I had a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy when I was maybe 7. Not gonna lie, the tonsil part was tough and painful from what I remember. Definitely had throat pain, but I recall not having nose pain at all, so the adenoid part was easy for me…that being said, a few years later, my new pediatrician in middle school said my adenoids were big. I told her I got them out. She said “well, it looks like they grew back.” As an adult, my ENT said my adenoids are huge. So either they said they took them out originally and didn’t, or the removal doesn’t have much pain, but they can grow back. And I have read that they can grow back

I had an adenoidectomy at about age 4 or 5, I’m 18 now. I had SEVERE chronic ear infections throughout childhood as well as strep and many other ear nose and throat problems, including not hearing well. So I had tubes in my eardrums twice- which worked, but I still needed the adenoids removed. I’m SO glad my parents decided to do that, because while I still get chronic ear infections, they aren’t nearly as often or as bad!

I love watching things that I have personally experienced done from a doctors pov. MOST of these facts are correct there is just one that I will have to kind of rephrase to make it more right. Not EVERYONE'S tubes will gradually push out and have the hole close all by itself. Most might but for some( like myself)will have to be removed via surgery. I had to have a 2nd surgery to have them be removed and patched over because when I was 5 years old I got them put in because I was hard of hearing. Then once I was in the 4th grade(10 years old) I had finally gotten them take out via surgery, and to this day I still have patch on my ear drum. No hate to this guy but I do want people to know just in case it happens to a child that you know. LOVE THIS GUYS VIDEOS SO MUCH!!!

I have had a lifelong of sinus problems, non-stop post nasal drip, and Eustachian Tube dysfunction for the last 8 years with very little Improvement. No ENT has suggested adenoid removal for me, but all these descriptions here resonate with what I experience. I have already tried all the allergy testing, medication, had septoplasty, and Eustachian Tube Balloon dilation. I discovered what I think is a swollen adenoid this year. It slowly grew over 5 months, and popped out a sizable calcified stone a few days ago. I definitely felt a difference on that side of ear pressure before and after the stone came out. I'm thinking of demanding my adenoids get taken out as the next step. I need to try something- always have ears I can't pop and irritated throat from post nasal drip, swallowing all day long. Very distracting condition all day every day.

absolutely love your videos. they are so helpful and full of great information. I do have a few questions. I do have gigantic adenoids and tonsils. After a cold or even after my ENT doctor scoped my nose I have difficulty hearing from my right ear, I think I have eustachian tube dysfunction? I have really bad allergies that dont fully respond to allergy tablets/singulair and nasal steroids. Is there any way to tell if adenoid and tonsil removal would be more helpful than allergy desensitization injections? recently I have started snoring also.
@GeneLiuMD
@GeneLiuMD 5 жыл бұрын
The ear can be clogged from adenoids, allergies, colds, sinus issues, muscle tension, TMJ, etc. The term "eustachian tube dysfunction" is a little bit like using the word "headache". Doesn't tell you want is causing it. The reality for your situation is that it is from a combination of issues. The only way to have an idea about how much each component contributes is the "art" of medicine. The ENT should have some idea which factor is a bigger deal.

Thanks for your video doctor. You explained it so well and I can't believe I almost can fully understand it in English! Also I have questions, here in China, there are many parents they didn't let their kids do the surgery, however, they tried many other traditional ways instead, like Chinese Medicine, Massages, food diet adjustment to improve the spleen and stomach function, and more exercises to improve immune system, etc, it seems there are a big number of them have succeeded and the size of the adenoid is getting smaller. I was wondering do doctors in America would ever let the patients try those methods as well and would you believe they could be effective?

