This video shows how to prepare the trading section of the income statement.
I break this down step by step instead of giving you a full, complete format to memorize all at once.
Hopefully this helps you understand this section better so you'll be able to ace this part of any question :-)

Yes! You are correct. At the 35:32 time point I entered the amount for returns inwards ($1,500) instead of the amount for closing stock ($5,000). Thanks for spotting that :) Which means cost of goods sold should have been $32,000 and gross profit should have been $14,500.

Really great explanations and i love the acronym , surely going to remember the formula better now . This video cleared up all my confusions on trading account and i just want to say thank you for being so patient and co-operative in all of your videos , also wanted to mention that you mixed up the figures for closing stock with the returns inwards figure but no criticism , you're actually one of the best P.O.A teachers I've came across apart from mine and i enjoy your videos . I take it that if the company made deliveries has well it would be: Sales revenue add: carriage outwards Less: return inwards Net sales Because they made money from delivery? Or is it added somewhere else?
@adapttuition
@adapttuition 3 жыл бұрын
Carriage outwards is the cost of paying to have goods delivered to customers.
@adapttuition
@adapttuition 3 жыл бұрын
But I understand why you would think that it's the customers who pay for delivery. We pay delivery charges on everything from food to letters to clothes to anything from Amazon or any other online vendor. But in the CSEC context, carriage outwards is an expense and it is included in the expense section of the income statement.

Hi Kimberly, drawings is not an expense and as such does not go in the income statement. It is included in the balance sheet as a deduction from the capital balance. Maybe take a look at this Balance Sheet playlist kzbin.info/aero/PL9u_QIMhEllv09b3EnxcupBc8WjjFvuGb Hope that helps.

Hi Lawrence, That was an error on my part. I used the returns inwards figure in error. This means that the cost of goods sold was supposed to be $32,000, and therefore the gross profit was supposed to be $14,000 Hope that helps.

Thanks for this video it really helped. So does this mean if there is a Net Loss cogs would be more than net sales?
@adapttuition
@adapttuition 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! That is very correct. If COGS is greater than net sales then there will definitely be a gross loss. And, unless there some significant source of other revenue that will not only offset the gross loss and cover expenses then it is almost certain that there will be a net loss too. This was a god question. Thanks for asking it 😊

Do u have to do trading accounts to prepare income statements? Or u could start with income statement for the year ended whenever?
@adapttuition
@adapttuition 4 жыл бұрын
It depends on the question but usually if it's a trading entity (one that buys goods to resell) we need to start with the revenue earned and the cost of sales. Formats differ so the one you are talking about may very well be possible

Pls sir, why are will go to less both the returns outward and returns inward. Thanks sir
@adapttuition
@adapttuition 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Joel 😊 We subtract returns inwards from sales because when customers return goods that decreases the revenue previously earned. Similarly for returns outwards, we subtract that from purchases because when we return goods we no longer have to pay for them, so we sort of decrease the expense of purchases and as such we subtract it. Hoping that helps you to understand a bit better, Joel 😊
