No matter how hard you try, you can't seem to get anything done 😞.
You're tired and overwhelmed even when the task is simple. It's called burnout, and it affects people with ADHD more than anyone else.
Hi 👋 ! My Name is Alice, I created The Mini ADHD Coach in august 2020 when I was just diagnosed with ADHD at 29.
After years of questioning, therapy, burnout, and chaotic career path changes, I finally understood why I struggled with so many things.
So I decided to share what I learned to raise awareness around ADHD and help the ADHD community thrive.

Most of you may agree that people with ADHD are just perceived to be hyperactive, impulsive, or distracted. Well, they’re not wrong. But these are just some of the more commonly known symptoms of ADHD.
One of the more difficult experiences of people with ADHD, diagnosed or not, is coping with burnout or fatigue.
Getting burnt out can be feeling physically and emotionally tired and not motivated to do anything. You might also get intense headaches or stomachaches.
Some causes of burnout are heavy workload, feeling like you can’t control your situation, lack of social support, and perceived unfair treatment.
Now, how does this relate to ADHD?
Some ADHD symptoms can keep us on overdrive, but in the end, it can leave our batteries drained, thus the fatigue and burnout. And vice-versa, if you feel burnt out constantly because of constant spikes of energy, this may be a sign of undiagnosed ADHD - check with your doctor just in case.
And how exactly does having ADHD symptoms lead to burnout? Let’s go through the factors one by one.
The most obvious one is hyperactivity. Working adults with ADHD, like me, are vulnerable to take on more work because we want to be in constant motion. This can inevitably lead to mental exhaustion.
And closely connected to hyperactivity is hyperfocus. We get so engrossed in tasks at work that we sometimes don’t have space to breathe. And having that kind of deprivation can cause us to break down.
Speaking of deprivation, lack of sleep is also a problem. This may not be an official ADHD symptom, but sleeping problems like insomnia can co-exist with ADHD. And because of this, it’s harder to recharge.
It’s challenging to experience these, I know. But with practice and positive resources, we can manage our burnout and avoid being trapped in the cycle of exhaustion.
Here are some practical suggestions if you catch yourself feeling worn down.
When faced with piles of work, using the Eisenhower Matrix can filter out which tasks can be done now or later. This can help avoid overwhelming ourselves with unnecessary responsibilities.
Setting healthy work boundaries can help regulate your workload. Start by setting a “cutoff time” so you’d know when to stop working. You can also decline when someone asks you to help them with something.
To summarize, ADHD and burnout commonly co-occur and can leave you depleted and empty. But remember that you are not superhuman, and you can only do so much. Prioritize your mental health, and practice putting yourself first - because YOU are important.

I have no idea anymore what it feels like not to feel burnt out. My ADHD meds mean that I can now keep going through states of stress and fatigue that would previously have landed me on long-term sick leave, but I can't see a way out of the cycle of over-work, burn out, crashing, and then starting over again.

It's my common state. Things which work for me most of the time: make a list of all things on your mind, without any order, divide the list into things to do and worries, look through your worries list to see if there's anything that is truly important and requires action, colour code to do list where red is urgent and important, green important but not urgent and yellow is more like 'would be good to do', next to each point write time estimate (intentionally allow more time then probably will take), count how much time is required for each point, see realistically what's the situation. Put the list aside, do guided meditation to breath out and empty your mind, keep a pen and paper at hand during meditation to write down anything that you can't let go. After meditation start action on the urgent list. If it's still discouraging, start progressing with the timer e.g. 20 minutes work, 5 minutes break, whatever works for you. If you still can't start moving, make a list of things which you would do if you had all time and resources in the world. Make it as long as possible, find something you can do from this list, promise yourself to do it after 2 hours of working on your urgent list or do it first but control time. Still no movement, do as much as turn off your phone and push yourself to move around the room, sit on the floor, brush your teeth, take a shower, walk in the street, worst case scenario lie without moving for as long as you want but with all gadgets switched off :) sorry for this extremely long read but maybe it will help someone to find inner power :)

What sucks about ADHD is that it's not just dealing with executive function failures, but having to work extra hard to both make up for your screw ups/ falling behind as well as get ahead.
@literallieme

I forgot to bring anything but my phone to work (because I just left knowing I was late) and worked so much harder under heinous amounts of stress that kept piling as the day went on. I kept crying saying I was gonna get fired and that I was on thin ice when nobody said that to me, I just thought screwing up that bad wasn't normal and just adhd. Obviously I kept my job but I'm always hurrying, my phones always dead, I forgot at least one thing, and my parents get mad at me for freaking out unintentionally. I have a big research paper assignment due tmr and I'm completely burnt out but I need to write another paragraph and put it all together. I'm trying to make this interesting, but I'm burnt out because I was initially ahead of this assignment and now I'm still behind, and I'll get angry at myself for not being better and take it out on somebody else, adding to the stress. I'm not sure if i need self love therapy or adhd meds because having adhd causes the self loathing and the self loathing doesn't want me to feel like I'm helpable or worth any effort.
@FaithReconstructed91

@@literallieme I'm sorry for the stress and frustration you are going through. I myself sometimes stress out and burnout over work related reports and other assignments not just being done but as accurate as possible. A few months ago, I had to redo a report 3 times which in itself takes a while to complete even once. This lead me to having one of the worst meltdowns in recent memory(luckily not around coworkers or meetings and whole working from home). My best advice for you, myself and everyone is to keep learning and (with some effort) applying ADHD friendly strategies and not give up no matter how many times we fall off the horse.

