Yeah, that sounds all good and well for a VH1 behind the music, but in reality, the very first line is from when Paul lived on his own for the first time and had a bunch of roommates, he used to go in the downstairs bathroom to practice guitar, since it had tiles and better acoustics, he said he would turn out the lights and turn on the bath tub faucet and practice. One particular day in 1963 he did that and the first words out his mouth as he strummed the guitar were "Hello darkness my old friend". He wrote the rest over the next several days, and took it to the streets and coffee houses to polish it up. The lyrics were simply poetic angst of a 20 something kid, that he took from things he'd heard in college Lit. class that he hoped would impress young ladies and make them think he was dark and mysterious. It wasn't until 1964 that he played it for Garfunkel and they included it on their debut album Wednesday Morning 3am as the song "Sounds of Silence". At least that's what some guy named Paul Simon said in a 1994 interview in Rolling Stone....lol. He said in an more recent interview that he loved that the people debate over the meaning to this day, and that it just shows that music can be interpreted in so many ways, that if you do your job as a writer, a song can be a gift that keeps giving long after you're gone, and can be applied to many different things, important to so many different people, some might even believe the author had the ability to see into the future!

As mentioned before, this is a cover of a folk song by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel from the 1960s. The lyrics weren’t touched, they just apply even more now than before. The “neon god” is usually interpreted as television or commercialism but it applies just as well to phones, tablets, money, or anything that we are now obsessed with and “worship”. Tenement halls are an older version of the projects, where in the late 1800s to mid 1900s New Yorkers, primarily immigrants, lived in horrendous conditions. The sound of silence is the heavy pointed lack of reaction and hopelessness to inequities in the world, where everyone watches and awaits for someone else to say something.

@@daning9415 yes, Paul Simon wanted it to be more dark and mysterious, to send a message/warning, while Art Garfunkel insisted on it bein an upbeat, more pop version, that obviously didn't get the thought across properly, and why it was technically a flop, back when it first came out. And, when Simon heard this version for the first time, he was amazed with it, and let David know that this is actually what he wanted, but couldn't, due to the issue with Art, insisting on it bein more upbeat, and poppy, instead of starting off dark and mysterious, then opening up, to a kind of hope...

Simon and Garfunkel did this years ago, very folk feeling. Then..Disturded came along and did the best cover EVER. The instrument graveyard at the beginning, then bringing them back to life while music was being written but kept silent. Then the ark crossing the river at the end to bring it together. Greatness. Paul Simon wrote this song but when he heard Disturbed's version he texted or called David, the lead singer and told him this song is now yours, you brought the meaning to the soul of today. LOVED this ❤ it reaches into your soul. What a voice!

No he did not, nor did he text or phone him, he sent him an email the next morning, after Conan performance, that simply said, "Hadn't heard the full performance yet and was interested to see you do it live, well done." I remember because when David Draiman told an interviewer that a few days later, the interviewer said....That's it??!! Hadn't seen it yet, well done!!??.....Draiman was like dude, do you know how private Paul Simon is, and protective of his music, and particular about artists he even associates with much less does a song with or comments on their music. With that email I accomplished two things, total respect from my parents and the ability to die a happy man (totally paraphrasing what David said, but he was literally giddy that Paul even sent him an email) You're thinking of Rick Rubin and Johnny Cash, Rubin asked Trent Reznor of 9inch Nails for copyright permission so Johnny could do Hurt, Trent agreed to it but told Rubin he thought it wasn't gonna work, an old country legend doing an Emo type song. Rubin sent Trent a copy of the video day after they finished editing it, and Trent called Rubin and said it brought him and his wife to tears, literally, and then said, it's no longer my song, from this day forward it belongs to Johnny Cash. The two stories get mixed up all the time though, no biggy.

Kathy here - Disturbed is a metal band. But David Draiman can sing anything. His range is unbelievable. He was trained as a Cantor growing up, as most of his family. But then he pivoted, and when he wanted to do metal, he hired a vocal coach to teach him how to do the growl in his voice. This was a Simon and Garfunkel original. But after Disturbed put out their cover, Paul Simon reached out and congratulated them on their version and said the song is now yours, as your brought forward to today's world. And no, the words have not been rewritten, it is the original song.
@C.Comeaux
@C.Comeaux 8 ай бұрын
Do you have any evidence of this --because I find this basically impossible to believe. I know that Simon was complimentary, but the notion that Simon would say "it's now yours" seems patently ridiculous. I'm a huge fan of Disturbed, but they're just not... Simon and Garfunkle, and Draiman isn't Simon--the best popular music songwriter probably ever and the most important songwriter of the 20th century. Why would he relinquish what is one of his best and best-known songs? This sounds apocryphal to me.

