Nice tutorial! How did you duplicate the circles so they are the same distance from each other?

This video was really helpful and clear thank you so much! I went between the video and illustrator trying out each of the functions and possibilities as you explained them and this enabled me to really understand how layers work and how much you can do with them.

Nice video. But while you've explained the HOWs of layers, I was looking for some wisdom on WHY we need layers (and sub layers) in Illustrator. Thank you.

Hey that’s the same thing I’m looking for. Did you ever find a useful video ?

Design hierarchy, organization, easier to align elements to the comp or other elements

One use I know of is for animations in After Effects (import in Ae as Composition/ Composition-retain layer sizes). For instance your layers can be body parts and you animate different parts in Ae.

I am very new to illustrator but I have found on quite a basic level that the reasoning behind layers is to organise an illustration or drawing so that you can easily pick out and isolate different parts. In the poster show in this video, you can easily find the center illustration and change the colour or make the whole illustration transparent or change the size... sub layers allow you to then isolate specific parts within a layer eg. the scroll underneath the illustration. Before watching this video I was really struggling to pick out different parts of a drawing and to not move background elements around. I think once you start to draw in illustrator you will see how much accuracy layers allow for.

One of the best tutorials on Illustrator that I've seen so far, thanks a lot, Will! Loved the speed of the teaching, that you stick to the topic (and not starting absurd with "how to create a new doc, turn on the program, the pc and where is the socket" in the video about layers, for example) and the way of teaching: makes you want to stay focus, but also return the smile. Great job!

thanks for sharing. I work with 2d engineering drawing (pdf) when I open the it is just massive amount of objects... grouping them is a nightmare. I also have dashed lines (4x) stacked.. So i have to delete them manually.... Is it possible to select objects and just say move to a specified layer( I would create them of course)?

dope tut. i wanted to know how you create layers for objects already made. like you made the mistake of not adding layers until the end. how do you that?

Question if you created a drawing on one layer can you create another layer and replace what is there with a piece that you newly drew
@JakesVideos6146 жыл бұрын
Would it not make more sense to have it like: Flags --- Poles ----- Outerline ----- color --- Black lines etc so if you move the flags, you have all the correct lines / colors in there.

OH right...you are right. LOL I don't understand why i cannot open up photoshop files with My Paint program on my PC. Could you give me any tips. As well InDesign and Illustrator files, also those i cannot export into word documents and paint program. It's really frustrating. Thanks for the help.
@MisterBinx9 жыл бұрын
Most programs have their own special file formats. Those file types can only be used by that program. So an Illustrator file might not open in Photoshop depending on what kind of file it is. Jpeg files should open in bot Illustrator and Photoshop. The big thing here is compatibility or file types for the program you want to open them in.
@ellamarie22589 жыл бұрын
So does that mean that I can open Illustrator files with My Paint program In Microsoft. That is what i need to do. they are PNG files. I have saved them all at 72 Dpi and I have to make a full coloured double sided, 8.5x11 page book 8 pages on glossy paper that has to be bound and i have to hand it in by Tuesday. Im kinda fraeking out, cause I can't open the files and the quality it terrible and I don't know why.
@MisterBinx9 жыл бұрын
I don't know what kind of files My Paint can handle but PNG is a pretty common file type. I would be most programs can handle that. If not, try .tiff or .jpeg. I forget a lot about compression types but I think .tiff is a lit higher quality than .jpeg. PNG might be better than .tiff but if the program doesn't work with it then it doesn't matter. Try using other file types. Save that PNG as something else then try opening it in the paint program.
