Congratulations!!!! Welcome to the club!!! Big hugs for if you like hugs! I found out Asperger's at 38, and adhd at 55, in 2020. Knowing is everything!!! I am so happy for you! Its not that its always great to be this way, but what is great, is knowing about it, and getting appropriate help, rather than being like we are, and not knowing. Well done!!! Welcome to the combo club!! : )

Congrats! ADHD at 18, Autism at 42 for me. As the G.I. Joe cartoons said, "Knowing is half the battle!" I heartily recommend the book "ADD-friendly ways to organize your life" - it really is about ALL of your life areas, and it helped me a HUGE amount in building coping skills that actually work! I recommend it to everyone. On the more emotional side, the book "You mean I'm not lazy, stupid, or crazy?" was a real find. It's written by a couple of women, and the audience is primarily female, but I think it can help anyone with the emotional side. Those are my "go to" books! Best of luck going forward!

100% the reason I stay on top of basic household tasks is because of my family. The combination of having someone counting on you for clean clothes and a lunch tomorrow plus just the body double accountability of my husband helps so much.

My mom has often said "the house was never cluttered like your apartment when you lived at home" and I often have to remind her a huge difference between then and now is that I live by myself and there's no literally no one around to keep me accountable. Body doubling is an invaluable ADHD hack.
@KateFrazer-x6u4 ай бұрын
This is the same for me. I wonder how I can do all the organising for my children - feeding them, washing those clothes etc, but for me, never make lunch and very crap at preparing for myself. I had my first appointment a few weeks having been referred by my son’s psych. At 50, I wonder why I can manage to do stuff and not sound so crazy, but then I realised it’s because people are relying on me 😢

It IS quite romantic! I wish I had a real life body double rather than having to find an internet body double.
@Atuchy8 ай бұрын
How do you use body doubling online? I’ve always been hesitant cuz I wasn’t sure I’d find it helpful. I’m autistic and adhd so I’d if I’d just be more anxious with a stranger around.
@thehomelesshebrews8 ай бұрын
The word ROMANTIC doesn't mean what you have been programmed to think it means. It actually means you are ROMAN-like; have a ROMAN state of mind, and they are PAGANS, who are PERVERTED. Valentine's day is actually LUPERCALIA, and it is one of ROME's most SEXUALLY PERVERTED TRADITIONS. Do some research, and you won't be wanting ANYTHING ROMANtic.
@brendatomlinson7 ай бұрын
@@AtuchySorry just seeing this. I recently got on Facebook 😖and found an ADHD group for body doubling. No regulations really, you can post what/when you want to get something done and someone offers to double you at that time. Each person works on their own thing. I might clean and you work on your laptop. You can FaceTime, zoom, whatever works for you and your double. A phone call. Remaining clothed is the big rule! lol

My space is incredibly untidy but the space I share with others isn't, I don't know why but other people seem to be enough motivation , specially now that my mom broke her ankle and I have to do everything, it feels that the priority is always on critical, so everything is organized, my bedroom though, is more messy.
@TheGeneral757468 ай бұрын
For me it's the accountability to another person. I don't want them to know how bad I really am (masking) but also I don't want them to have to deal with the same conditions that I put myself through because I just don't have the mental energy to care enough about it for just myself.

Oh man I recall one time my (now ex) wife went out of town for a week and I had promised I'd clean up while she was away. A week goes by in a flash and I'd done nothing. I get a message that she'll be home in 90 minutes and you wouldn't believe how much I was able to clean in that time. She had no idea I had literally only *just* cleaned up and was satisfied to come home to a clean house.

I have to have a reason or it has to get to madness before I tidy and sort the house. It is like today I have sorted my study as had a reason to do it which was the dust on my desk and also I could not stand having to turn around the echo dot and so moved it to the desk I also can control it easier. And big one swapped out the extension lead sounds a small change but this one is surge protected and also has more sockets. So I don’t have to remove my laptop which means the battery dies as it’s a crap work one. Then I can plug something else in. Boom! It’s been on my list for ages to do just not had the motivation until today

Yeah, this is what I have been thinking. When my wife travels for business, I go into 'bachelor' mode and then clean everything up about an hour before she gets home. When she's around I can 'keep up'. I haven't been diagnosed (yet? getting assessed next week), but a lot of content here really hits home and I'm thinking that my assumption it was just routine 'single-men-are-apes' reversion may have been a bit unfair to my gender...

I do wonder how tidy I'd be when living together with a partner. That's because there's a big difference for me between how I keep my personal space and how I keep shared spaces. I don't share any spaces with anyone at the moment, but this wasn't a function of whether the other person was there, but of whether to be there in that space. Then again, I'm also pretty happy with all this personal space...