Very helpful video, I feel for a lot of women in particular In the workplace struggle with completing tasks in time or repeatedly because they feel shame in talking about it to their boss or colleagues where they feel could be treated differently, lose a job or offend someone . Perhaps allowing your boss to know quietly what you struggle with could offer you a "buddy" can't remember the exact name .... But according to mental health people with ADHD, neurological conditions are entitled to having a helper. Whether that's all countries , I'm not sure but I believe this to be true in Australia and America??

This perfectly describes what I’ve been going through. I ended up quitting my job bc even after reduced work it just felt like it was too much and they kept expecting me to be a high performer. I basically never said no to helping for 5 years and they just kept taking advantage of me. I’m scared to not be working but I have to prioritize my mental health and I’m thankful my husband will support me while I try to heal.

I am in the process of getting a firm diagnosis. I always thought I didn't have any condition apart from anxiety and depression. I was a hard worker at school but it took me forever to do homework, my focus got the better of me. I think the stress of being punished, bullied kept me from showing my true self at school. I think I mask alot and it burns me out. What I am noticing now at uni, is I am having meltdowns and hyper focusing because of deadlines, then I neglect myself (not eating, forgetting to self care). I often hide away and hope things go away.

Sudden energy boosts snd eventually crashes have been all of my life. I ended up on disability. Often feeling restless, walking around literally rest-less. I can sleep at night but generally my energy is all over the place. Then I find a topic of interest and deep dive until I feel done with it. Then search for a new "project". It never results in anything. And I mostly keep to myself because I haven't had much luck in finding friends. I'm not autistic. But there has to be blind spots. I think it's adhd. Starting early 2024 with a psychologist to maybe determine this. ❤

I'm meant to be doing my college work for tomorrow so of course I'm here instead - It's 11:20pm and honestly I've just felt so burnt out the last year but that's even WORSE at the moment because I lost my job (also ADHD related lol), so now I need to finish my apprenticeship within 3 weeks so that means cramming 6 more months worth of work into those 3 weeks bro. I just want to rest, and I'm worried I'll mess up the next 3 weeks and make things harder for myself (not that it's giving me any extra motivation to do anything)

Oh wow just found this after a burnout. I've had burnouts after periods of heavier srress and work loads but just assumed it was maybe laziness or something. I didn't know it was another symptom of ADHD. This last burnout was one of the nastiest I've had since college. I cpuldn't muster energy or mental clarity to get anything done. Its still a slog but i'm more functional since working to improve sleep habits and increasing vitamin D in my diet seems to help too.

Burn out in general is finally recognized as a legit mental health problem. ADHD or not, burn out can affect a person to the point that it can destroy their lives. Those with ADHD get burn out for similar reasons, but potentially reach that point sooner than neurotypical persons simply due to the complexity of having ADHD.

Nope, can't, my colleagues are as buried in work as I am. Sure, we try to help each other, but the total amount of work is the same. Not a good work environemnt for ADHD.... Only good thing about it is that hyperfocus actually works in my job.

I’m also awfull at tidying I struggle to put things away after using them it’s just not I’m my routine I have a large stutter and I’m ofen very anxious that people are judging and watching me I don’t think before I speak and I can’t stop things coming out my mouth one of my biggest symptoms is that I used to always say I have to multitask I can’t just do one thing and I think that sums it up a lot I’m pretty convinced I have adhd but I wonder what everyone else thinks

I'm pretty sure I had burnout through university. I bought your book but didn't find any doctor yet who could do a diagnosis... Also I talked to my mom about the topic but she thinks I'm just depressed idk I don't feel depressed anymore I mean sometimes maybe but not sure I hope I'll find a doc soon...

I have ADHD myself and it’s not depression. It’s the everyday struggle of whatever job you do , eventually you just get tired of the same thing everyday . Regardless of what you do . I’m facing this problem at my job because I have difficulty focusing despite taking my meds . I tend to over analyze too .

I'm so depleted and empty and chronically ill that I literally can't fucking relate to anything people are saying about 'work' lmao. I fucking want to die bc it feels like I pour all my energies into health and I just have. no. energy. no matter what I fucking do.

If this is the extent of your relationship with ADHD then you must've been spared the difficulty of even even being able to comprehend the task. If I'm correct then you don't know the worst of it

Thanks for the tips, I usually feel burnout when I have a lot of homework and because I don't want to let it to another day I hyperfocus on it but sometimes my friends ask for my help with math problems and because I don't want to be a bad person I help them and so I spend much of the time helping others and then I do all the homework of the week in one day, after that I feel so weak and my brain just want to stop thinking, I know I should not do every homework in one day but because I know I tend to procrastinate or forget a worksheet I had to do I have no other choice than do everything the same day so I don't forget about it, but thanks for the tips I think I can make my environment a better place for me so I don't get a big burnout, I followed you on Instagram and I'm so happy now that you have a KZbin channel, the video was so cute and wholesome 😝
