Everyone else in life learns to cope with these experiences all of the time and are not such snow flakes about it. Brian O'Driscoll was exactly the same when he didn't get picked for a lions test. While I can sympathise with Warne not liking being dropped for that game, I also think it was an overreaction as far as attacking Waugh's character at the time. I don't necessarily believe he was scapegoated because if anyone probably could have been for that loss in the third test it was Healy for dropping Lara before they won. Warne however during the series was still not bowling his best and MacGill bowled superbly during it. I think it was not only ballsy of Steve to make the call but also smart to pick Colin Miller. Two leggies was easier for the left handers to deal with but Miller offered off spin which ended up causing trouble enough to win them that test.

Steve Waugh made the correct decision by dropping him and they subsequently won the final test match. Obviously Warne didn't like being dropped, if he had played better in the series he wouldn't have been dropped.

I think Warne/IChappell were right Waugh captaincy wasn't quite in Mark Taylor or Ian Chappell's level but make no mistake he was a good captain. Before Warne's sad tragic death, I listened closely to everything he said. I think perhaps he may have gotten this wrong we are all human, genius's make mistakes. I know his family and friends will miss him, I will miss listening to the great man...

He was only able to do that because he selflessly put in time personally coaching some of the tail in the nets, most famous being Glenn McGrath. As a result, the tail also made other runs with other batsmen, not just SWaugh.

Some context. In the first 3 tests Brian Lara belted the Aussies. Steve Waugh wanted a bowler to spin the ball away from Lara. Two leggies played in the first three tests Warne and Macgill. One had to be dropped. Warne had taken 2 wickets @ 150 in the series so he was dropped

What a terrible reason to be dirty on the great Steve Waugh. The selfish comment, who knows, maybe there is truth to that? Though his results indicate that even if his intentions were selfish he did a lot to help Australia be successful as a team. Perhaps he was selfish in other ways that can’t be seen from outside the inner sanctum. Who knows? But the second reason? WTF? To be crook on your captain for not selecting you in one test match? Warne played how many tests? 150? He had a brilliant career for Australia, probably our greatest ever bowler. To be bitter over that and to broadcast it on national television is pitiful.

Warne projected his own self entitlement and selfishness onto Steve Waugh. Warne believed that his ego was much more important than what was bent for the Australian team. Check out as well Steve Waugh's dignified and mature response to Warne's unfair,wrong, vicious, public attack. Remember as well how Warne badmouthed Waugh behind his back in order to get rid of him as captain. Warne was an excellent bowler but I will not believe any of his allegations against Waugh. Warne even sneered at and mocked the teamplayers who respected Waugh.

A Young Person, Lara only belted the Aussies in 2nd and 3rd test, in the first test the Aussies belted Lara along with the rest of his team, bowling them out for 51. The reason Warne was dropped was this: he had only recently come back from shoulder surgery and obviously wasn’t fully fit and firing. However, Lara had actually treated him (Warne) with respect, but had been severe on MacGill. However, MacGill had 9 wickets in the first three tests, Warne only 2, both of them tailenders. McGrath had dismissed Lara twice in the first three tests, Gillespie had dismissed him once, and he had been run out once. Two of those three dismissals of Lara by McGrath and Gillespie had been for low scores, and since neither of the aformentioned MacGill or Warne had ever even looked like getting Lara out, it was a matter of attacking Lara with pace, and picking whichever of the two leggies who, on current form, was more likely to dismiss a fair number of the rest of the Windies line up. Miller came in as a stock bowler who could switch from medium pace to spin. And so it came to fruition, McGrath and Gillespie dismissed Lara once each in the deciding test, for an even 100 off only 82 balls in the first innings, and cheaply in the second innings, and Australia levelled the series, as the then Mighty Windies had done to us out here in 1981-82.

Warne played 3 tests, took 2 wickets at 134. Miller replaced him in the final test & took 3 wickets @ 22.00. The 3rd test saw WI get 9/309 to win on the last day. On a worsening pitch, Australia got bowled for 146 yet on the last day pitch Warne managed 0/69 off 24 overs & he thinks he shouldn't have got dropped??? He felt entitled to play and so showed that his ego was much more important than the Australian team. He had even badmouthed Steve Waugh behind his back to the team in order to get rid of Waugh as captain. Compare his accomplishments after cricket to those of Stephen Waugh. I won't trust anything that Warne said about Waugh. Why don't you check out what the other team mates said about Waugh. Further check out Waugh's mature response to to this low, viscious, petty, unprofessional, uncalled for attack. Seeing that you can be swayed by one disgruntled person without checking what other teammates say and then insult Waugh, it most definitely is better you remain with Warne. Steve Waugh is respected worldwide as a captain, person and for his charitable work both in Australia and India.

