Nice tip about disconnecting the battery. I had a shop set my 95 dakota on fire one time. The tech pulled the rail to check fuel pressure and it found an ignition source. They tried to blame it on me then came back after lunch with a better plan. They fixed what had burned but i took it elsewhere for a fuel pump. edit to add quote: "it was broken when you brought it in here" "IT WASN'T ON FIRE!" This was a large reputable shop in my area BTW

Very common on rental water trucks. The contractor has them for so long, that the renters' mechanic changes fuel the filter. They aren't used to common rail, so they "prefill" the filter from a bucket. The contaminants cause the injectors to fail. You can tell from the data screen on the diagnostic program - the fuel system is delivering 105% during cranking, but no start, and very little smoke. The injectors are delivering fuel, but not atomizing it. Unlike a gas engine (whose fuel is aromatic), a diesel will not start with just liquid fuel in the cylinders - it must be atomized. At $1,200 per injector, it's an expensive lesson.
@shanerorko80762 жыл бұрын

High adapt I've really been enjoying your videos, you probably already know this, forgive me if you do, I was getting so sick and tired of the computer shutting down when I wanted to check for pressure during crank. I finally figured out it had to do with minimum threshold voltage in the battery dropping below the minimum threshold voltage. What I started doing when I needed to check fuel pressure while cranking was put a jumper box on the batteries. That took care of everything. The problem isn't unique to Caterpillar, happens as well with Cummins Insight, and International Service Maxx.

9:40 I'm an Aussie motor mechanic who transfered to heavy equipment years ago to work underground. That little R1300 loader was the baby in a range of machines originally produced by Elphinstone Engineering in Tasmania Australia. The company used CAT mechanicals and made their own frames and implements. They got so good at it that eventually CAT came knocking with a cheque to buy them out. Unfortunately, the old tech CAT engines is what has held them back in the market, as companies like SANDVIK and EPIROC use modern Euro spec engines to reduce pollution of the underground air systems. The mining company I work for (the largest underground contractor in Australia) used to use CAT loaders exclusively. We now run the more powerful and cleaner SANDVIK machines.

I worked on one of those once that decided to magic out it's orifice tube. Came in with an A/C problem, a couple techs messed with it before it got to me. Pressures were all weird, but the compressor was cycling, just no cold air out of the vents. No leaks, everything seemed normal until I eventually gave up and started taking components off to inspect individually. Disconnected the line coming from the cab to the condenser and where the parts manual called for an orifice tube, there was nothing. There's a 90-degree bend in the hardline downstream like 3 inches from that connection point. Never figured out what happened to it but put a new tube it and had cold as ice out of the vent.

Great channel and content. Thank you for sharing. I like how we all can learn from each other’s experiences. I’m sure it may have been stated already. But the quill tube not being at the proper torque can cause a severe high pressure fuel leak. Quite common on the 5.9 Cummins common rail.
@AdeptApe2 жыл бұрын
The Cummins troubleshooting is definitely more detailed as far as the high pressure system goes. Cat spends a lot of time on the low pressure side first. I can also say that the Quill tube nuts were not loose.
@lucas-changingtheindustrypcast Жыл бұрын
30 hours from a previous tech....to find a high return issue? Yikes! And we wonder why consumers question our profession.... While I agree, replacing all is best practice, its worth noting that in the aftermarket independent shops, it's common practice just to block an injector at a time and monitoring rail pressure. In fact, that's the documented test procedure on most common rail engines. This would also allow us to go from a broad return test to an individual injector return test. It would take more time but add further data to the conclusion. I'd say at 30 hours, the client would want a book 🤣🤣🤣

We end up messing around with that return flow test on 03 and newer common rail Cummins too. But there’s a tool to hook up off the return manifold, so part way back on the engine instead of back of the head. Lot of guys don’t want to do that though. Just go off codes or do cylinder contribution tests. Sometimes redoing the torque procedure for the high pressure connectors/ injectors will fix the issue if something come loose. Fortunately for us, no trim codes until the 6.7.

That underground loader (called a LHD for load-haul-dump, scoop-tram or simply a scoop) is a tiny thing compared to the 11+ yard production ones. The driver sits sideways because you are going in reverse as often as forward and the visibility is better on the end that doesn't have the giant bucket on it, by sitting sideways you can see the entire machine by only turning your head 90deg each way. Underground equipment are very different animals than the surface dwellers use. Squashed graders, 50ton haul trucks with ejector boxes and more pieces of specialized equipment than you can shake a stick at (Simbas and Jumbos and Bolters, oh my!) and it all gets dropped down that little hole in pieces.

Many large marine Diesel engines, like the 16/24, 21/31, 27/38, and 32/40 from MAN Diesel, and the Wärtsilä 20, 25, 32, and 46, also have mechanical injection pumps with hydraulic (they're actually electro-hydraulic) governors, and they can run on crude oil. Been seeing all 18 of our cats(engine milage between 250k to 1 million) with fuel in the oil with oil analysis. Most between 3% to 5%. Had two with 14% to 16% and found the upper o ring on one of the injectors was split. Changed all 6 because you're in there already.. Bit of a pain laying on your stomach in the floor hatch of a MCI bus : ) But at least you don't have to mess with any fuel lines like on that common rail. The one I did the other week was an original engine, not rebuilt with little over one million miles on it! Just sucks you have to do ARD heads roughly once a year for about $1600 in parts for the whole kit.. head, sensors, spark plug, ext ext. Maybe on a truck the ARD's last longer?
