Fun facts about Navigators: -Due to their nav-gene being extremely recessive, they tend to only make offspring with other navigators, which connected with cut-throat politics and constant family feuds of Terra means almost all of them are horribly inbred -All Navigators, no matter the status of their family, will eventually suffer mutations due to nature of their gene. There are no uniform ways it happens, but it always gets worse with age, to a point where really old Navigators don't even remotely resemble humans anymore and have to be obscured from populus, their family and ESPECIALLY the Inquisition

"and ESPECIALLY the Inquisition" To be fair, while the Inquisition can and some more zealous Inquisitors do sometimes go after Navigators for aberrations in mutations... Usually it's left alone unless it's Chaos shit or they're doing something that threatens the Imperium. If they just have horrible mutations but aren't tainted by Chaos or doing anything, even the most self-righteous of Inquisitors are unlikely to go after them because while they do technically have the authority to do so... The Navigator guilds are one of those entities you simply don't piss off. Ever. Not if you know what's good for you. And while the Navigator guilds are cut-throat bastards against each other, they do protect their own. It would not be unthinkable for an Inquisitor that purged a Navigator that was a loyal servant to the Imperium to suddenly develop a lot of issues with getting reliable transport and suddenly finding out that there's no Navigators available to crew whatever ship he happens to be on. It's the same way you don't piss off the AdMech. Sure, if it's legit heresy/heretek behavior, go for it. But if you're just pissing in their pool because you can technically do so with your authority... That's one very foolish Inquisitor that is going to have one very, very short career as one.

the ogryn are big because of the cold, not the gravity. The square cube law means that if you double somethings size you cube (to the power of three) its volume. This makes it easier for an animal to stay warm in a cold enviroment, they have way more body to produce heat as compared to surface area for them to loose heat from. Its why polar bears, emperor penguins, blue whales (all whales actually), seals, walruses, wolly mammoths, etc. were/are so big, especially compared to their more tropical relatives. Edit: to be fair elephants and wooly mammoths are big because of another evolutionary factor, defense. Get big enough and predators will avoid hurting you. Their size meant they were just predsiposed to surviving in colder climates.

OK! A fun story! I made a character for Rogue Trader (the tabletop RPG set in the 40K universe) with the "false man" background (ie genetically engineered, born in a tube basically) who was made by a heretek. I did not know about the Afriel strain until later, but it just so happens I made her albino. Once I heard of the Afriel strain, me and my GM worked in her backstory that the heretek that created her used forbidden lore to improve on the Afriel strain, and my character was the only succesfull specimen. Bow, here is the real fun part: Me, the player, had an INSANE luck with my rolls. Sneak through a corridor littered with surveilance cameras unseen? Nailed it. Snipe a heavily protected driver while hanging on to a careening guncutter? No problemo. Yes, my character, Mira, was an extremely good fighter/assassin, but it doesnt help that I rolled near perfect almost all the time. Even funnier is that it seemed like my luck seemed to be leeched from the other players, as their rolls were usually abysmal. So.. it was kinda lorefriendly in a way! =D

“The Troth, hailing from the world of Verdantus, are classified as Abhuman. Abhumans are those sub-species whose existence is tolerated due to their similarities to the human norm, and thus accepted as members of humanity as a whole. Whilst this is certainly the case, the Troth are restricted to a single world in the Imperium, the planet of Verdant, whose ecosystem they are incapable of surviving without, and their actual deviation from “true” human biology is unknown. Those few who are aware of the existence of the Troth theorise that they have developed an intimate relationship with the flora of their home world (which by its name is thought to be a planet covered in great expanses of forest or jungle) and cannot survive without the vegetable component of their symbiosis.” Basically, they are plant people. Mostly provide food shipments to the Imperium.

