Alec, this answers all of my questions on this topic. I doubt I would ever actually attempt to make the adjustments you just demonstrated but I really appreciate you showing divers how such adjustments are made and how the gear they are using operates (or should operate). It reminds me of your comments about dive operations which prohibit the wearing of gloves or knives. Rather than simply tell you that they are prohibited, a smart business practice is to explain to the customers their concerns fully so that a conscientious diver will attempt to avoid that issue all together. If nothing else your demonstration should make us all safer divers, either in the water or in our local LDS. Knowing the proper way to do something, like this, and watching a technician complete the same exercise (successfully or otherwise) lets us know if we have found the right dive store and technician(s). Thanks.

That's the point Joshua. Information is power. If you know how something is done, or supposed to be done, you have power. I have not suggested that divers do their own service - just the opposite. But there is no harm in divers understanding how it's done!! Thanks for your support. Alec

Welcome back. We need more 'vintage' divers like you. Old guys with experience and common sense. Scuba is one of the safest modern sports. In 60 years of diving I've seen very few problems that couldn't be traced to human error and the biggest mistake was usually immaturity - cockiness we used to call it. I had my share of it but managed to survive. Now I'd like to help others do the same - enjoy wonderful underwater experiences - safely. Thanks for watching. Alec

No problem Alec, it's not easy as my username doesn't reflect my actual name, that is until I decide what I'm going to do with the channel. I think spring has launched into summer very quickly, we're seeing 30˚c in the shade and they're predicting it will be as hot as the summer of '76 (certainly hottest June in 20 years so far), which I fondly remember as a little boy of around 3'n'half years old. I love it bright and sunny, unlike most brits i don't complain either "oh its too hot, too humid, too cold, too rainy) you get the idea. How do the seasons work over the CA, does spring come earlier or later? PS, I will reply to the pm. Much love from England

Alec, I commented in this video 2 years ago as a returning vintage diver thanking you for bringing me back up to speed with new equipment. My LDS has sent me to a couple of manufacturers training schools. Again, I'm new to servicing equipment and I know you've repaired regs for years. At one of the schools the trainer reminded us to press the purge button when adjusting the orifice so the sharp edge wouldn't cut into the soft seat. Is that really an issue?

Not dumb at all. if you are quite mechanical and have the time, parts and tools, fixing your own reg is certainly possible. Safe? That's for you to decide. I often ask, how comfortable are you with your next door neighbor's kid, a nice boy and really handy with tools, fixing your brakes just before you start on a cross country trip with the family. If that doesn't bother you in the least, fix your own reg. Take care. Alec

I've got a buddy who has some old Dacor Regulators that he really likes. The problem is when on the surface, it chatters. It is almost as if the secondary valve opens and closes rapidly when he inhales. It's annoying but it does not affect anything underwater. Is there a way to prevent that? Do you increase the breathing difficulty to prevent easy opening? Do you replace the spring? I'm just curious. I have learned more from you in these videos than most of my classes and really enjoy your videos.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter7 жыл бұрын
As you suggest, I think the second stage is too sensitive. Check that the IP (intermediate pressure) is correct. Then re-adjust the second stage. Let me know how you make out. The old DACOR regs are among my favourite. Alec

@markosalami25 жыл бұрын
Hi Alec, fantastic video thank you! I have just bought a new regulator set (atx40/ds4). It doesn't free flow when I open the air but it does free flow if I subsequently purge the regulator (and also free flows if I remove the second stage from my mouth underwater with it facing upwards slightly). It breathes very well though! Given it doesn't free flow when I don't press the purge, does it still need adjusting as you have demonstrated here?
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter5 жыл бұрын
It sounds as though it's adjusted perfectly. When you remove it from your mouth underwater, always tilt the mouthpiece down. Problem solved. There's a simple explanation for that phenomena but the only solution is as I've suggested or made it harder to breathe. Alec

