance? Thank you!

I have a question I hope someone can answer. For years I’ve worn glasses with nose pads. I’m thinking of switching to the popular plastic frames with no nose pads. What do most people prefer? Glasses are expensive. I’m going to have to wear them a long time.

In theory a properly fit plastic frame should be more comfortable since it spreads the weight of the glasses over a larger area. The key is properly fit which is down to the optician and you to decide. Look for as much touch as possible. You should be just fine and you get a new look too! John

Laramy-K Optical, thank you sooo much for your reply! I order my glasses online, and my eye doctor’s office grudgingly helps me with the fit. I just can’t afford to pay $500 + for glasses. So far I’ve had good luck with the Rx being accurate. Be safe and thanks again!

I'm often recommending customers to use Silicone Stick-On (from GMS Optical) nose pads for their eyewear, especially when they are sensitive to tighter fitting adjustments but who also need them to fit tighter. Can Laramy-K create a video showing how to capture or find waves, warping, and lens aberrations?? Specifically during final inspection of the customers pair, before letting them know their pair is ready for pick up... Please let me know if you need any clarification on the question. Waves and warping are extremely uncommon. Capturing any image within the lensmeter is very difficult, capturing those would be nearly impossible. I'd put wave and warp in the same category and you would find them in much the same way: Customer complains of blur or something not right - you move the lens around in the lensmeter and notice clear-blur-clear area. Not something you might even pick up during routine inspection since we check the area around or at the OC. I might be wrong but I don't think you can "see" aberrations in the lensmeter. You might be able to see them on a lens map but not in a lensmeter. I might have some more on this a couple of months. Email me in July to remind me. John

Lukas, As I mentioned waves and warps are quite rare (especially these days) and virtually impossible to capture on video through a lensmeter. Note that waves and warping are not necessarily reasons to reject a job since they can occur outside the usable or optically significant areas of a lens. [ANSI even has a standard for it I believe] What does one look like in the lensmeter? To me they look very much the same. Lock the lens retaining device out of the way and slowly move the lens around. If you see a clear-blur-clear area that would be a wave or a warp. In my head I suppose that a warped lens might appear as a blur wave in the lensmeter. If you find an area like that and it is within the viewing area of the lens then I would return it. You CAN SEE them on a digital lens mapper which is a highly sophisticated lens program. Warps and waves tend to occur on very thin lenses when we are pushing the boundaries of things. You can get one from overheating (actually creating a warp) or through poor tool wear. A dull or broken diamond stylus can cause all kinds of problems. John

Another idea would be to figure out how to permanently attach silicone nose pads to the already existing plastic nose pads, without dremel. The adhesive silicone pads fall off too quickly.

Not really the same thing. Without guardarms you can't get the pad in the correct position to fit a flat bridge. I know there is already a kit out there for a more permanent "stick-on" style. John