Thank you Doctor, this video has been very educational and helpful. My 5 years old son had a sleep study done in April and was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. They recommended to remove the adenoids and tonsils. The day of the surgery we told the doctor he had improved 80% of all symptoms he had such as snoring and mouth breathing and we though that having the surgery was not needed at the time, especially for the tonsils. We cancelled the surgery and did a new sleep study. We are going to see the sleep doctor on Tuesday and see what the recommendations are this time. In our modest opinion, we believe he only needs removal of the adenoids because he wakes up two or three tImes at night due to breathing but he never had troubles with the tonsils.
@GeneLiuMD
@GeneLiuMD 5 жыл бұрын
It all depends on the severity of the problem, and how enlarged the tonsils and/or adenoids are. You are correct that some people only really need an adenoidectomy, but for others, adenoidectomy alone won't be enough.

I had the same exact experience with my son! Surgery was scheduled and suddenly his symptoms were like 90% gone so I canceled the surgery. 1st ENT suggested to remove the tonsils and adenoids. I didn't feel right about that because I felt it was more in his nose and he had never had problems with the tonsils. But I'm not a doctor so i sought out a second opinion with a different ENT. 2nd ENT said he did not need his tonsils out. He actually just his adenoids removed and nasal turbinate reduction. He's been sleeping so much better since day 1 after the surgery. Wish I had done it earlier. Recovery hasn't been too bad.

My son is 8 and just had his very large adenoids removed today. He's been a mouth breather for about 2 years and i just learned at the dentist that he will need to go to the dentist to have an expansion done? Bc his adult teeth don't have the space to come in and are just coming in wherever 😳. Very interesting how these two things work together. I would have got the adenoids addressed much sooner had I known it was affecting the shape of his mouth.

I'm curious ... for an adult that is getting surgery for sleep apnea ... one doc suggest the full UPPP removing both tonsils and adenoids, whereas the the second said that I don't need my adenoids done. Dr. Liu, how is this decision made. The second doc did do a DISE. I'm also considered a good client for Inspire ... but I have blockage in two places.

This is so crazy.. I have had this weird fullness, ringing and recurrent ear infections in both ears for over 6 months now. Originally in January when symptoms 1st started I had an MRI of the head without contrast and a CT Scan of head again no contrast. Nothing showed and I was given nasal steroids which did not do anything for the symptoms. Fast forward to July and 3 bouts of ear infections later as well as continued fullness and ringing but add a new symptom of sinus pain and pressure in forehead and nose, bridge of nose and cheeks but without mucus or congestion. Most pain and pressure in forehead and one eye. Get another CT scan of head without contrast and sinuses showed inflammation. Was prescribed prednisole pack which helped a little but only at first, quickly had a rebound of symptoms that Prednisone no longer does anything for the sinus and facial pain or the eye pressure. Do you think it could be adenoids? I am 41 so certainly not an age that would be common but it's been 7 months and still no answers. Could the CT scan have missed something? Any advice or explanation would be super helpful and appreciated. If not adenoids than what could it possibly be?? Amazing and informative video by the way. Edit: Also I was recently approved for placement of ear tubes in both ears and that is scheduled for next week. I was excited but now that I have the sinus pain and inflammation for weeks now that is not going away or responding to treatment I wonder if ear tubes would even be beneficial. Again any advice or information that may help would be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU!!

@@80sfreak42 Damn, I am sorry to hear that. Yeah mine never went away or hasn't so far. The tubes they put in helped with the recurring ear infections but made the ringing so much worse. It's like constantly hearing crickets at dusk but there aren't any. The quieter a place I am in the more noticeable it is so I guess that it is permanent. Yeah it's crazy because you just assume that it will go away but then it just never does. I hope I can eventually get used to it maybe?

@@divinelove1273 they never found an actual "problem" or specifically whatever primary issue that had caused the ears to start acting this way. They did a full head and brain M.R.I.with contrast and the oy this gvtgat showed was a deviated septum and fluid in both ears. They did put in tympanic ear tubes in both ears to regulate pressure and drain any fluid and that did help a lot. I no longer get ear infections, muffled hearing or ringing. I occasionally have the whooshing sounds as before but not nearly as bad or as often because that was actulthe absolute worse. It is now 95% better and only happens occasionally and not as intensely as before. No more infections either. It's been about 4 years and things are better. It really depends on what the symptoms are and what issues she is having. Sometimes it makes sense to take out the tonsils along with the adenoids. Other times, it makes sense just to take out the adenoids. From the x ray findings, it certainly sounds like there may be good reason to strongly consider at least the adenoidectomy.

