The unfortunate thing about class action lawsuits is that they will have to pay out MILLIONS, but the consumer will likely get the price of 1 product. Especially since the purchase history has been erased. If u really had a bad reaction that resulted in hair loss-sue them yourself. It's $50 for small claims (under 3k or 5k depending on your county). The company most likely won't send a rep for that small amount and you will automatically win. I have done this myself for a furniture company and i won.
@shelbyb9965
@shelbyb9965 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah it really sucks that they probably won't get much, some of the payouts for these lawsuits are an absolute joke. However, there being an ongoing class action lawsuit doesn't prevent a person from suing individually instead, so it's still an option to do so if someone wants to go that route. While class action lawsuits aren't without their faults, I think the benefits are twofold: 1) The reality is that everyone who could sue, won't. The company is usually hit much harder through a class action lawsuit than if they only paid out to those that already have the means (time, money, knowledge) to take them to court, because realistically not many will. So yes, payouts for claimants are smaller than what they would get if they all sued individually, but significantly more people are getting payouts. This in turn means that the overall sum owed by the company is much larger, and therefore makes a bigger impact on the business. 2) This one is more applicable in cases where the claim is not a matter of small claims court, not necessarily a factor in this specific case. People who could not otherwise afford to take them to court (and potentially lose) are able to get at least some compensation. It's expensive to take midsize-large businesses to court, they have way more resources to dedicate to a legal team than the average individual. So a class action lawsuit allows more people to be represented who otherwise wouldn't be, and it does so without burdening claimants with the financial liability of losing a case. I agree that it's unfortunate the way they are structured, but I think they are good for hitting a shitty business where it hurts. They're usually your best chance for negatively impacting a business through both larger payouts and bad press, so I don't think they're entirely garbage. I hope everyone who files gets a decent payout, but more importantly, are able to heal physically and mentally and feel beautiful

I believe shampoo by Shea Moisture causes extreme dryness on FOUR C curl patterns (4C) and even worst on those who have eczema and causes the hair to become brittle & unruly. I've heard from a dermatologist on KZbin (Dr. Dray) that a reason this could be happening is because DevaCurl shampoo is sulfate-free, which makes it hard for heavy products to be removed from the hair shaft. So, their hair is basically covered in build-up, isn't getting any moisture, and is getting dry and breaking off as a result.
@SSNUTHIN

True, howerever i think that for that to cause permanemt severe damage you would have to use the NoPoo for a long time. The girl had damage after 2x using deva. Not cleansing certainly adds to the problem but build up alone does not work that fast imo.

You are right about formula changes when brands are sold to a group. I have never used Devacurl because I couldn’t buy it in France but I used to buy Shea Moisture’s JBCO Line and it made my hair look bomb. I have a flakey scalp and the shampoo was perfect for me : sulfate-free, clarifying and soothing, colour safe. Then Shea Moisture was bought by Unilever and the formulas changed (less moisturising ingredients and vegetable oils) and my hair got super dry. Now I’m using shampoos with sulfates again and I haven’t found the perfect replacement.

As you mentioned a lot of the people that use it are usually die hards following the curly girl method for years. The problem with their shampoo and shampoos like Wen is that it's a conditioning cream cleanser it does not contain sulfates or silicones which fully cleanse your hair so what happens is you get a ton of build up. If that build up isnt removed with clarifying shampoos once a month at least the buildup will not only cause hair to stop growing but also fall out and weigh down curls causing them to appear more loose or frizzy.. I've used it and didn't have issues personally but this is because I was using a clarifying shampoo once a month. Edit: I said purifying but mean clarifying lol I use an Apple cider shampoo once a month. It’s very drying so after I follow up with a shea butter mask no conditioner because we removed the oils so we don’t want them there again. I noticed that doing this has made my curls more bouncy and stronger and I have basically no fall out.

I agree, that is the conclusion I've come to as well. They had to have build up and just ignored it. And now their mad at the brand as if the brand soupposed to teach them how to care for their scalp. It's unfortunate but as a consumer you have to protect your own health too. These compaines do not care. I'm not minimizing deva curl's responsibility in this mess though. They make a lot of claims that are totally insubstantial like natural oils will ruin your hair and you should just big chop. (Their owner said this). Bit yet their products contain natural oils as conditioning agents. SMDH.

Black Dahlia definitely and the way they’ve handled the whole situation is unacceptable. Most companies will provide some sort of PR statement but they have yet to take accountability. You’re right it’s up to us to try our best to stay on top sadly. I was rooting for them too at the beginning but the lack of responsibility turns me off. I’m currently using Shea moisture it’s my happy medium. I used Maui moisture too until I noticed that my hands started flaking after use and my scalp got itchy using it which was prob due to the fragrance.

