Here's the details Dr. Hemant would like to share on Adequacy of dialysis
1. The dialysis given to the patient is it sufficient or not?
2. Kidney works for 365 day 24 hours and dialysis is only provided twice a week or thrice a week i.e. 8-12 hours a week.
3. As the kidney diseases progresses form stage 1 to stage 5 and the patient starts showing symptoms like vomiting, loss of appetite, drowsiness or edema feet, increasing blood pressure, rise in the water levels of the body leading to breathlessness. Dialysis is started if the above symptoms are found.
4. Adequacy of dialysis parameters- clinical parameters, water level of the body, blood reports, nutrition and quality of life of the patient.
5. Clinical parameters -
a) The symptoms of the patient are reducing or not?
b) Is the fluid being removed or not- the swelling of the feet or the breathlessness has it gone or not.
6. Check the blood investigations- Bicarbonate shows the level of acid in the body. Has it gone down after starting dialysis?
7. Nutrition- the nutrition needs to be adequate. Adequate nutrition: Proteins - 1.2g/kg body weight; calories- 30-35kg/ kg body weight.
8. Quality of life- the life of any dialysis patient should be as normal as a non-dialysis human being.
