I'm a much better operator than mechanic, but in the course of my time around machinery/trucks I've learned that corroded terminals, contacts and compromised wiring is one of the first things I look for when diagnosing starting or ignition difficulties. Seen a lot of guys replace batteries when it was actually just corroded terminals on the lead wires and batteries. Next up are clogged filters dropping fuel pressure to the pump and injectors. Fuel filters get neglected a lot because of people being a little leery of the process of purging air after the filter is changed.

I'm working on a 1981 Perkins 4.108 , on a sailboat. I noticed the fuel injector pump timing was not straight onto it's MARK, but advanced. This engine has extremely low compression(230-250) is this something a mechanic will do "advance the timing" to help out a low compression engine?... Service manual indicates the timing mark should align to the two marks for a new engine.
@TheMakadimic5 жыл бұрын
I think it's trick to make engine starting easily , by advance fuel timing to aid burning fuel .but it will affect on your exhaust valves since firing happen as exhaust valve little bit open , you will notice higher exhaust temperature .

What would you consider be the issue on a diesel engine that starts cold in 1-2 cranks, but needs 20+ cranks when warm?
@HTMLRu1ezD00d Жыл бұрын
I know this is an old comment, but this may be some knowledge to a future reader. Cold air is more condensed than warmer air, this means more air particles can be crammed together in a given area. This is due to them moving slower and taking up less room. This means in cold environments you are having excess air in the cylinder when the atomized diesel goes to detonate. The air to fuel ratio is different with having more air than normal compared to warm temperatures. So if you are having no issues in the cold, but having issues in warmer conditions I would start with a bigger air intake, and see if that allows for better mixture. I could expand further but I’m not trying to write 10 page essay, that no one may read. TLDR, it is starving for air.
@charlesdarlintonafare2166 Жыл бұрын
You did not talk about heater plugs related to hard starting especially in cold condition. Is it that it does not have a relationship with hard starting in the mornings?
@billykriaris3096 Жыл бұрын
Your engine should start if it has good compression. Even without glow plugs
@jaredmayer39605 жыл бұрын
You need good atomization of the fuel when injected. If the compression is good it will light. If you have mechanical injection it’s not as fine and tougher to light. I’m from Canada...get a webasto...no more problems and you can heat the tranny and fuel...boom lights at -30 in the wind like summer time...

Hi, I just watched you video. I’m not a mechanic but I can stumble through a let of repairs. Being retired and extremely limited on money I’m trying to deal with my van not starting. It’s a chevy year 2000 diesel duramax express 3500 van. It’s been hard starting and when it starts I get a few seconds of blue smoke out of exhaust and then drives fine. I continues to start fine. But after I park for a few days it becomes hard to start again. Yesterday it would crank and almost start and I would get blue smoke out the exhaust but never start. And the cranking is a bit slow and if it doesn’t start in a few seconds the cranking get very slow. I have put a freshly charged large jumper box on it but still the same. Two days now and I haven’t got it started. I don’t have the money to take it to a shop. Any pointers that I should do? I want to check the grounding straps. But I have to find them. I remember seeing one in the past and it looked very green and deteriorated. I’ll try a jumper cable from battery to engine block. Anything else with my limited skills can do?

I have a question for you. When you use ether to start a diesel over and over ive heard it becomes dependent on it as in it wont or is very hard to start without ether. What causes this.
@mt18855 жыл бұрын
This would most likely be a fuel delivery issue as it is cranking over but just air.
@jbowen18315 жыл бұрын
From what I've read its from excessive ether use that washes the cylinder walls and rings causing lower compression over time which results in having to use more ether.
@Uncle-Duncan-Shack5 жыл бұрын
The force generated by the ignition from using ether is so high that it actually compresses the connecting rods and shortens them which leads to the pistons stopping further down the pot at tdc and resultant loss of compression. Ether can cause broken rods as well. The rings and grooves get damaged which does not help. It's a slippery slope to an expensive engine rebuild or replacement.
@cwj92025 жыл бұрын
If adding ether to the air flow is necessary to start an engine, the continual use of ether is an issue which appears only as a very small blip on the radar screen. Josh provided many examples of no starting incidents, i.e. bad batteries, bad battery cables, sucking air, etc., and their troubleshooting procedures to repair the no-start issue.

Really good video, I learnt a lot, thanks.. I have a fiat ducato van, 2.3L 120 multijet... with a hard start... It cranks for about 5 seconds, then struggles into life, with a ploom of white smoke when it starts, and runs rough for about 5 seconds, I normal blimp the throttle, then its perfectly fine.... from the sound of your video this is a cold misfire... most like injector? is there anything else I should check? I have checked battery, cleaned and tighten the battery cables (positive was loose, made it better but still issue). injector leak off test done which was fine, changed the pressure regulator as I thought it should hold pressure in the rail when off as I was told this has a check valve (your video says its doesn't hold pressure). I checked FPR sensor on my OBD, starts around 5000PSI, idles 6300PSI, goes up when I press the throttle as expected. when I shut off it drops to 58PSI in about 10 seconds, if I then check it 2 days later then its still sat at 58psi never goes down below that, but sometimes I've watched it with nothing running, and the 58psi will change to 26psi for just a second then go straight back to 58psi, so it seems to work, but also maybe seems dodgy.... is it also worth checking compression or timing as a few people have suggested?... Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated thanks :)

My Dodge/cummins has been acting strange lately today it was almost 30 out and wouldn't start I'm like ok wtf. Checked the wires to grid heater and the battery connection is shot. Tried to use too small of wire to splice and it instantly started smoking!

If i manually prime my toyota corolla d4d 2003 then it starts much better in the cold, in the mornings. Does this suggest a fuel pump or fuel tank/line pressure loss overnight ? thanks ?

Hi Ape just discover this channel,really helpful info Thanks. What about hard starting engine when in working temperature? I have mondeo mk5 2.0l diesel TDCi ,this is Ford fusion in USA .I live in UK and the weather is between 0 and 25 celsius over the year.I have an issue when engine is hot. If I stop the engine and try to start it straight after is turning much more than usually need to start,but I use a start stop and the engine shut and start on a traffic light for example I dont havy any issues.just a note Camshaft position sensor is new and is genuine from main dealer. So if you give me any guide will be much appreciated.
