I really hope that the next balance update works on improving the internal balance of the custodes. It's silly that a list of basically only guard and their leaders is not just viable, but optimal.

i think its just that anything aside from guard and allarus is hilariously over-costed. theres no reason sagitarum should be a locked 250pts, or venatari being 230ish. hopefully some revisions on that. as a custodes player i'd love to run some more unique units, but i mostly play at 1kpts and when most units cost a quarter of my points value, its just not fun.

​@HiggsyAndGinge but with the army being so elite, you'll struggle to have variety. You have to pick a niche and choose models accordingly. If you want an "all-rounder list that can do most things" then it'll simply be blocks of guards The other units, expensive as they are, fill particular roles (like Allarus hunting characters or monsters, I forget) but it has to be to the exclusion of doing other things. That's what an elite army is And that's the price you pay for having each model being the equivalent to a squad in most other armies

@@Ben-sn9cw it doesn’t have many wounds, it can quite easily be focused by a few units It’s move is very slow for what we want Notable things that can easily take it out include gladiator lancers, repulsor executioners, knight valiant, knight castellan, knight crusader, a hellblaster squad of 10 with sustained hits, desolation squads, Lenin russ demolishers, eldar fire prisms as there’s always 3 and if one can shoot it they all can, eradicator squad should melt it fairly easily I’d expect a couple of d cannons to shred it Wraithguardx10 with spiritseer Manticores can fairly easily shoot it off with their rockets

@@Ben-sn9cw as for the Telemon that’s a bit tougher but any anti tank is going to do a fair bit to it or mass attacks -1 damage works well against things that are 2-3 damage but overall even that doesn’t have that many wounds and will be fairly gotten rid off pretty quickly from my experiences Usually it is getting focused which is how as custodes players we end up getting tabled. They basically oath a unit throw everything at it

They are unfortunately very bad. Main reason is their slow move. Their shooting is bad, their melle attack is good. But with slow move they never charge. The non- forgeworld is OK as he comes back to life on 2+ at end of phase. So he is hard to shoot of an objective.

I've been painting up my Custodes for a few months now, and I'm looking forward to getting them on the table. But I wish the internal balance was better. Even with FW, the range isn't huge, and having a small selection of that being objectively better than the rest is aggravating. I'll still run Aleya and some Vigilators in a beer and pretzels game though. They're fun, even if they're not competitive

I appreciate that owning the Combat Patrol and Boarding Patrol boxes is basically "Here is the foundation for a great list": Total of 10 Guard, 3 Terminators, Trajann, 3 Vertus, 10 Sisters For minimal further investment, I am adding a Blade Champion, 2nd trio of Terminators, and a box of Wardens (using 3 initially). Will see how things fair, if I need to change anything (ie: lowering my Sister count; shifting to fewer, larger, units). The fact that Wardens come in a box of 5, but are fielded as 3 or 6, is obnoxious though (a lot of extra cost for a single model for the bigger squad). I like the idea of using the Vertus Praetors for some fast moving shenanigans, but their downgraded shooting definitely stings. Still slowly working on the painting efforts, so no gameplay yet.

Allarus are so fun to play with. I've been having a blast in 1000 point games where I have several units of this with 1 in deep strike and just do lots of movement shenanigans and pit them against 1v1s where they dominate A 2 squad with 1 leader is 250 points and can deep strike in on opponent home objectives that have weak units holding it, or jump a tank/ artillery piece, zero it, sticky the objective later, then teleport away like nothing happened in another round. The custodian lack of movement is no more when you have these guys around

I think it needs to be noted that this is a relative tier list because compared to other armies custodes start at tier 2 and go to -2.

I had a unit of vigilators lead by aleya destroy a leman russ, aftter losing 3 models to their destroyed transport and another 3 by the tank shock stratagem. They are actually pretty insane if they get into range. Ofc way too expensive to consider them a core unit.

Agreed. It certainly feels like they sometimes set points values by throwing darts at a wall. It also feels like the codex and FW Custodes were done by different people. The disparity in the datasheets and lack of synergy is jarring

Overall I'm happy with where my custodes are at but I feel like they are punishing the Achilles and Vertus Praetors for how good they were in 9th. How does the giant achillus dread spear have less range than a normal spear? Why less movement on bikes and the same toughness as a normal infantry?

@@MrInfin1x Vertus Praetors need to be toughness 7. Hurricane bolters need to be AP1. And Salvo Launchers need to be S10. S9 is useless in 10th edition because theres not very many units with T8. And then their cost also needs to be reduced to 75-80 points each.

