I honestly wasn’t even planning on addressing the recent “riding pants drama”…but I got enough questions from you guys that I figured I should speak my piece.
Agree with me, agree with YammieNoob, I really don’t care either way as long as you form your OWN opinion, and that opinion leads to you picking the proper riding gear for your needs, that you’ll actually wear consistently.
Personally, NBT is the only riding gear company I’ve found that makes protective gear that I ACTUALLY find myself wearing on every ride. Everything else has been so uncomfortable/cumbersome/ugly that it just spent most of its time on the shelf while I stayed in regular jeans and a t-shirt. And I’m willing to bet that NBT is putting riding gear on people who wouldn’t normally wear it, at a MUCH higher pace than most (or any) other riding gear companies out there, for that exact reason.
Even if you think NBT is only 85% as protective as the gear Yammie recommended (hypothetically), I’d rather be 85% protected 100% of the time, than 100% protected 15% of the time.
And I shouldn’t even have to say this, but no, NBT is not paying me to say any of this or post any of this. They don’t even know I’m posting it.

I’m not the biggest YN fan, but after low siding at less than 30mph and my NBT Aramids being the only PPE that failed I’ll avoid the brand. Especially after they reacted to their “guarantee” and deleted IG comments. I appreciate your response video and how well it’s done. I’d say the issue that should be and is being addressed is with YN himself, and how he handled the review. After my Rev’it and Alpine Stars gear holding up great for most of the slide and the NBTs shredding (at the knee aramid and armor section), I’ll never ride in NBTs again. At least not with any expectation of protection. I found a company in Canada called Ride Rich that makes really comfortable CE certified pants with CE-2 armor at the knees and hips. They’re pricier, but not Rev’it expensive and feel like they will actually protect if needed. Road rash is a pain, but especially on a knee - I don’t want to repeat that!

My first 2 years of riding I did 57k+ miles in all weather conditions from 12-107F degrees, rain or shine. Fwiw, if you're an Average Height American, I'd say go Rev'It instead of Alpinestars. Great quality, lower cost (you pay a fair amount for just the AStars logo/hype/branding), and more variety in colorways (last I checked anyways). If you're a Tall Height & Semi-wide American (6'5" with 40 inch waist for example), Klim Pants are my suggestion. I've worn both Klim and Rev'It, Rev'It I like for the: Price Tag, the Tornado 3 Jacket has more pocket spots than my Klim Induction Pro, and for coming with a inner-liner (removable) at the cost. I like Klim because: they have measurements listed for their sleeve length, and also an XL Klim fits my XL frame better than an XL Rev'It does (1 inch short on torso length, about half an inch on sleeve length) Anywho.. Alpinestars... they run small in the American market, I'd need to buy a 2XL Glove if I order their gloves, my cousin (6'4" and a 36 waist) I took to local motorcycle dealer to get him fitted with jacket and such.. the XL Alpinestars jacket we grabbed at a Honda dealership looked like he was trying to squeeze into a Medium Skinny Tee, we went across the street to a Euro Motorcycle dealership (I was showing him Honda bikes, but wanted to try to see if the Euro Bike shop had gloves from Held, a German company) and we saw they had Klim over there, he put on a XL Klim jacket, it was snug on him, but not unwearable. (I'm tall and wide hips, he's tall and less-wide hips but more stomach/chest than me for context, my build for stomach and chest is Average) TL;DR Triple Check the sizing chart, and use RevZilla if you haven't. Rev'It is a very decent brand for the cost/value ratio. Klim is great if you have a big American frame (tall and/or wide sense) but if the sleeve length is fine, and you can just size-up for torso length, Rev'It is what I'd go with.

I've only recently become interested in motorcycles, after getting a 50cc scooter last year, so I admittedly watch Yammie Noob. Not because I like him, but because I am just obsessed with watching videos about motorcycles all the time. I imagine his video brought a lot of eyes towards you in particular, but the way you break down the situation was very well thought out. The point about some gear's value/relevance is in simply being a gateway for those that wouldn't normally wear anything, is valid and an important point to make. Obviously, pointing out the false equivalencies and those sneaky affiliate links was a nice touch too. Keep up the good work.