Great tech tip!! Thank you! Any thoughts on side mount diving? Pros cons, safer or just too complicated?
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter7 жыл бұрын
Yep! Lots of thoughts. If you think it will benefit your diving, go for it. Taking a short (Intro?) course on Sidemount is a good idea to try it. It seems that Sidemount divers fall into 2 groups. Those that take full advantage of the concept, practice the skills and use it a lot or all the time, and those who have tried it but use it halfheartedly and more for show than need. Done properly it's completely safe - I wouldn't say safer! Done properly it's not much more complicated. Again, if it will benefit your diving, the extra complexity is worthwhile. Alec
@viclee3136 жыл бұрын
I will suggest to press the cap (diaphragm) of 2nd during this adjustment. So that the sealing (will be lifted by pressing diaphragm) won't contact with orifice.

@alexandrerondeau7 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks Alec that was great! A question for you! I was wondering if you could give me a neat trick. The middle part of my DIN regulator keep on getting loose. At the dive site I just tork it a little more with the proper Allen key. I brought it back to my local dive store and the o-ring was completely destroyed. How can I prevent the DIN to become loose? I've seen some threads online where people use make shift wrench to get the regulator on and off. I thought of getting one of those rubber strap wrench. It's all easy to install it with dry warm hands only finger thigh, but after a dive at 10C water cold and wet hands just don't do it! That's probably when I twist the first stage.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter7 жыл бұрын
I'm assuming that you're referring to the middle part of the DIN connection - the part that does NOT turn. That part absolutely should not be coming off. The reason the O-Ring was destroyed is that it was extruded partly into the gap and then crushed when you tried to tighten it. Your dealer, if he's a dealer for that brand, will have the correct torque to install it. NO GREASE. In fact, he should clean the threads with acetone or something equally deadly to you (it dissipates almost instantly). Then it is fitted with a new o-ring and carefully threaded in. I suggest he hold it upside down so he's threading it up into the reg. That way the 0-ring won't dislodge. When finger tight, grasp it in a regulator holder and torque it properly - no more and no less!! Make sure you are using the exact proper size Allen key. It's made of brass and can easily strip. If you still have a problem then contact the manufacturer directly. Ask for technical services and explain it. i pretty much guarantee they'll jump to take care of it. By now the internal thread of the reg body could be damaged. In that case, nothing you do will work but the manufacturer will take care of it. I would do this for you but few dealers go that extra mile. Do it yourself. Let me know what happens. Alec
@alexandrerondeau7 жыл бұрын
Excellent! Thanks for the info. I'll get my regulator back tomorrow and I'll use it this weekend. If it ever happen again then I'll contact Apex directly. Really nice tip! I've seen tons of different home made solution online. Some say to use loctite, some teflon tape. For sure, I ain't touching it! I brought it to my dive store I only tork it at the dive site to save my dive. I'll let you know if that happens again. So from that I also note that I should never use a tool to un-mount my DIN regulator from a tank. It's should always be finger thigh and hand power to remove. Right?
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter7 жыл бұрын
Right!! The DIN, like the yoke, is hand tight only on the valve. The O-Ring insures that it seals and once sealed under pressure, it won't leak or fall off - assuming there's no other problem. There are very, very few places where an adhesive like LocTite is recommended by the manufacturer. If the DIN adapter is properly installed on your reg you simply don't need it. That is one place where the use of a thread locker might be OK though. It's not in the air stream. Try to get it done properly. Explain the issue to your LDS serviceman and hopefully he's up to the task. It's not rocket science. It just takes knowledge and care and proper tools. Alec

Nice. I just adjusted a couple of my second stages because they had a slow leak on the surface.

