You know Admiral Akainu "Red Dog" was the one blowing up the evacuation ship in the buster call of Ohara, Nico Robins birthplace. He was, like Kuzan a Vice Admiral back then. He was mentioned as a friend to captain Jonathan back in G8 filler. The paradoxical part being, that Jonathan turned out to be a reasonable marine. I m sure you know by now, he s the hardest of the three and his motto is "absolute justice".

I fell out of my chair laughing when I first read the chapter with Luffy and Co suddenly falling out of the sky. Perfect comedic break to the tension and heaviness of the arc. And it had been month(s) of chapters since we last saw Luffy or any Strawhats at all. How many series can ditch it's main cast minus the main character for months, then ditch the main character as well for a month or 2 but still tell a story you are invested in. The speed at which Oda gets us invested in Oars Jr, they way Garp has to wrestle 50+ years of being a Marine vs Ace as a Pirate... all the new characters... It is crazy. Akainu's Hawaiian shirt hinting toward a Hawaii related devil fruit.

It's heartbreaking in Garps part. he genuinely tried to protect both Luffy & Ace by wanting them to be Strong marines cause he knew how cruel the world government is. So he truly wants to protect the both of them. And if Luffy & Ace becane marines, Garp is able to protect them if The both of them is within his jurisdiction.

He promised Roger that he'd protect Ace from being killed for the crime of being Roger's son, but Ace went out and became a pirate on his own, it's as much for his own crimes he's being executed as well as for Roger and Whitebeards. Garp works to fix the problems in the Marines from within rather than from without - how can he do that and ask for an exception to be made to the law because it's someone important to him? Some reckon if Ace had called him Grandpa or had asked him for help in that moment Garp would have defied orders and helped him - but we all know Ace won't do that, he's too proud to ask for help even when the obvious solution is to ask for help. And his name for Garp is 'Old Man' or 'Gramps', it would feel strange to him to call him Grandpa.

You may not like Doflamingo, but he was spewing facts right there in his speech. You said "you get killed for deserting in the civil war, that's a story lesson" (this also happened when the soviets backed down, they got gunned right then and there), a bigger history lesson is "the winner decide what's justice", the winner are always the good side and they always get to modify and warp all kinds of details and events, painting the losing side as pure evil while the winning side hides all their war crimes. Like the whole thing about civil war being fought over slavery, which was not, it was just a secondary objective but then they made it seem like the south was in the war just to keep their slaves.

Nah I stand by my opinion that Ace is just stupid and stubborn. Ace in fact caused all of this but Whitebeard is a great "father" so he doesn't want Ace to feel bad. There's some fair criticism in that assessment, but Ace had his good points too. I think what you said about people loving him just for being cool is true among real world fans (until we learn more about him), but characters within the OP world do have deeper reasons to love him. Ace is loyal, fun to be around, and has a strong sense of justice. He just has some problems with leadership and knowing when to back down. But again it's true too many fans latch on to "cool" characters extremely easily, without much reason yet being given.