@@painkillerO8 Not too bad. I was mentally prepared for the worst. The first 2 days were not bad. He complained of a sore throat the first day and also threw up once. I think he was nauseous from the anesthesia. He was able to eat normally. Then day 3-5 he actually had a low grade fever and was not feeling good. I also noticed a change in his voice. It was really high pitched and sounded like he was pinching his nose closed. His breath began to smell really bad from the open wounds I guess. Thats starting to go away today. And also his voice seems back to normal. Its day 6 and hes feeling almost back to normal. He also had to have nasal turbinate reduction so his nose would bleed occasionally. But since day 1 his sleeping has drastically changed. He can breath so much better! Still has his mouth when he sleeps but he's so quiet now! He's still healing so I can't wait to see how much more he improves. He was so loud and snored like a grown man. Tossed and turned all night. Woke up sometimes 5 times a night. @@painkillerO8 your welcome. We tried a steroid and a nasal spray before doing the surgery and it did absolutely nothing. I understand. It is scary. Definitely get a second opinion if you are not sure. I did. 1st ENT wanted tonsils and adenoids out. He'd never had problems with his tonsils so I didn't want to remove those. I saw the 2nd ENT and he said the tonsils did not need to be removed. But he did have to have his nasal turbinates reduced. That made me feel better. So he had those two things done and it really wasn't too bad. He's had colds that were worse than this recovery. I say do it. Your child will feel SO much better after. Sounds like his adenoids are pretty big like my son's. Just a few days of discomfort and then a lifetime of feeling better.

I can't provide specific medical advice over the comments section of the forum. Sleep Apnea occurs because the upper airway (from the tip of the nose to the voice box) is narrowed or obstructed. Anything in the upper airway contributes. For some people, it is mostly from one cause (tonsils or adenoids or septum, etc...). But it is always due to a combination of everything. So if the tonsils and adenoids are both large, they are likely both contributing. Removing either one will help. Removing both will clear even more room. The question that I cannot answer is whether or not you need both removed or not. Only someone that has actually evaluated your child can give a specific answer for your case.

Thank you for your explaination. This was very well put. My 3.5 yr old is getting evaluated for ear tubes and they suggested removal of adenoids as well. They stated its better to get it all done in one shot. I know he needs the ear tubes, but whats the harm if you do one now and another later on? My thought process is almost a wait and see approach vs just jumping in and doing it based on a suggestion vs a true evaluation.

@@sometimesitjustclick Idk how far you want to get into it. We got 2 evaluations for doctors, they both said remove adenoids and put in tubes. One also said tonsoils, which we didnt do. As this was 8 months ago now, we went with the surgery to add tubes and remove adenoids. 1. They dont prep you for how your child will be coming out of surgery, its awful when they come from anesthesia. 2. Recovery was simple and he was back to normal in 36-48hours. Surgery was like 15 mins and we prepped alot before hand. 3. He hasnt had an ear infection since, but is still sensitive to loud noises even today. Now would I recommend it afterwards? It depends. Personally, If it was today and what I have learned since, I wouldnt. Learning about inflammation and how it affects his body and his diet is a major factor. However, it did resolve the short term problem. So I guess Ill say do what you feel is best based on the knowledge you have at the time. If you want to dig deeper and are prepared to go down rabit holes for alternative solutions, then im all for that as well. Its your decision to decide for them. Learning that my wife had all that done as a kid in the 90s, and is always sick every month, Connecting those dots I wouldnt have done it. Best of luck to you.