Another canon Abhuman strain are the “Humans with 4 legs”, aka Centaur humans, discovered on an unknown high gravity planet's surface. Discovered by Guardsman Floscan Hartoum and Commissar Leminkanen (deceased by giant scorpion), this knowledge of Abhuman existence on this world remains undocumented to the wider Imperium at this time. “Back aboard the Imperial battleship Ravenger, the Commissar's report is being filed with the Captain, stating that the planet is worthless and inhabited by ferocious creatures and a primitive semi-intelligent alien species unlikely to progress any further. The report then drops off midsentence on explaining that no further action should be taken. The Captain accepts this and forwards it to the Adeptus Terra. Hartoum, sitting in his cell, reflects on his actions, altering the Commissar's already open report to protect the centaurs from exterminatus, as well as philosphizing on whether the Emperor would abhor or agree with his actions.“ PS: A Small Khornate blood cult had been established among some of the human centaur humans on the planet, resulting in conflicts between the various tribes. The status of the species remains currently unknown. Children of the Emperor - Short story.

@JohnDoe-zl6qw2 жыл бұрын
Yep. It's a surface area to volume ratio thing. The larger you are, the less surface area you have relative to your volume. This helps retain heat / insulate better compared to smaller variants of a species. Conversely, hot climates will tend to see a species adapt by becoming smaller (radiates heat away faster compared to their larger brethren).

Great episode! Do remember GW publishing some rules in Chapter Approved for Abhumans but I'm not a guard player so not sure if these actually worked or were more of a comedic thing. Did find this on them (Apparently from the march 2005 edition of WD) Which jog some memories but no idea whatsoever how these worked under the rules at the time. "There are seven different doctrines, BUT to take any of them, you first have to spend one doctrine point on Restricted Troops: Abhumans. Then you have to spend an additional doctrine point on the chosen abhuman doctrine. Quick rundown without any point values below. Feral World Ogryns: FOr a cost per model, you can have Ogryns as Troops and replace their standard armament with an additional CCW. They do not have access to Bone'eads or transport vehicles. Nightsiders: Cost per unit (Guard Infantry), unit gains Acute Senses special rule. Slave Levies: Cost per unit (IG Infantry Squads only), gain Feel No Pain and Slow and Purposeful and may not take any additional doctrines. The Afriel Strain: Cost per unit (Guard Infantry), gain ATSKNF, may take no other abhuman doctrines, may not be combined with Iron Discipline or Chen-Inhaler. May not take any Priests or allies from any Inquisitorial codex. Homo Sapiens Variatus: Conscript Platoon only, cost per unit, gain +1 WS and Furious Charge. Subs: Conscript Platoon only, cost per unit. Units behind Subs gain a grot cover save, Subs never fall back but become pinned instead. Lose the cover save if Subs are pinned. Enemy units may always choose to ignore Subs when determining closest unit for shooting purposes. Gland Warriors: Cost per unit (Guard Infantry), gain Fleet special rule. However, if the fleet roll is a 6, one member dies as the gland drugs kill him."

I think I know what Bricky was getting at with the Homo Sapien thing. That is the scientific classification of the Human species. Some experts have begun to use Homo Sapien Sapien as there is an expectation that there will eventually be a subspecies classification. Like Navigators might be more accurately classified as Homo Sapien Navigo, as they are off-shoots of "standard" humans.

The Troth, also known as Homo Sapien Verdantus, are a recognized strain of Abhuman within the Imperium. They are restricted to the world of Verdant.[1] According to legend, a tribal king called Nemus once ruled over a people isolated from the rest of humanity in the time before the Great Crusade. It is said that Nemus swore an oath to protect his world of Verdant if the planet would protect his people. As a result, Nemus' descendants, the Troth, share a symbiotic relationship with the forests of their homeworld that enables them to "converge" with their environment and confound invaders. Over many centuries, the Troth have supposedly been transformed into beings with flesh as tough as oak and digestive systems that can extract nutrients from the earth.[2] 1: Warhammer 40,000 6th Edition Rulebook, pg. 405 2: Liber Xenologis, pg. 27
