It’s ironic that their first hit record was a cover of this Petula Clark/Tony Hatch song. From Pittsburgh, they were originally named The Vel-Airs until their producer re-christened them The Vogues. Petula Clark recorded in French for the Vogue record label in Paris. Clark was actually more popular in Europe than her native UK until her world-wide hit in 1965, “Downtown,” written by Tony Hatch. Thanks Daniel & Harri.

Yes, she was on the verge of quitting recording in English when Tony Hatch (the Burt Bacharach of Britain) asked her to listen to a song he'd just dreamed up for which he did not yet have lyrics. With Tony's ultimate arrangement of "Downtown," the "Petula Clark sound" of trombones and trumpets and piano was at that moment born and became a worldwide phenomenon, imitated by many artists, including Nancy Sinatra, who at the time said, "Let's do that finger-snapping Pet Clark thing."

The Vogues released this classic Petula Clark/ Tony Hatch hit before she did in 1965. They saw how well the reaction to the American Band's hit was doing, first of 8 top 40 hits, and then released Petula's offer. But the Vogues charted it higher. Beautiful vocals and harmonies with a great drum beat and guitar make for a groovin tune. A great time in music. Great reaction Harri. A little Freddie and the Dreamers ? Thanks Harri and Daniel. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

Great song by The Vogues and were one heck of a singing group. FYI, there is a group performing today with three members and not a one is an actual original member. Due to owing the rights to The Vogues name, since the original manager sold it, I guess they can try to pass themselves off as The Vogues. The Vogues were Bill Burkette, Hugh Geyer, Don Miller and Chuck Blasko, with Bill singing lead and Hugh with that beautiful high background voice as well as the other two members. Bill and Don have since passed within the last few years. Thanks for reviewing this great song by this amazing and sometimes forgotten singing group, The Vogues.

I believe they all went to high school together in Turtle Creek, a Pittsburgh suburb of sorts. The original 4 members, Bill Burkette (lead baritone), Don Miller (baritone), Hugh Geyer (first tenor), and Chuck Blasko (second tenor).split up in the early 70's, but the name and hits are still around. Other noteworthy bands from Pgh area around that time were Bobby Vinton (Roses Are Red), Jimmy Beaumont and the Skyliners (Since I Don't Have You), Tommy James and the Shondells (Hanky Panky), Lou Christie (Lightning Strikes Me Again), and Wild Cherry (Play That Funky Music)..

Pittsburgh Sound with a British twist! Simple transformation of a beautiful Pet Clark song like so: ringing guitar intro carried throughout, slightly uptempo, and harmonies from 4 male voices. Really a guys song to a gal he aches for but won't give him the time of day. Pet's version more stately and definitely solo in nature.