I was curious as to what it takes to win one of his "giveaway" bikes. Technically, it is a giveaway motorcycle as it doesn't require buying anything to win; but to do so would require you handwrite a contest entry on a 3 by 5 card in order to get 250 entries while platinum tier would give you 10,000 entries. Functionally, it works as a paid lottery as, realistically, 250 entries would be heavily diluted; since there's no certification if a 3 by 5 card is received then who is to keep track if 3 by 5 entries get "lost". I wouldn't enter his sweepstakes (paid or free) because the odds are unknown and unknowable. It's just a wealth transfer from poor to rich.

For what it's worth, I low sided into a guard rail at about 25-30mph while wearing the NBT LTR pants. The pants never ripped, the hip protection (ngl, laughably thin pads) padded my hip and I walked away with minimal injury. Thing is I've low sided in regular Lucky jeans going 30~ and they held up. It really depends on how you land. Most of us will go arms first so our jacket will take most of the impact and abrasion. Also low siding you're likely still with your bike for the initial portion of the slide give your legs some leverage and likely the tip of your shoe getting the abrasion. In my case it was mostly my right shoulder and elbow and front of my shoe that got burned and eaten by the pavement. My jeans just had some dirt and light scuffing. I will admit even the NBT jeans, long as it's the aramid paneled version, are probably better than the majority of regular fashion jeans but even then not by much and are grossly over priced. You can get actual Aramid woven, not lined, jeans from brands like Noru for $70-80. Fully abrasion rated and armored jeans from Oxford or Dainese for under $200.

13:58 Hey Burch, this line about traditional riding gear not being cool and how it makes people look like a derogatory stereotype didn’t sit well with me - particularly given some of your other statements in the video about how you didn’t realize you had more influence than you thought, how that made you reconsider wearing some form of riding gear, how people should make their own decisions, etc. as well as your overall positive vibe in other videos. I get that wearing more traditional riding gear isn’t your personal preference - which is fine - but why bash folks who choose to wear it and make it seem like they’re somehow “less than” by wearing it? At the end of the day, we all have different risk tolerances and we choose different gear / activities as a result but we do it because we genuinely enjoy riding and the more folks who ride the safer things get for all of us.
@LifeOfBurch
@LifeOfBurch 6 ай бұрын
I think you misinterpreted what I said, or I maybe didn’t speak clearly. I wasn’t saying that’s how *I* view people who wear traditional gear, I was saying that from experience, the people in that age range or riding style don’t wear traditional gear because that’s how *they* perceive themselves, or fear *others* perceive them. For example, when I first started riding, I didn’t wear traditional gear cause I thought I didn’t “look cool” with it on, or I thought people would think I looked like a nerd. I’d rather “look cool” than be safe, especially at a time in life/age range where I still thought I was indestructible. Now that I’m older and can feel it in my bones when the rain is coming in because of all my previous injuries, I rock gear 😂 BUT lots of the people who are still in that age range/mentality, don’t rock gear at all because of how they perceive it. And I think NBT is helping to bridge that gap and help to make gear perceived as “cool” for the people who are still in that group. Hopefully that made sense!! Thanks for your perspective, and sorry for any confusion! 🤘🏻

Yami is right about those cheap knock off copy pants, which won't protect you at all. They are cheap copy cat crap, and you don't like it because the copy cat crap company sponsers you! That is pretty obvious. The are NOT CE RATED so you should not recommend them. Cotton and spandex has no abrasion resistance at all and is the same as wearing regular blue jeans.

He clearly doesn’t know much about fabrics because abrasion resistant fabrics weave aramid fibers into the denim itself or double/triple stitch an afraid layer under the outer heavy duty denim. The fact that he’s complaining about being called out for regular denim is concerning. His affiliation with the company should come with an apology and a disclaimer that later products will be certified but as of right now, they are not and do not perform as they advertise. Plenty of stuff is made in china, I agree, that doesn’t make them inherently bad, what makes them bad is not being built to standard. Just because it’s a new company doesn’t give them a pass to sell a product that doesn’t do what it says on the tin so to speak.