Looking at the Custodes stats/points and synergies with characters I can see why my Blood Angels are so far behind. The points costs seem very low for what you get. Valoris being just 10 points more than Dante for example considering all his shenanigans, fights first etc. And then compare a normal Custodes Guardian to a space marine terminator, the added value is immense.

Yes, but when you look at the armies as a whole, the rest of your guys are cheaper You have myriad other variables that will help you win a game against Trayjan, whether it's mobility, obsec, firepower, etc. Comparing armies is where it all balances out Comparing units directly is where it all gets bogged down and doesn't seem to compare equally

If anything all the other special rules Custodes get just reinforces the divide. One of these factions is performing at the very top of the meta and one is at the very bottom. In tournament games BA are performing even worse than the much lamented Death guard and leagues of Votann. Goonhammer 40K stats for reference (18 000+ 10th GT pack games as of writing)

Having so much fun running all gold infantry lists this edition. Though the internal faction balance isn't great, if wasn't fantastic last edition either and at least the current rules allow new players to field something viable without such a heavy FW investment.

For the aquilons: they have another thing going for them, they're the only unit which holds the front on custodes being the most expensive on per-model (non-vehicle) basis. Otherwise space marines would be more expensive with the centurions being ~68 per model and nothing from the custodes coming close to that.

Personally, I'm a little sad that the Sisters, at least my take on this, play so little a part in this army, but when they have to be the equivalent of "humans", stood alongside an army of Terminators+, I don't feel that there could have been much else. They would need to stand on their special traits, and they just don't seem to still have those. I might actually say I am glad they aren't just Battle Shock support, even though that seems like what a squad of pariah would do, but since anti-Daemon might be both too restrictive for them AND too targeting of another faction, and anti-psyker loses so much in 10e, it's just too bad. I know a lot of people don't like Allies; that an army should be able to/have to stand on its own units, and Imperium forces really don't need more Allies only they can take, but I sort of wish that Custodes weren't a standalone faction, and that they could be seconded to other forces. They're currently one of the best factions, so I obviously just don't know what I am talking about, but if one of the biggest appeals of the Arbites Exaction Squad is how many forces can use them, if beneficial...if Sisters weren't forced to compete with the legendary Golden Warriors of the God-Emperor, I wonder if they would be better, overall? If Guard could benefit from decent assault forces they can requisition, since they are lacking there, themselves, maybe the Sisters would be better? Beyond that, glad to see that the Custodes are still hitting hard, after so many years of knowing we'd never get them as a faction. It's a shame that the Grey Knights, which I always felt we got as diet Custodes, because those guys were never going to be an army, couldn't keep copying them enough to play as more "two-wound Custodes" with anti-Daemon and anti-psyker.

Question for those better tuned into the math hammer. Whats the advantage of spear over axe for captains, wadens and allarus? I originally modeled my models with the axes and just curious if its a slight efficiency boost by keeping them with spear or is it substancial?

Plus of axes: +2 str (which is mostly pointless, there's very few vehicles at t9, so at most you're getting a +1 to wound against t4), +1 damage Negatives: you lose an attack, you hit on 3+ and lose a AP point Against t5 3+ it's 3.73 wounds on average for spears and 2.69 (nice) for axes Against t4 3+ it's 3.73 vs 3.34 Against t8 3+ 1.84 vs 2.69 Against t9 3+ 1.84 vs 2.01 Against t10-13 3+ 1.84 vs1.64 As you can see it's strictly better against t8-9, which isnt common anymore due to the change of vehicles Last edition this would've been a fair choice, now it simply is not a choice

The main issue of custodes is, being so strong and with so many awesome units including the best troop choice in the whole game, well, slightly less awesomeness means some units are considered useless like for instance vertus bikers now but, in fact, a unit of two with a jetbike captain could be awesome used properly Of course, since there are many good units around is easier going the way of: guard, wardens, allarus and captains with a blade champion for a nasty surprise

Also the area and Orion are not tournement playable, they cost more than what can go into strategic reserves where aircraft must start

This isn't true for a couple of reasons. Mainly, Aircraft don't go into Strategic Reserve, they go into Reserve, which has a different limit of 50% in mission rules. (They count as SR once the game starts but the limitation doesn't apply by then.) But also, you can start them in hover mode, in which case they can start on the board, which is afaik the only way to have a full Orion in a tournament legal game since when that thing is full it's over 50% of a 2k list.