Alec, In the good ol' days, second stages had a clip or button, for relieving the spring pressure off the second stage LP seat. Do you think, is still necessary now days to do the same, or the materials have improved to a point, that does not have the "memory effect" on the seat? Thanks

Yes Michael. Some did. Healthways, Sherwood, DACOR and Scubapro for sure that I know of. Many 2nd stage seats are now 'floating' so when the air is off , the pressure on the seat is off too. I don't think it is, or even was, a big deal. I had a video about this quite a while ago. Maybe someone remembers and can recall it. Alec

Have you done a show on how to get parts for vintage equipment I need parts for aquanetic 2 The exhaust valve seems to have a larger post to hold valve in .also a daycor Olympic 800 will need a seal kit soon
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter7 жыл бұрын
White Stag is tough. It was never a big seller so there are few around to get parts from and no one has new parts of course. Take the exhaust valve to your LDS, preferably a couple of different stores, and ask them to try and match it with valves from their modern service kits.. The diameter of the valve is the most important part. It can be very slightly smaller but can't be any bigger. If the stem is bigger on the original, so is the hole. You may have to silicon it into place. The DACOR 800 is a great regulator. I used one for years and loved it. That you can find easily used. New parts are another story. If you get stuck, let me know. I have a source of NOS. Alec

Hi Alec. I love your tech tips. Lots of knowledge. I have a question. The demand lever in my 2nd stage (octopus) is sitting a little high. When the cap is closed it pressing on the lever and causing a free flow. When I remove the cap the free flow stops. How can I fix this?
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like it needs a little PM service (Percussion Maintenance). Assuming the cap and demand lever are for the same unit, it may have been bent outwards somehow. To clarify, there should be no free flow with the cap secured so your local service pro can fix it quick and while open, adjust the 2nd stage breathing effort to be perfect too. I don't advise divers to self service parts, like bending the demand lever, as if bent to sharply, can snap off underwater making the purge button fail when pressed. Hope this helps my friend and good luck.

Alec with this vid you passed into more questions. I always wandered : i have my beloved poseidon cyclon with 11.5(13 for deep setup) bar intermediate pressure. it means that up to -110 meters the second will deliver air ok. i do not care how it feels at 10 meters because i never stay there and these were not designed for shallow. what happens if i go to -140 meters. At this depth everything counts a lot. I know that these will be fine up to -200 meters and more , but what to expect? And I wold love to see a vid on poseidons from your perspective.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter7 жыл бұрын
Poseidon makes great regulators. They've only had 1 dog - the 5000. It didn't last long. The 300 Cyklon is still in use and still very popular. Now, to be fair, some of that popularity is because that for many years Poseidon was the only manufacturer that made a really good quality, high performance regulator. Now there are lots. So you simply don't see Poseidon in dive stores as much any more, at least not in North America. Not because they're not good - because there are lots of USA brands that are as good. About your IP question, it really doesn't matter what the IP is - 125 to 160 is the normal range and most are 125 to 145. And it definately doesn't matter what the IP is with relation to the depth you dive. So the fact that Poseidon is at the high end, 160 psi, is neither a benefit nor disadvantage. It's just what Poseidon engineers have designed the first stage to work at. If a dive store tells you that a regulator is a good choice because the IP is higher than others, leave that store before you get hurt!! You need to understand that the IP is measured at sea level - or as close as possible. Let's say at the surface. If it were possible to measure the IP at depth (it is but it's difficult), you would discover that the IP is always the sum of the IP at the surface (say 160 for your reg) + the ambient pressure. That is, if the surface IP is 160 psi, the IP at 30' would be 160 + 14.7 = 174.7 psi. At 100' the IP would be 160 + 58.8 = 218.8 psi. You see, the IP must always equal surface IP pressure PLUS ambient pressure. That ensures that the relationship between the first stage and the second stage is constant. Thus you always get the same breathing effort. Now some smart guy is going to ask, "How come the reg doesn't start to free flow as you go deeper? The IP is increasing and should start a free flow." Because the increased pressure from depth is also acting on the second stage and is added to the 2nd spring pressure that is balancing the IP. Hah! Now you see. And, Chirana, you also see that having an IP of 160 is just a fluke of design and gives you no advantage over any other regulator, in that respect anyway. I hope that's clear. Alec

Alec, when tuning a reg that has the option for the adjustable breathing effort knob built in, should that knob be set to max air when tuning from the hose side? that way if it is to hot it can be turned down? Thanks!
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter2 жыл бұрын
Manufacturers have different recommendations for this issue. You should try to check the service manual for your reg. Most will suggest setting the knob to it's lowest setting (light spring pressure) before making the internal adjustment. Since the knob is most commonly used to stop a slight freeflow this makes sense. The knob can only increase the spring pressure, stopping any freeflow. Personally, I set the manual adjustment for 1/2 way, then set the breathing resistance to be as light as possible without freeflow. That way you can slightly increase or decrease the spring pressure using the knob as you need to. Hope this helps. Alec