Just because something isn’t CE abrasion rated doesn’t mean it isn’t actually abrasion resistant, it just means it doesn’t have the official rating. For example, there’s plenty of helmets that are just DOT rated that may also pass the ECE rating, they just don’t have the actual rating because they didn’t opt to pay for the additional testing…if that makes sense. There’s a lot that goes into the actual rating. So their current pants have the aramid lining which is abrasion resistant and does waayyy more than regular denim, but not officially rated, and then they currently have an AA abrasion rated pant in the works, it’s just taking longer than expected with the whole process of the rating, getting the fit right with the stiffer materials needed, etc. Hopefully that makes sense. Definitely appreciate your perspective 🤘🏻

He kept repeating cotton and spandex because “denim” or cotton based clothing won’t hold up at all in a slide. He questioned if the pads were actually ce rated because they looked fake and really cheap. What it comes down to is if you want actual protection, you have to look for CE 1 or 2 and level A,AA or AAA rated. CE is for impact, the A’s are for abrasion. Either spend the money on legit CE rated gear or don’t waste your money getting clothes that look like motorcycle gear.

Point being, I agree with your criticism of "fashion" riding gear that isn't tested. But at no point would I say that the choice is "ride naked" or "ride in a full race suit" - that's fucking dumb, and you really oughta just pause for 5 secs, and think about how stupid that last sentence is on what's an otherwise reasonable point. For plenty of people, safety is not a concern, that's Burch's whole point - since we all pay for their hospital bills at the end of the day, if we can at least get them in jeans instead of shorts? It's a win. We can/should point out the deficiencies and false sense of safety that untested gear provides, it deserves to be called out. So one comment I have to make, there is a huge difference between actual traditional denim, and how most fabric used in jeans are now made. Cotton does not equal denim, and fabric weight matters a great deal, as does how the warp and weft threads are woven (individually and as fabric). Modern jeans are designed to wear out and fail quickly, the material (weight) is thin, they use things like spandex which serve to further weaken the structural integrity of the product (and these strands have to be woven to allow the cotton portion of the thread to stretch more). The result is that most modern denim pants short of something like selvedge have almost no abrasion resistance. I would avoid any motorcycling product with cotton & spandex (or even 100% cotton selvedge for that matter) as they are not designed for that kind of abrasion resistance. Pads also are only good as long as they stay in position during a crash/slide, assuming you actually are sliding on pads. P.S. I despise Yammynoob as well. Particularly after the whole Spite affair.

Not a Yammie sub. I also hit that unsub over the Spite getting fired video. But I watched that video first so it’s fresh in my memory. He suggested the original because of the Kevlar lining and stitching. Which I’d agree on that. Denim disintegrates as soon as it touches pavement at speed. So doesn’t have to be CE rated. Just have at least CE rated knee armor and Kevlar lining for when you’re sliding on your ass. That’s what I wear after my slide down the highway a little over a year ago. I just learn from my own pain from accidents I’ve had. So the most uncomfortable thing I wear is my boots, but again that’s because my Achilles was almost severed while wearing low cut riding boots. I could’ve just removed my passenger pegs because that’s what sliced my leg open. But I needed new boots anyway so I just went with a tall boot with good ankle protection for peace of mind. I understand why you wanted to rant. It’s basically a situation of take what’s valuable from his criticism and ignore the rest because he knows how to get engagement and clicks. Good or bad he’s been on this platform long enough that he uses it to his benefit. Ride safe but also have fun 🤘🏽

Exactly this. It offers much better protection than squidding, and is a lot less expensive than the quality stuff. As such it fills an important market gap. A lot of people in the US starting out riding bikes do so because it's a huge money saver compared to cars for commuting and small shopping trips, and they can't afford to immediately spend a few grand more on a full kit of high-quality riding gear. So they do some research and opt for an in-between that sets them back half or even a quarter of the high quality stuff. I'm completely okay with shelling out money for better testing clothes so I can have a better chance of walking away from a crash or surviving one. Once NBT starts making better products and have more R&D, nothing against them but that is a solid complaint to have and a reason I wouldn't buy from them just yet.