Lara was in great form in that series. In 3rd test lara helped west indies win by 1 wicket and warne was pretty avg in that match. Waugh dropped him in last test and brought in stuart macgill. Aus won the match in end thanks to mcgrath who got lara both times in that match and langer for his ton. Waugh justified his decision of dropping warne due to poor form but don't forget warne the bowler made great comeback in worldcup 1999. Warne need to move on.

Steve waugh was a brilliant leader and this story emphasises it. Dropping, possibly the greatest bowler in cricket history, but short of form at the time and his vice captain to boot, shows balls of steel. Well the problem Shane highlighted was really that Steve conveyed his decision in a really terrible manner. Steve obviously was in his own head stressing about the call itself and didn't regard how to tactfully put that to Shane to make him feel valued. He should have done it 1 on 1, made it clear Shane was, when fully fit a hugely valuable member of the side. Instead he abruptly in public forum threw Shane under the bus. Terrible man management.

Warne should not have spoken his mind on TV. That said, he has not said that he disliked Waugh for this sole reason. As for Kumble, while he is not in the same league as Warne as an impact player & a matchwinner, what an asset he was, for India, especially in Tests! Curiously, I have always felt that India could have had a better test record from 2000 to 2006 had Kumble been our test captain. I think he was tactically more astute in analysing the game, than Ganguly. (Ganguly was very motivational and non-parochial leader wihtexcellent man-management skills). For a start, Kumble would have promoted Laxman in the batting order, ahead of Ganguly, in tests. Ganguly, all through his test captaincy, *criminally* under-utilised Laxman, as a middle-order batsman. It reeks a bit, of selfishness.

I'm sure there is a substantial degree of sour grapes on Warne's part, but Steve Waugh clearly is an unusual and extremely hard-headed man, and was probably very difficult to play for at times, although undoubtedly a great player and captain. I also think people are being too hard on Warne here: yes, he shouldn't have said that on national television but at some point in the course of three weeks you are going to forget about the cameras and drop your guard a bit, and sharing confidential information with people is a way that you bond with them.

The Iceman was a brilliant Captain and formed one of Test crickets best ever teams. Win/loss ratio was around 75%, the highest of all time. Had great faith Matthew Hayden and Andrew Simons and persistenced with them until they both rewarded his faith. The Iceman cared about and loved the Australian Test team and wouldn't let a personality difference get in the way of winning. Best to ask other players about Iceman's captaincy. Wow, I didn't realise that there was that much tension between Warne and S Waugh. I actually thought S Waugh has been Australia's greatest captain. I am a Victorian and will always push my own players first however if Shane was recovering from shoulder surgery and Aust won that test match in West Indies then resting Warnie did no harm. I know he'd rather have played but every player at some point gets omitted for various reasons. S Waugh may have been selfish but I prefer himas Captain rather than M Taylor or Ponting. What I didn't like about Mark Taylor was a comment he made......" I was picked as an opener and I won't play anywhere else in the batting order".........that is wrong. If you get picked in your national team you play wherever helps the team and where the captain needs you. If you're inflexible you shouldn't be picked in the first place. Every opening batsmen should be able to bat at No 3 if needed.

I can remember lots of pundits and public wondering what McGill had to do to get a permanent gig. Bad place to air grievances though. Waugh was a great captain.

@@shanewilson199 why should have MacGill got a permanent gig? Its rare to play two spinners in every test or ODI. I'd play 3 pacemen, 1 leg spinner and 2 specialist medium pace bowlers in most teams. Maybe even 4 pacemen depending on the pitch. I personally think Warne & May have been the best spinning pair I've seen in an Aust team.

Warnes mindset is part of why he was the greatest leg spinner ever. He had total belief in his ability and himself, and refused to believe anything else. His poor performance was due to injury. But, he still believed he was the best bowler, and nothing changed his belief in that.

