Was there, first time I'd been to the cricket. Dad took me and my sister in the MCC members and whilst she was bored shitless, I was in awe. I started bowling leggies in school cricket the next week as a result and kept them up for many years. Love ya Warnie
@PYTHAGORAS1012 жыл бұрын
I was a waiter at the time serving celebrities and politicians in the MCG Legends bar. Everyone stopped working, eating and drinking and moved towards the long thick glass window to watch him go for the hat trick. When he got it, someone opened the thick glass door, and the roar of the crowd came in. I jumped up and down and yelled "he got it" and then I noticed that I was the only one in the restaurant celebrating. The bloke next to me just turned away with a filthy look of disgust in his face and all the guests just quietly went back to their tables. I was like WTF is wrong with these people? There was no joy of seeing an amazing historical sports achievement live in person. I was bewildered by the absence of humanity and happiness. It turned out that it had to do with politics. There was a campaign to heavily tax tobacco for health justifications at that time. Shane got in the way of that because he was televised smoking more than once while being a famous, legendary and much-loved sportsman I did not want to serve the assholes anymore and I quit working there.

As I type this, Australia has just gone up 2-0 in the current Ashes series, following a controversial match just completed at Lord's. I watched this clip for some Warnie nostalgia, and to be reminded of Australia's Golden era of cricket. What I wasn't expecting to see was the replay of Mark Waugh's catch at 0:51 in the clip. There has just been a controversial decision in the Lord's test. Mitchell Starc caught a ball on the boundary, and as he fell to the ground, his hand clutching the ball touched the grass, very similarly to what Mark Waugh does in this clip. Mitchell Starc's catch was disallowed, but Mark Waugh's wasn't. I wonder if the law was written differently in 1994?
@hoagy_ytfc Жыл бұрын
Yes, it was different then.
@mikemcnally1454 Жыл бұрын
@@hoagy_ytfc thanks for clarifying. Although, it's hard to imagine that Mark Waugh’s catch would actually be disallowed in today's game. Begs the question as to whether the wording of the rule needs some more fine tuning.

We worked fifteen minutes from the MCG, and once Gatting got out we agreed we'd better get in there or it might be over. Ian Chappell led the rise of the Australian cricket team, the fight for better pay for the players, and professionalisation of the game through WSC.
