Definitely have a listen to the live version on Conan-I think it’s actually better than the studio version. If you do listen to it, please note that he was quite sick that night and almost didn’t perform. He actually sang sitting down since he didn’t feel well, and it’s all the more impressive that he had the performance he did since you lose a lot of your power when sitting vs. standing.

I like the Conan rendition as well, but the video on this one gets me every time. Notice the end of the video. Music sheets on one side and the boat full of instruments going to join them. Without each other you have silence. Such a powerful song and David is such a powerful singer. Classically trained, beautiful voice. Listen to some of his metal too, like Down with the Sickness, different side of David and his group (the guy with the guitar and the guy with the big drum) but just as wonderful as they are in this song.

We all have our own interruptions of what the music is saying to us . I felt like the S&G version was a soft “I tried to warn you but you didn’t listen “… now it’s to late but The Disturbed version was a call to anger You Didn’t listen .. get angry… now get up and do something about it . That’s why I believe the visuals are just as brilliant as David’s voice . It takes us on this journey to the great divide where they sail to the other side to bridge the musicians to the song writers where everyone’s voices and the music can now reunite and be heard . No matter what that divide might be in your life this song , this voice , this visual hits us in our very soul and takes us on a journey inward and gives us an experience that for me took several minutes to recover from .

I give you credit for contrasting Simon and Garfunkel's original 1964 magnum opus with the Disturbed version! Remember that Lucifer was God's most beloved angel before he fell from grace. He never lost his angelic power, bur he gained the misery of separation from God. David was operatically trained before he sang metal. The song begins quiet and intimate before it builds power, each (false) crescendo breaking into the next, David's voice never wavering. This is why it feels like what you wish you could get from sex or religion.

For yet another astounding rendition of this song, you should check out the cover of it that the a Capella group Pentatonix has done. I think you'll appreciate it too. As for this one, I was truly amazed when I first heard Disturbed's cover of it. I grew up listening to Simon and Garfunkel's and I still love it to this day, but I think Disturbed found what it meant to them and sang THAT and it became something powerful and moving. (I also love the implication that was made with the visuals in the video that although things are bad, that doesn't mean it's hopeless. It doesn't mean we have to just let them continue on this way. We have the power to change the status quo, if we'd just put in the effort to do it.) Thank you for doing this reaction and giving your thoughts on it.