Paul Simon wrote these iconic lyrics in the early 1960’s. Disturbed did not change the lyrics, although they slowed the tempo from the original, and dropped it into a minor key, giving weight, sadness and anger to the meaning. This song has been covered hundreds of times by a host of artists. This one is my favorite, and I remember when the original was performed by Simon and Garfunkel. They also performed this in Central Park in 1981, which caused a huge resurgence in the song’s popularity.

LOL Some of my favorites are "The Light", "Ten Thousand Fists", "Land of Confusion" (also a cover), "Fear", "Hold on to Memories", "A Reason to Fight"....heck, I could go on and on.....

Always fun to see what seeps into you. Excellent cover, Disturbed seriously owns this. Just like Johnny Cash's "Hurt" may be the same lyrics of Nine Inch Nails' original, he totally owns the cover. This one sounds so different than Simon and Garfunkel even if it's the same lyrics. Down a similar path, I still look forward to you checking out the official video of "Deutschland" by Rammstein. (Pull up English captions, please). Not my usual genre 9f music, but the video is like a short film.

Lol you said super old and I literally had chest pains. The original came out in 1964 the year before I was born. This is a reimagining of the original. They literally updated it and brought out the rage that so many young people feel about the state of everything. I think they nailed it.

The original 'The Sound of Silence' is iconic in the same way 'Imagine' is. A song of THAT generation hoping for peace and change. It captured the zeitgeist (the spirit) of the nation / times in the same way 'North of Richmond' recently did.

It was great you reacted to this song! Always positive when we can bridge the past to the future. A classic Simon and Garfunkel from the ‘60’s - yes there were subways then! Paul Simon is a genius songwriter and one who any songwriter can learn from. The lyrics were unchanged, but Disturbed and David gave it the poignant urgency very relevant today. Also, if not, already mentioned, check out Disturbed on Conan performing Sound of Silence live. Equally impactful.

The back story to why he sang this song is amazing. He had surgery on his throat. He couldn’t talk for over a year and this is the first song he recorded after his recovery.

This song was originally written and sung by Simon and Garfunkel in the 60's..their version was a little more, for lack of a better way of putting it, upbeat,but was sort of a warning of what technology was going to do to people's face to face interactions with each other. Never connecting face to face..only reading and texting..i.e. sound of silence. Disturbed's version is the anger of what it has done..the I told you so,but you didn't listen..i.e. but my words, like silent raindrops fell. This version cuts right to your soul, and I grew up with Simon and Garfunkel..loved their music. But this is DEEP, and truly gets the point across. Thank you, B.P. for this reaction.

Simon and Garfunkel did this in 1964, I went and had a listen to the original and the lyrics are the same. I absolutely love this version, it's so iconic. Disturbed is one of my partners favorite bands of all time, it's a tie between them and Metallica. ❤

The song was written in the 60s around the time of the war in Vietnam. There were subways then, lmao. This song was a warning for the world, and it was not heeded. Now this version is more powerful and admonishing us all for not heeding the warning. Humanity needs us to be present and do better. Not stand by and let terrible things happen.

The original song was released in 1964 by Simon and Garfunkel. Though it was solely written by Paul Simon. Disturbed did not change any of the lyrics. I loved the original when I was a kid but Disturbed's version is just so epic. Even Paul Simon himself likes their version which says a lot, as he is normally very critical of any covers of his songs.

This was written in the 60s by Paul Simon. The NY subway was built beginning in 1904. The tenements were built as far back as the 1830s. So yeah, they were referenced long before this.

As an oldie who grew up on the original Simon and Garfunkel, to @blackpegasus, you really need to listen to the original to truly appreciate what Disturbed did with their version. The Disturbed is (IMHO) the gold standard for Sound of Silence. They did a phenomenal upgrade to this timeless and relevant classic.

Just a quick history note on Subways and Tenements. The first Tenements in New York were built between 1820 and 1830 while the first subway in the US was built in Boston between 1895 and 1897. As others mentioned the song was is from 1965. The Simon and Garfunkel version is a different vibe but worth the listen. The tone of the original is more of a warning while Disturbed's version feels like the anger that no one listened.

My mom (who can not stand my music) called me raving…”Did you ever hear of this band disturbed, oh my god his voice, you have to hear how amazing this is…” and I told her mom I’ve been listening to them since I was a teenager, you even drove me to go see them, saying the whole time “I don’t know how you listen to that music,”and now here we are, and you hear what I’ve heard the whole time lol…you and Don mentioned in your Metallica video recently that music has the ability to unite people, and this is an example of music uniting generations… keep up the reactions, always entertaining