I watched this video after I watched the tip on cleaning the second stages. I notice in this video you didn't use a special tool securing the nut that's in the plastic mouthpiece before turning the bigger nut to remove the mouthpiece from the hose. Is the nut that's in the plastic part of the mouthpiece, not an issue here?
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter5 жыл бұрын
Good observation. Each reg is different. Some have a nut that can be held while you loosen the lock nut. But some regs, USDs regs, for instance, have the body nut completely embedded in the plastic body so it can't be held by a wrench. In these cases, you must be VERRY careful to not tighten or loosen too hard. If that nut spins in the body, you'll have to get a new 2nd. Alec

What are your thoughts on full face mask? I would love to see a Tech Tip on them.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter7 жыл бұрын
Full Face Masks used to be quite common. There were maybe 5 companies that made them. Today there;'s only a couple and they are the same really. They are very expensive and the only advantage they offer is good communication. That means both divers need one. I suppose being able to chew gum or smoke might be an advantage. They're also hard to clear and hard to equalize. Kinda' like Dry Suits - you spend a lot of money to get a small advantage and usually end up adding several problems too. Alec

Thanks for a very useful video you have here. I have a Beuchat VRT30 set. What is the optimum immediate pressure for this first stage? Is this the same across other brand?
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter7 жыл бұрын
Every 1st stage is unique. I don't have current Beuchat service info. It may be available on line or from your LDS. It's a pretty standard balanced piston 1st stage. This exact regulator is used under different names by a number of scuba companies as is a common practice today. Each company tries to market theirs as unique and uses different descriptions to set it apart from the others. Sometimes those attempts get silly. Sales literature claims it has an adjustable HP seat but that's not exactly correct. The seat can be 'adjusted' but it's hardly a simple affair and no different from any other similar regulator. The optimum IP is set by the manufacturer and is critical. Many divers think they can improve performance by increasing the IP but all they do is upset performance and generally that leads to other problems. Other divers think they can improve a regulator's resistance to cold water freeze-up by decreasing the IP but that's also not true and that practice can lead to a drop in flow and/or an increase in breathing resistance, both of which can lead to diver trouble. The IP is a product of many factors that are beyond the divers control. Changing the IP from factory specs is a 'no win'. I hope this answers your question. Alec
@tulaBat7 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much Alec. What I was looking for is the factory preset IP of this first stage. What happened was I took apart my first stage to clean it myself but I forgot make note of the original IP. That was my mistake :). After I cleaned it and put everything back together, it worked OK. I took it for a dive and noticed that the first stage making whistle sound during breathing in. The sound happened to go away when I consumed about 1/3 of the air in the tank (about 150 bar left in the tank). At the moment the IP I measured is 150 psi. Any suggestions on this case? It works ok but the sound is annoying. Thanks.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter7 жыл бұрын
Ok. So you're already into working on it. 1. The whistling noise is harmonic vibration. It's similar to the sound you get when you rub a moist finger around a wine glass rim. It's a common issue with dive regulators but fortunately not serious. It's certainly not life threatening at all but it should be fixed as it indicates 2 parts (at least 2) are not working well together. If you had the proper factory service manual you would know which parts need lubrication and which don't. Some parts, even some O-Rings are NOT supposed to be lubed. A whistle is commonly caused by a poorly placed spring under the piston. That spring must be absolutely square to the piston and both ends of the spring must be square. With long use in one position, it's possible the spring is worn on one side. Since you've rotated it, it's complaining. 2. One solution is to place a very thin silicon washer (spacer) under the spring on either the body side (best) or the spring side. That will affect (raise) the IP however which must be reset. I'm not sure how the IP can be adjusted on this regulator without seeing it. 150 psi is probably OK but I think lowering it a bit (135-140) might help. After doing that you will need to adjust the second stage to match for the easiest breathing. Try to find service manual if possible. Good luck. Alec