My grandfather used to say “the best knife is the knife you have in your pocket” basically the idea that he liked smaller folding knives because the big ones were bulky and he would often leave it at home instead of carrying it. Same idea with gear. If it isn’t comfortable or you think you look like a dork you’re less likely to wear it and it can’t really protect you from home.

LOL, I only watched YN's videos to see Spite. Once he was gone, so was I. As for the gear? I see reviews, then go watch MORE reviews, find written reviews, and find the flaws. THEN I make a decision. Just like one should, especially when it comes to PPE. Thanks for cluing those of us who don't watch YN in, just more reason not to go back. Ride safe, Burch! PS: I started out no gear, then gradually started wearing more gear... and after my accident in 2018 - I wear gear and at least long pants all year round. Finding comfy gear that has protection is the key. I still need to get some summer riding pants, but my head/hands/torso/arms are all covered, and most of the time I'm wearing m/c boots. Screw "cool", I'll take the protection.

The kicker for me is he was bitching about the NBT and WINX pants for not being CE abrasion rated but then admits that the Ugly Bros pants aren’t either so it was all literally a moot point.

Why did I just waste 40 mins combined on motorcycle pants?? They honestly all suck. The best ones I found were women’s pants lol. It’s also splitting hairs between road rash and death. Like the pants aren’t gonna make a difference when you crash most of the time, especially a bad crash. They’ll help in certain situations for sure but if the slide is the worst thing you have to worry about, consider yourself lucky

Regardless of what Yammie says, NBTis overpriced ($250 for jeans-come on, far more reputableand tested, certified at that price), and is made in china. Most affordable riding gear is made in China though, nothing new. NBT is a company with a goal to make money and market them well (still overpriced). Personally id go with Milwaukee Leather, Iron works, or Street & Steel at cheaper price with equal or better quality. To each their own. If NBT wanted to pay me to ensorse products, hell yeah i would. Would i spend my own money on NBT, hell no.

NBT follows Asian sizing so I'd check out Asian brands like RS Taichi, NOT the same as RST btw, or Scorpion if you found the NBT fit comfortable. Italian brands such as Dainese and Alpinestars will also be fairly comparable but usually run a little longer but comparatively slim!

Yammie may be a scumbag. You may not like him. That doesn't mean his opinion is invalid. Your argument basically boils down to: Yammie is a jerk. Don't listen to him. NBT's gear is not very protective but it's better than being naked. It's all well and good that they are getting better as they get older but you really cannot take that into consideration. The pants are what they are. Unless they are gonna replace everyone's old pants for new ones for free because they got better.

Interesting takeaway. I didn’t say not to listen to him, I actually pretty clearly said to listen to us both and make your own decision. I also said I agree with some of what he said. But at the end of the day, much of what he said was deceptive. No CE abrasion rating does not equal not protective at all. And ANY protection is better than NO protection. Especially when the NBT pants he reviewed are half the price of his recommendations that some new riders just plain can’t afford. Tesla doesn’t replace customers’ cars when new models come out, so not sure why you’d suggest a clothing company doing that.

@@AverageArdvark I get what you’re saying for sure, but I think it’s also important to understand the character of who you choose to listen to. If he showed how he truly didn’t care about his “best friend” and tried to profit off of firing him, why should his viewers think he truly cares about them and isn’t just trying to profit off them too? He doesn’t make any money off the brands he bashed, but he sure makes a lot of money off those affiliate links he pushed for what he recommended. I can see his underlying objective was just getting safe gear on his followers, but I think it could’ve been done without bashing an up and coming brand that’s putting more gear on people who wouldn’t typically wear it than any other brand out there. Also, I appreciate the respectful discourse we’re having here instead of just hateful bashing like the internet is so known for in these situations 😂

Yammie definitely participated in some skullduggery when it came to Spite. That aside, I find it hypocritical for Yammie to be talking about bike influencers selling shit gear. Up until recently his big way of making money was getting people to buy riding gear, (not all of which was safety rated,) from a storefront that he personally owned and operated in exchange for raffle entries to bike sweepstakes which he also operated. AFAIK now he exclusively sells Yammie branded merch and absolutely fleeces his viewers by offering paid memberships of up to $100/month in exchange for raffle entries and a discount for his store. Like come on; the dude reeks of social media influencer bullshit.
