Good method. I've been working with glass for quite a while and this method will definitely work. It's probably not the preferred "Professional Fiberglass" repair method but it will get the job done and give lasting results. You hit the nail on the head with beveling the openings. Regardless of what method of repair you use, that first step is essential! Hat's off to anyone who demonstrates good how to videos!

You do a great job explaining what your doing, how you’re doing it, why you’re using each product and I just wanted to say thank you! Hey Mr. Johnny... Great video and just what I have been searching for. I have a quarter size hole in my fiber glass tub. Your process seems fitting for the problem I have. Other videos also have been helpful but addressed cracks and tiny holes. And yes I can do this.. Thanks. Anyway to share a video back with you..?
@westcoast_johnny
@westcoast_johnny 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ricky! ..Yes, a quarter sized hole can easily be fixed with Kitty Hair and a piece of melamine as a backer… which will easily “snap off” and not stick to the resin. You don’t need CSM (Chop Strand Matting) to fill the hole. You can buy “kitty Hair”or another brand of the same type stuff in a quart size can, with hardener. That’s all you need! And Thanks for stopping by!! ~ Westcoast Johnny 👍🏼

When you patched the air conditioner hole, did you do that from one side or both? I am covering the fridge vents on our 76 scamp and am wondering how to go through that process.
@westcoast_johnny
@westcoast_johnny 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Hungry Hippo, the fridge vent hole and the ac hole we’re both done one side only. I installed I piece of melamine with screws to hold it tight. (On the outside). Then the fiberglass was installed from inside the trailer. One hardened, you can remove the screws and it should pop off and not stick at all to the new fiberglass. It’s hard to get it perfect so you might have put a little body filler over the fiberglass and sand smooth. I’m planning a live KZbin fiberglass demo if you’d be interested, I’ll address you and your questions too. Thanks, W Johnny

Could I ask how you would recommend making a tunnel for my steering arm to pass through? I had to cut a hole in the fibreglass to allow the steering arm to enter but although not that important as it only goes into a well, I was wanting to make a fibreglass tunnel for it but there is lots of bends and shapes that would be required for the surface part before it enters into the tunnel.

@Knotts Fishing..great comment!! I watched your video and I would’ve used chop strand matting too, especially supporting a bow rail. I saw that the rivet holes around your windows were filled. You recommend doing this over reusing the same holes when you replace your windows? Do you also fill small holes with kitty hair? What are your thoughts on Bondo Glass?
@westcoast_johnny
@westcoast_johnny 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Courtney, I’ve not tried the Bondo Glass yet, but I’m going to try it and make a comparison. If it’s like Kitty Hair then it should work as well. I did fill in the rivet holes with Kitty Hair because when I removed the windows, I had to drill out the rivets, and then the hole was slightly bigger. Some rivets were stubborn and drilling them out was not too easy, resulting in the original rivet hole becoming enlarged. So in a week or two when the windows go back in I’ll make a video about that, and if it’s okay can I mention you and your question? Thank you! 👍🏼
@courtneyakin1
@courtneyakin1 2 жыл бұрын
@@westcoast_johnny That would be great! I’m just getting started on a ‘77. Wish I had the crank out jalousie windows that you have. Mine have one larger pane that is attached with a hurricane hinge at the top and pushes out at the bottom. When I remove the first one, I found that three of the four corner holes were drilled too close to the edge and weren’t surrounded by fiberglass. Grrr… I’ve never worked with FG but binged-watched ALL of your Scamp videos last night. They are super helpful. I, too, have to replace subfloor. Do you have any videos from when you cut out the previous floor? Also…is the rear floor and the floor under the kitchen counter all one piece? If not, did you glass them together? My shell is sitting on the actual trailer at the four places where the frame exits. Trying to figure out how to lift the shell off it slightly before glassing in the new floor….
@courtneyakin1
@courtneyakin1 2 жыл бұрын
@@westcoast_johnny I actually just read that Bondo HAIR would be a more comparable product to Kitty Hair. Bondo Hair is long strand and Bondo Glass is short strand.

I have smaller holes from screws. Is there a tube of filler that u can recommend?
@westcoast_johnny
@westcoast_johnny Жыл бұрын
Hi Logan, you can use a lightweight body filler for small screw holes. Once the surface is prepared you may need a piece of tape on the back side to hold filler. You can get a small pint size of lightweight body filler, beware of Bondo brand because it shrinks and will crack eventually.
@DavidStirm
@DavidStirm 2 жыл бұрын
What keeps it from just cracking around the shape of the hole later on?
@westcoast_johnny
@westcoast_johnny 2 жыл бұрын
Hello David, grinding the edges to a 45 degree angle on both sides, very clean surface, and the back (underside) is a little thicker. If you keep the hole under 1 1/2” or so it won’t crack. Using bondo type fillers by themselves will eventually crack over time, the Kitty Hair is super strong and won’t crack. Hope this helps. 👍🏼

Hello, without seeing it it’s hard to say. Is it an older one? I’ve never seen a door do that, they are very heavy and built sturdy. Can you email a pic? There was a fellow I read about in a Facebook Scamp group who bent a door back into shape by installing ratchet straps around the door, and he heated the door up and clicked the straps until he shape was right. Then he let if cool off and reinstalled it.