Silicones does not cleanse hair or scalp, rather it can be one of the ingredients that create buildup, however cleansing the hair with a sulfate free schampoo (with ex. Betaines) would help with buildup and they wouldn’t need to use sulfates

Hey girl hey single momma hairstylist from Mobile Al I just wanna say I think you are so adorable and I love how real you are. I have watched a video of yours when you said you don't talk about political stuff bc you don't know enough about it to share your opinion and I say that ALL THE TIME!! I have a client who has been with me for over 15 years who is on the city council here and I know she loves the fact that I know nothing about politics. She doesn't have to answer a bunch of questions and she gets to relax and enjoy her service. Anywho..just wanted to say I think you are great and hope you stay covid free☮️

I bought Deva Curl around summer 2018, and used it for about 5-7 mths, and my hair was so trash, my curl pattern changed drastically and the most of my breakage was in the front of my hair! I also found out that i have hyperthyroidism around the same time i just thought the damage was due to that! Now that more and more women are sharing their Deva Curl horror stories i think it may have been Deva Curl all along.

I bought a bottle of the 'One Condition Decadence' conditioner right before learning of the lawsuit lol. I'm still (tentatively) working my way through it for about two months now. My hair is color-treated but I haven't had any irritation or noticed an increase in breakage. From my own research the lawsuits seem to focus on the 'No Poo' line so I don't feel awful using it. Definitely won't repurchase for the risk, and also it's just not great.

I used to use the one conditioner as a leave in before I read about Deva Curl causing issues back in January. I didn’t have any extreme side effects, but after switching back to more natural products I have noticed much less shedding, my new growth seems to be growing in curlier, and my wash an go’s last longer (hair is not dry/ frizzy in a day). Not sure if it was the Deva Curl, but would not be surprised. Like you said it’s not an amazing enough product to risk your hair.

I don’t have coloured/dyed/bleached hair and I used DevaCurl in September-November 2019 because of hype. In that time my hair got destroyed. My hair (like in my picture) was silky smooth and now it’s breaking and incredibly damaged. I’ve tried a couple of hair masks and treatments but the only option I see is chopping it off because of how damaged it is. And that really sucks because you don’t really realize how attached you get to your hair 🥺

Jessica Kamengele I do not like shea moisture products! I don't exactly have 4c hair but my hair was verry dry after. It was very heavy on my hair. I find hair products that cater to women of color aren't very good at all...over priced and very heavy. I personally stick with suave cheap as it may be it works for me and I condition with a little coconut oil and jojoba on my scalp and my hair stays soft

I used to use it, but they definitely changed something. When I first used it (2011 maybe) my hair felt nicely, lightly cleansed after using their no poo. Then they updated the line, and I started to get sticky tangles, so I just stopped, and asked my hairdresser for a recommendation. It was good for me to let my curls be natural for the first time, but I wouldn't recommend it now. Also, super pricey!

I too have naturally curly hair. A few years ago , my stylist fixed my hair using Diva Curl. I was like you , I was just meh , I didn’t love nor hate it. I’ve never purchased it but didn’t have any major issues either. I will also say, I use WEN shampoo. I have for years and love it. It keeps my colored red hair last so much longer. There are many people who had an allergy to it and sued them also. I’ve never stopped buying it because it works for me.

I stopped using a while back when I went blonde. I was on a reddit curly hair group that recommended something else for bleached curly hair, and it worked better. I never had any problems, but last time I used was probably 2017.

Something I’ve noticed is most of the people having issues with devacurl have been using it for YEARS and rarely use another brand. I’ve always believed you should keep switching your hair routine up and using the same thing for too long will either be ineffective or have reverse effects

I'm currently losing 2-3 times the amount of hair I'm normally used to. I was using DevaCurl No Poo and Low Poo shampoo & conditioner, but there's so many variables currently going on, I don't know where it's coming from. I tend to lose A LOT of hair when I'm stressed, and I'm VERY stressed with the country's current situation, and being forced to stay home everyday. I'm stressed about work right now because my work feels since we're all working from home, there's no excuse or wiggle room for unsatisfactory work. I'm also thinking I could have some kind of PH imbalance or fungal infection on my scalp causing my hair loss, so I'm washing with coconut shampoo and rinsing with apple cider vinegar because they have anti-fungal properties. My general practitioner also said a lack of Vitamin D can cause hair loss so I upped my Vitamin D and Calcium. For me, I can't blame the shampoo when I was using the exact same bottles pre-quarantine and I was fine. I started losing my hair two weeks into quarantine and I've now been in quarantine for 2 months.

I wouldnt recommend no poo to anyone. It causes buildup on the scalp. Might be a factor for the hair loss.