@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter7 жыл бұрын
The Omega is one of the few regulators that is different (I did mention that!). It will free flow very easily if you don't handle it right. On the other hand, it's a beautiful breathing reg. If it free flows regardless of what you do, only a serviceman can fix it. Alec

Hi Alec... i got some issue here for my 2nd stage scubapro s600. The supplier/seller (PACIFICA DIVE SHOP ) CEBU PHILIPPINES. I bought a new purge cap.they install it. Now when i try to test. Air leaks from 2nd stage. What u think? Does changing purge affects some of it. ?

Hi. I tried what u did say in this video. Freakin awesome. Solve my diving day. Btw.... adjusting that with a tool is ok? Do i need to bring on tech guyz to fix? Or this is it? And why free flow happens? Thanks.. hehehehhe
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter6 жыл бұрын
You don't need anything fancy. You're good to go. When they installed the purge cap they didn't re-set the lever height so the diaphragm was always pushing on the lever - freeflow. Adjusting the seat as I showed you moves the lever slightly away from the diaphragm - problem solved. Get diving. Alec

Do you have any thoughts on those 360 swivels between 2nd stage hose and 2nd stage regulator?
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter6 жыл бұрын
I used to think they were a good idea. They sure looked good and the sales hype sounded wonderful. But then I tried one!!!! The problem is that the swivel is too loose so it keeps swiveling down. That is, when you pick up your regulator 2nd stage and bring it to your mouth, you expect it to be at the right angle with the mouthpiece facing into your teeth. Just open your mouth and stick it in. This should happen even if you grab the hose instead of the actual body. But with the swivel, particularly if you lift the reg by the hose, the mouthpiece flops down at a weird angle, sometimes even facing away from you. There is no control at all. You MUST grab the body and turn it to face into your mouth. It almost becomes a 2-handed operation. In an emergency, it could be a problem. Otherwise its just a nuisance - a nuisance that you paid extra for! These days, I suggest divers simple get flex hoses to eliminate jaw fatigue or reg body weight. They are probably cheaper than 360s, don't require service and don't create deployment problems. This is one of those things that isn't apparent until you try it. Some may like it but for me, when you weigh the cost and service required annually, the benefit simply isn't there. Take care. Alec

Hi, what would cause the 2nd stage slot to be needed to be adjusted? If it is hissing, has this slot moved in the 1st please? Thanks
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter5 жыл бұрын
If the seat in the 2nd gets dirty or drys out, it will leak even if the 1st is ok. But generally, if the 2nd is leaking, it's a problem with the 1st. Alec
@in2scuba26 жыл бұрын
Alec, wouldn't it be better to adjust the 1st stage to the recommended IP which the 2nd stage manufacturer states as correct, then adjust the 2nd stage? I realize that your adjustment here is a "field" adjustment just to get you in the water and save the day tho.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter6 жыл бұрын
You are quite right. One would always adjust the IP to manufacturers specifications first. The you set the 2nd stage for best breathing. There's an assumption the second stage is the same brand as the first but it really doesn't matter. The 2nd is set to the IP of the 1st regardless of brand. Thanks for watching. Alec

How do you adjust the 2nd stage to the actual intermediate pressure from the 1st stage on a atomic aquatics SS1 or a Scubapro Air2?
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter3 жыл бұрын
That is a very specific question and I don't give out actual service manual procedures (one of the rules to being a brand service pro). Google or Scubapro can be searched but a pro will do it right and maybe let you watch, if you ask nice. Take care Ronald.

Does that pressure / tendency to free flow change with depth tho??
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter Жыл бұрын
Free flow is affected by the temperature drop with depth. Typical cold water dives in summer at Tobermorry, Ontario Canada can be 65F on the surface dropping to 35-40F at 100 ft or inside a wreck. As water temperature drops the risk of a free flow increases. Watch my videos on cold water environment kits for 1st stages and what causes free flows for more information. A
