A few corrections: the tractor beam doesn't slow down the target but just keeps it flying in a straight line which is arguably better, especially if you want to kill something quickly using missiles as the target won't be able to evade them as long as you don't launch them ina trajectory that's too perpendicular to theirs, in particular the missile boat with a good use of the tractor beam is even more lethal than the Tie Defender which is both mindboggling and appropriate since the ship in the campaign was made as a countermeasure against stolen Tie Defenders. Also the mag pulse doesn't disable the target as a whole but only its weapon systems for a limited time (something between 20 or 30 seconds), of course its effects are cumulative so multiple warheads keep the target's guns disabled for a longer time. Other than that I can subscribe to essentially everything, this is my personal best game of all time, I've even replayed it from start to finish three or four times over the years which isn't something I usually do for a game this long.

How to differentiate - the DOS CD versions of XW and TF are generally called "Collector's CD-ROM", while the Windows versions are usually called "The Collector Series." I hope this helps.

The colors thing was done for the sake of consistency. In X-Wing, Rebel targets were green, Imperial were red, and neutral were blue. TIE Fighter preserved this color allocation. Also added purple as a second neutral color (to allow missions with neutral factions fighting one another).

Playing as the bad guys - who would have thought it could be so fun. This was my introduction to these Star Warsy flight sims and I got hooked up pretty fast. I have one full playthrough with more than 2000000 points total, and at the highest Secret Order rank. And yes, I played with the mouse.

6:09 Actually difficulty selection has major ramifications - aside from what you have mentioned many of the missions are altered in some way - for example try playing the very first mission from first Battle on Easy, Medium and on Hard. You will notice that depending on difficulty, there will be more crafts to inspect and more goals to achieve. On Easy you only have 2 Primary and 1 Secondary goal, on Medium 2P and 3S, on Hard 2P, 3S and 2 Bonus goals.

Fun fact about the SLAM drive on the Missile Boat. If you have a beam weapon added and throw everything into engines, then engage your slam drive.. you can out run the missile weapons :D

Unfortunately this game has some issues with the turret AI not firing at high cycles. I recommend a cycle count of around 65000.

x-wing vs tie fighter is rare? I have it neatly tucked away in my giant cd case of pc games from my childhood, cd's in perfect condition, the box had better days. iiiiii want to play that now.

BENNYin theTECH No, he's talking about the TIE Fighter re-release for Windows 95/98 machines. It used the X-Wing vs TIE Fighter engine for improved graphics. It also, unfortunately in my opinion, replaced the original music with John Williams music straight from the movies. I am a bit confused though. I always thought that re-release was just available in the X-Wing Collector Series set that comes with two CDs, one is an X-Wing remake (plus an X-Wing vs TIE Fighter "demo" called Flight School), and the other is a TIE Fighter remake. I always thought the later releases of LucasArts DOS games that said "Windows 95/98" were still just the DOS game, and not a special remake.