Just had a blade champion led squad almost single handedly win me a game with its advance and charge and the unstoppable destroyer gave mortal wounds and made then fail a battle shock. Turned a defeat to a victory with one charge

Well... custodian don't get a free model resurected every turn or any heavy weapon and taking the vexila ( for +1 OC ) with the cutodian guard make you lose it's melee weapon you can only have the misericordia that's way weaker than the spear, but i agree they are more powerfull in raw malee strengh

Bro the wardens are nuts. I usually have Trajan leading them and stacking the -1 dam and 4+ FNP makes them crazy. They’ve tanked marines with oath and wraithknights. Truly chadstodes. But now my playgroup knows that and just ignores them lol

@@alistairmorris8224 allarus start on board and run with the blade champ squad, generally as a second line, so if I go second advance and charge into something the allarus are there to pick apart anything that counter attacks, as well as to eat up enemy fire because let’s face it they scare opponents into playing suboptimally

I feel like the Orion Assault Dropship should be ranked higher. Its an expensive unit but it brings a lot of various types of shooting and it can transport 12 custodes or 6 custodes and a Achillus or Galatus.

You can only use one melee weapon in the fight phrase (aside from extra attacks, which the telemon doesn't have), so you only get 5 with one. You do get an extra flamer, so that's a thing. Hopefully they add some kind of rule for two fists getting twin-linked, since the helbrute has that

The grav tanks are ludicrously powerful for the points, and the fact that they're 14W instead of 15 just adds insult to injury; if you do manage to kill the damn thing, it's only worth 3vp with Bring it Down. Also, Guard units are insanely good. My buddy just plunked a 10 man squad of those on the center objective, and managed to kill off Ghaz and his escort of 6 meganobz, and a 20 man boys unit led by a Warboss. How much damage did I manage to do with all of that, you might ask? 2W. I didn't even kill one of those gilded fuckers. I did make some pretty dumb tactical errors (namely getting Ghaz and his retinue shot to shit before they could even get into combat, and focusing my limited antitank shooting on the grav tanks rather than the infantry), and he did roll very well, but come ON. That entire game, I managed to kill 5 'Todes, one of which he resurrected with some Custodes BS. Interestingly, the best rolling of the game was when my killa kans managed to mulch two terminators who dropped behind my lines, but holy shit I got pantsed.

@@Butternades nah compared to other melee armies they are undercosted for their stats. Those armies you listed are undercosted for sure but that doesn’t make custodes expensive. Grey knights are the same god damn cost. Custodians enjoy a stat line that is better than terminators they should cost more. Check out eightbound compared to custodes guard or wardens. Seriously they are too cheap and their characters are too cheap compared to some other melee armies too. Or those armies are overcosted but considering how elite they are supposed to be and how hard they are to remove I think they are too cheap should be 50-55 for their stats and abilities compared to other similar profiles bringing up eldar in any comparison is hilarious anyways they are too cheap everywhere and wraiths hit on 4s

I've had games against other OP factions, but Custodes are by far the worst to play against. Not the most powerful: but the one that can look you in the eye, tell you "I'm not going to care about anything you do, you can't stop or damage me anyway", push all of their stuff across the field, totally in the open, and /not only/ get away with it, but - if you're not playing Eldars, or GSC, or IKs - utterly crush you. They need to go up in points (by a lot) or down in resilience (by a bit), because it's pretty clear they were written to be resistant /against Eldar/GSC fire/. Which need to burn down too, but that's another topic.

A really easy way to fix that is to increase the table size back to what it was plus them just eating any fire isn't a thing is 2,000-3,000 point games most of the time you will have things to kill them unless you play an army gw just hates like deathguard

All Custodes are Tier 4, very unpleasant faction. Being cheap in money and playstyle and easy to paint should be good as an army for young or new players, but they are too powerful so we get weird things like being one of the most popular armies on the scene despite being super elite and hardly any of them alive. GW love those bores. But I guess it is nice and easy to spray a model gold, say he can't be killed and call it a day. Great vid as usual though, Auspex.

Yea, bikes neded a nerf, but not what they done, literally are custodes that shoot worse than a normal unit have decent meele (really not for their price) and are a little bit faster than normal custodes for double the price, I think they just wanted people to stop using the bikes, because now it's better to use custode guards (I as a custode player hate this since I had one bike squad and now is just a overpaid custode guard that does the job worse)
