I had always thought that Stills was playing lead up to the solo at the end, especially as he matches his singing note for note in portions of those first verses. Thanks for this, Harri - I think the song BLACK QUEEN is on this album also and it further shows off SS' guitar prowess. He can hammer it out like thunder!

I think so as well. The Wah part is loaded with great Stillsisms and I'm sure it's him. Eric holds forth at 4:45 here in this clip. The sudden shift in tone... the vocabulary implied, the touch THAT'S Eric. Any BS list of of those "Top 100 guitar players of the 60's" that doesn't include Stephen Stills is IMHO immediately even more suspect.

Other cuts worth checking out: Love the One You're With, Sit Yourself Down, Church (Part of Someone) and We Are Not Helpless. There are a ton of excellent artists/friends on the album besides Clapton including Ringo Starr, Rita Coolidge, Jimi Hendrix, Booker T. Jones, David Crosby, Graham Nash, I can go on and on. Had to come listen again Harri! You have done some Stephen Stills before. He was the lead vocals and guitar on Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth" and he is usually the main guitarist for CSN, in addition to his solo work. He is one of my favorite guitarists along with Knopfler, Gilmore, SRV and Prince. I'm not sure he is given the credit he deserves. Interesting factoid: He was friends with Peter Tork of the Monkees and actually tried out to be a Monkee. Thank goodness he didn't get it - we might have missed out on the magic that is CSN /Y.

From AllMusic review: Another great pairing of superstars on the Stephen Stills album, "Go Back Home" pairs Stills with Eric Clapton. Although the two don't actually dual on guitars, they both have excellent breaks, and the contract is effective. A loose funk exercise, the song sounds like it was began as a loose studio jam, and the recording sounds and feels like a live take. A simple blues pattern with Stills singing over his own wah-wah guitar accompaniment. Before Clapton steps up, there is a fine, bluesy turnaround, and then a stinging Fender Stratocaster solo by Clapton that brings the song home.

Stephen stills plays the wah-wah guitar at the beginning of this song. He's the most underrated guitarist alive. Clapton is a guest on this song. He didn't write it or sing it, he's just supplying a solo, which Stills could have easily done himself.

You have a great ear, Harri. The engineer, Stephen Barncard, said years later that Stills had left the studio after approving an edit trimming the end of the song. Barncard did a rough chop of the end and left it for later--and then Clapton showed up, saying Stills had asked him to come by and play over the end. Barncard played him the song, figuring it would give Clapton a chance to hear the changes and then he would complete the edit and smooth out the end before they did a 'take.' In the middle of the playback, he saw Clapton pick up a guitar and plug in, hurriedly rolled tape and got Clapton's one take, playing right over the time change at the end. Clapton left and obviously nobody was going to 'fix' the tape after that.

When this album was released, a reviewer for Rolling Stone wrote that Hendrix's and Clapton's contributions didn't add anything to the album. WRONG!!! On "Go Back Home", Clapton was still in the phase of his career of using the outphase position on the Strat, giving it that bright, stinging sound. You can hear the same tone on Clapton's debut album with songs like "Let It Rain", "Bottle of Red Wine", "Slunky" and a few others. He used the same guitar tone on his Derek & The Dominos, particularly the song "Keep On Growing" (BTW, all of the guitar tracks on that song were played by Clapton). Now, Clapton uses what he calls a "woman tone", which gives it a muddy sound. I prefer his earlier style--but to each his own.

Came back here to pass on a concern. So, Herri you want Clapton to play that 15 second lead. But you dismiss Stills. You need to pull up Season of the Witch. from Super Session. Played with hours notice. No time to work out tune. Just kick it. You see Al Kooper set up a studio date for two days. Mike Bloomfield was supposed to have recorded both days. Mike pulled a Neil and split the morning of the second day. Kooper calls Stills and you get side two of Super Session. Stills has been recognized as a top guitar player from way back in the 60s.

You need to go back and listen to Buffalo Springfield and C S N & Y. That wasn't all Neil Young on guitar. Still is a great guitarist. Nash and Crosby arent bad either. Check out Joe Satriani on Big Bad Moon. This was a superb tune though Clapton is still really good,,, but his last great playing was on the blues album From the Cradle,,and the B.B.King record Riding With the King. That's not to say he doesn't occasionally play great on a given song,,but at 75 or whatever he is,,skills diminish,,as even Clapton has stated about his own skills. Thanks man,,enjoyed your thoughts. @Marty Jansing there is also a performance at the Capitol Theater not sure of date but with Bonnie Bramlett of Delaney and Bonnie, who toured with Eric Clapton and there was a live record released of Delaney and Bonnie & the friends as well as a separate concert I think in Copenhagen or Amsterdam on a KZbin video!!! Delaney and Bonnie also feature Rita Coolidge on back up vocals and several other famous people
