For whoever is having pain with the pencil tool, double click it to open its settings, and make sure that "Edit Selected Paths" is enabled and its value is at 20 pixels(Max). After making that change, using the pencil tool has been faster and easier to work with. You can experiment a bit with its settings like Making the Fidelity more smoother so your lines are more cleaner (less points). I have the fidelity on max smooth, which for me reduces a lot of how much I have to fix. This video has taught me a lot of the power of the pencil tool. I've used it only a few times here and there since most of my work isn't organic form, but recently I wanted to expand more of what I can do and your video helped me a lot! Thanks for sharing!

That "Mighty Swirl" Video was a massive dose of motivation to use the Pencil tool. Eventually, after spending days watching tutorials on pencil tools, I ended up making a brand pattern that I was blown away by myself xD. And now, this video--- I am speechless. If anyone is reading my comment, you can be sure that this is the only video you need to watch to master the Pencil tool. Don; 't miss out. Do the practice, and you will fall in love with the pencil tool. Once again, thank you so much, Abi, for the tutorial and Exercise sheet. You are an absolute Queen in Brand Designing!

Well done! This is amazing to hear! The pencil tool can be really tricky and fiddly to work with but the results it can produce make it all worth it. Really appreciate this comment, thank you 😊

omg, thanks a million. these exercises are similar to the “zen of the pen” exercises from the very first Wow illustrator books written years ago by Sharon Steuer. i did them over and over again till I became a master of the pen. I’ve avoided the pencil for the simple reason that my wrist is fused from a car accident. I didn’t realize that wobbly lines can be redone and redone. i can now incorporate the pencil in my tool box. I love the joy, dedication, and excitement of your videos….and the “rubber” comment/phrase (condom in US). I’m sure many US viewers have teased you. Reminds me of that quote “US and Great Britain …..two countries separated by one language.” lol. thank you!

Absolutely inspiring video, following the exercises now. Thank you :) For those who (like me) are using the pencil tool for the first time and are running into issues with editing/erasing the existing path, double-click on the pencil tool icon to bring up the "Pencil Tool Options" and make sure "Edit selected paths" is turned on (it was off for me by default). I also turned up fidelity halfway to "smooth" for fewer anchor points. Not entirely sure if I'm following Abi's settings and/or if this was mentioned somewhere and I completely missed it, but I thought I'd share!

Most of the time I use it just to get a rough outline as a starting point and then I’d use the smooth tool and anchor handles from there to refine the shape. You're definitely blowing my mind with the true functionality of the pencil tool. I've avoided it for so long! In my years as a designer, I've occasionally downloaded fonts that "do not permit modification." Is this something you come across frequently or ever really concern yourself with? It's prevented me from wanting to play in that space too much, but I'm probably overblowing it.

If you want to modify the shape of a letter, here are the steps: • Convert Text to Outlines: • Select the text. • Go to Type > Create Outlines. This will transform your text into editable paths. Important Note: • Once you convert text to outlines, you can no longer edit the text as regular text. You'll be working with shapes.

Aloha e Abi! Firstly, MAHALO PIHA for sharing this knowledge and guidance!!! I woke up feeling creatively motivated to learn illustrator this morning, due in no small part to the content you share! I’m working on an ipad, and I think there’s something about the pencil settings I don’t understand or know how to access. If you Abi or anyone else can help, In exercise 1, I’m wondering how you change the inside of the letter to grey while keeping the outside white or transparent? I’m not sure where I lost my way, but I’ve been fiddling for quite a while, and I haven’t a clue how to navigate through this myself! I’m feeling really challenged right now, but giving up is not an option! Especially not after what you have shown me is possible with this software!!! Mahalo ā nui for your help!
@abiconnick16 күн бұрын
Aloha! Thank you so much for your kind words. Really glad to be part of your creative journey!😊 I think the problem you might be running into is a result of you working on the iPad. Illustrator on the iPad is super useful for digitising sketches using the pencil tool - the issue is though is that it's a pretty condensed version of the software and you're limited in terms of how much you can do on there! I'd open it up on a laptop and have another try if you can!
@END1ndu5tr13516 күн бұрын
@ Mahalo! I started to have that hunch yesterday as I tried to push through… I’m sure it’s capable of a lot but there’s far fewer resources on Ai iPad online too, which doesn’t help. The worksheet and your content are still *BIG VALUE* None the less!! But I think you’re right. Maybe it’s time to start saving up for a laptop again! Any creatives have avenues that they went for financing or grants to acquire the equipment? This is my partner’s youtube acct, but I have a LLC I operate as well, so maybe if there are any resources for that as well?

Abi you're so good with the pencil tool in the past I thought for sure you were using some kind of tablet lol! Its funny you're doing this video considering I wondered what you used to make use of that tool so well (and watched your desk tour video to see if you had some special equipment.) Anyway, this is right on time!

Thank you so much for all of your videos!! I'm using the pencil tool for the first time and I can't fit the pencil with the typography like you do... Can you do a video with your 'preset' pencil tool for beginners please? Can you explain in detail? Thank you Abi! Love you

Great video! But I must be missing something with the using the pencil tool as a rubber as I can't get it to work? Do you need to hold down another key when using it as a rubber?

Hi! I love your videos, and have a video request. If you could make a video including all the shortcuts you use in Illustrator, it would be appreciated. And thank you for creating these videos it helped me soo much. :)

@@abiconnick I want to second this request! So many keyboard shortcuts and settings and it's so overwhelming...but I honestly believe with your teaching style I might FINALLY be able to use Illustrator without all the frustrations that have made me give up over the years. Your videos are changing my design game in a major way!

@abiconnick I love your videos and am learning a lot even though I am wayyyy older then you. LOL I am trying to use the pencil tool to trace an imported sketch of mine like what you did on the flower in this video. The problem is I need these all to be separate shapes so I can apply fill colors when done tracing. Every time I start a new line from an existing line it connects with it and makes it all one shape. Should I be using a different tool? I normally use the pen tool but like the look of this pencil tool. Thanks

Thank you so much! I'm curious to know what is unique about the pencil tool & makes it a better option instead of the pen tool?
@abiconnick2 жыл бұрын
No Problem, glad you found it useful! So essentially the pencil tool gives you more freedom and creates a hand drawn look. 😊
