When I try to combine the pencil layer with the letter like you did with the a and n, the letter gets punchouts of white all through it and the pencil line changes. Any advice for that? I used the Unite tool in pathfinder.

I followed intently, created outlines, clicked on the anchor points but the entire word moved, there was no manipulaion to the letter....Then I tried again and it worked, but then on every other letter, just the letter moved,...eventually by playing, I found out that you DOUBLE CLICK on the anchor point, so why didn't you say that?...