Selfish cricketer? He scored 32 test tons and Australia won 24 of them (this included a century in each innings], lost 5 and drew 2. One of the draws Australia would have won but were robbed by rain on final day, the other was a high scoring draw that featured an innings of 277 from Brian Lara. Of the five losses, 2 were on account of Brian Lara's Genius, another VVS Laxman's in that infamous test in Kolkotta. As a captain Australia won about 71% of tests, all bar 4 series (two drawn, one to rain the other to Lara's genius, two lost, one that astonishing series in India in 2OO1, another a rain ruined affair in Sri Lanka that made it effectively a one off test] and also won back the world cup on the back of brilliant batting from Steve Waugh. It wasn't just for being dropped that made Shane Warne irrational when it came to Steve Waugh, he was also jealous that Waugh got the captaincy after Mark Taylor retired as Warne started to believe the hype of Ian Chappell in touting him (Warne]. Prior to that Warne's best friends were the Waugh twins, as he wrote in a book around 1997, and in fact Warne rated Waugh's captaincy higher than Taylor's - but later he did an about face on this in his second autobiography and it was all Taylor for captaincy kudos and Waugh was shit.

When I met Steve Waugh at kids cricket I found him to be a quiet polite person who just liked to sit alone to watch his Son play. He had obviously decided that he should not be an influence and kept a distance. I was in West Indies 2003, and there were Australian supporters spreading rumours about Steve Waugh. I told them to shut it and no business of theirs. The bullshit that jealous people spread must be very annoying.

It's pretty obvious why Steve Waugh was the captain and not Shane Warne - someone had to make the call and leave out a bowler who was useless in the tests leading up to the one he was dropped in. Shane would have left himself in even if he was the worst bowler in the world at that moment. I'm sure Laurina is going to do a "Steve Waugh" to Shane on "I'm a Celebrity" - Go Laurina!

Make the call, sure, but it's all about how you deliver the news to the player you're standing down. Waugh sounded like an ass. Sad because I was a big fan of his at the time. Now I think it is befitting that Waugh faded into obscurity with a bunch of shitty on field performances toward the end of his career, yet Warne went out on top!

I don't think Waugh's decision to drop Warne was proven right, as there's nothing to suggest Warne wouldn't have played better in the do or die test and the team win the test with Warne. Yes, Waugh had the right as Captain to make that decision, but he could have delivered the message to Warne more humanely and with respect for Warne.

This series was after 1998 tour of India when Warne was already torn apart by onslaughts from Sidhu, Sachin, Aznar etc. He didn't go to West Indies on a high, and faced Lara and co, who further capitalised on softened up Warne, so dropping him became inevitable, Steve waugh or no Steve waugh

Tugga was absolutely right to do what he did and won the test match. No more justification is required. Warnie played 3 tests and took 2 wickets @ 134 in that series. His ongoing hatred of SWaugh diminished him in my eyes.

I rather paradoxically am on both sides here. Yes the moment would have brought out the best in Shane and he had more than earned the benefit of the doubt. This moment made Steve Waugh’s captaincy. He saw that Warnie was struggling he had Stuart McGill who would be the great leggy ever if he hadn’t been stuck behind Shane so why not use Stu. Plus it sends a very clear message to Ponting, Gilchrist, Hayden, langer all of em. You’re not irreplaceable. Perhaps Steve should have been more tactful with it, sold it to Shane that he feels he came back a little early and instead of getting him injured bowling his guts out in the windies that he wants to rest Shane up for the tour of South Africa or India or England that was coming up. But publicly call it a dropping so everyone else gets the message. That’s how I would have handled it.

The lad was full of himself. He undoubtedly was a legend of the game though.

Warnie was a brilliant player. In the top 5 greatest of all. However these comments show his immaturity as a person and his shallow, superficial personality. And perhaps that is the sacrifice he unwittingly made as a person that allowed him to be in that rarified space. It's still no excuse for making comments of this nature about a long time team mate and another of Australia's great players. As someone who no doubt believed in the code of 'what happens on the field, stays on the field' and in the trust and sanctity of the team environment, these comments are particularly distasteful and for what? This is a difficult one to take sides! On one hand, Waugh's captaincy was very impressive & on the other hand, dropping a cricketer of the calibre of Shane Warne, is not the best of decisions. Warne did not take his place for granted in the national team & the number of occasions he has won matches for Australia, is numerous (including the 1999 WC, with Waugh as captain). And Warne, in all possibility, would have been a very fine captain of Australia too. All that said, Warne could have avoided making this video.

I love Shane Warne. I’m the same age as him and I live in Bristol, England where Warney played club cricket when he was young for Imperial Cricket Club in Bristol. Anyway Warne was a genius and should never have been dropped by Waugh. I didn’t give a stuff if Australia won that game and Waugh was justified in his selection, Warney should have still played because next to Bradman he was the greatest cricketer of all time. RIP Shane ❤️
