When I was a kid growing up near Bristol a classmate spelled Bristol's main concert venue Colston Hall "Cawsnaw". In fairness to him, that's how it's pronounced.

The thought of a chorus of Parisians singing Bristol patois with a French accent is an absurdity that could only have come from Adge.

the great part of this is where he includes the "Don't tell I tell he" very clever, Adge was the best...

Used to live and work in Bristol and not being from Bristol I remarked how I was hearing "L"s added to the end of some words and "height" being pronounced as "heighth" with an extra "h" on the end and completely new words altogether such as "casn't". A workmate appropo of this then sang the chorus of this very song to me and I never forgot it. I thought it was brilliant!!! And now I've actually heard the song in full. I am eternally grateful for your time and effort. Thanks for posting!

In Old English the city was called Brycgstow ("brickt stow"). Add an "-l" to the end of that, mangle it for 500 years and you get Bristol (or Brizzl, if'n yous loik).

There's a joke about a Bristol woman who named her three daughters Eva, Ida and Norma - only due to the accent, they came out as Evil, Idle and Normal.

Cassn't isn't new it's old, means Cast Thou not, same as bissn't, Be-est thou not, Coussn't, Couldst thou not? It's the Queens English - Queen Elizabeth 1st....

I was born and raised in Somerset. As a kid in the 70's my Dad used to say this phrase to us kids all the time. I always thought it was a Yorkshire expression because my dad was a Yorkshireman. I've just realised he was taking the piss out of our accents. He died in 1986 but he's just made me piss myself laughing.

Actually written and performed by Fred Wedlock originally, hence the use of the words 'Thee' As opposed to the Somerset 'Thy' and Bis Bristolian for 'Are You' as inj the Bristol greeting 'Ow Bis?' Much prefer the Fred Version but very difficult to find.

I think it was written by Len "luke" Thomas, but I do have a LP by Fred with this number on . Adge always used to attribute the song before he sang it at The Webbington to Len and give a translation for any foreigners who might have wandered in.
