@@LauraCoyle now if only they made the clipping mask easier to do. It’s way easier in Affinity Designer on iPad. Hopefully Adobe will adopt that method of simply dragging the object “into” the other object in the layers panel. It’s so easy. For some reason when I make a clipping mask in Illustrator iPad my objects lose their fill color.
@LauraCoyle4 жыл бұрын
@@WelbornJeff that sounds interesting, I haven't used Affinity, so I don't have a feel for how that works. In Illustrator on the desktop, the clipping mask shape always loses its "appearance" (stroke, fill, color, etc) and become invisible, so it's working the same way on the iPad - it's the expected behavior for Illustrator, but I can see how it seems weird. You always have to put the masking shape on top of the thing you want to mask, select them both, then in the menu choose Make Clipping Mask. At that point, the masking shape becomes invisible, the appearance of the object underneath stays the same. Once you have a clip group in the layers panel, and you draw a new object on the layer you can drag it inside the clip group and it will be masked with the other objects - so in that way it sounds like it works a little like Affinity.

Great video, just subscribed! Sorry if I missed this, but my kids and I can't seem to find a quick way to "fill in" a shape. It looks like Desktop Illustrator has a Paint Bucket Tool, but we're not seeing that in iPad version. Any ideas? I know this video touches on swapping the stroke and fill, but we weren't sure if that's the same thing. Edit: actually nevermind, I think we figured it out. You use the 2nd from the top tool, and touch the pencil to the line that makes up the shape you want to fill in. It automatically puts in a bunch of points all around that enclosure, and then you select the "fill" circle, and choose the color. Phew!
@LauraCoyle2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes! you figured it out. In Illustrator, you create filled shapes by drawing with shape tools or by using the pen tool, pencil tool to draw a path and close it, by finishing at the starting point. Then, choose the stroke and fill settings for that shape. The bucket on the desktop is the Live Paint feature which does not exist on the iPad.

For the Pen tool on the iPad it's like the desktop version, you either grab another tool to let go of the Pen, or you can use the touch shortcut. Just touch the center ring and then tap with your stylus/finger in an empty space to stop the line drawing. Release the touch shortcut and you are back to the Pen tool.

This is a great tutorial Laura, thanks so much! One problem I’m having is that if I am drawing smaller icons with the pencil tool, the start and end points connect. Definitely zoom in, so the distance between your endpoints is faster apart as you are closing shapes. I have not seen that functionality in this version of Illustrator on the iPad - I know what you are talking about though. I actually came here looking for this also. I'm a regular desktop Illustrator user and have come to rely on both the "Smooth Tool" and the option you're talking about which is called "Edit Selected Paths" in the pencil tool's options (double click the pencil tool to turn it on/off). It's unfortunate that the iPad version doesn't have either of these, because they save me so much time. Hopefully they will add them in a future version. You can put in a feature request for these on Adobe's site. Laura, this is a really helpful video, thank you for sharing it!

Yes, tap the 2 circles on the left hand side of the app under the tools to choose the stroke color and the fill color for any path you have selected. The red slash means none. Been busy lately, can't wait to get back to making more of these videos - you ask a good question!

For the shaded edges of the ground and the sun: Is there an easier way than duplicating the object and create the edge out of the copy? If I want change the shape then, I have to change it for both main object and edge object. This happens quite often and is driving me crazy.
@LauraCoyle3 жыл бұрын
You could make the shadow object larger than the ground object and then use a copy of the ground object (placed on top) to make a clipping mask. That way, when you change the ground object, you would have to re-clip but you wouldn't have to change the shadow (if you made it large enough).
@ddi7i4d3 жыл бұрын
@@LauraCoyle Thanks for the answer! - But I finally found a much easier way, which I think is even intended. When you use an object as a clipping path, its fill and stroke are being deleted, but you can select it in the layer panel and give them their stroke and fill back! The easiest way to do this is copy the appearance before you create the layer mask, and then paste it back to the mask shape when you are done.
@LauraCoyle3 жыл бұрын
@@ddi7i4d I like the way you think! So yes this is kind of a ninja move you describe :-) You can compare this to Draw Inside mode on the desktop. Which is a feature that I've always thought kind of "breaks the rules" of Clipping masks, which is to have the masking shape on top. With Draw Inside, objects you draw in the mask stack up above the masking shape. The drawback is that on the artboard, you can't select the object on the solid fill of the masking shape, only by the path/edge of the mask shape - or by the mask contents. This has always frustrated me on the desktop, having to think how I have to select some things differently than others when I have a lot of objects in my art. At least on the iPad though, you have that common actions menu with the crosshair icon, you can click that to move the clip group around. I already use that all the time. I might start working your clip mask tip into my iPad work - thanks for the idea!

I like the idea of adobe on the iPad except I have not been able to find a video on connecting points. @LauraCoyle3 жыл бұрын
@@esmeraldaleal4911 To connect 2 existing end points it seems to be really tricky (depending on the points) because it's difficult to align them perfectly one on top of the other. Use Smart Guides to get as close as you can, dragging one over to the other, then you can marquee select the 2 endpoints with direct selection tool and use the Join command in the common actions bar (also in Path menu). If you wind up with tiny extra path segment between the 2 endpoints, select one and use Smart Delete - you have to zoom in and then sometimes convert the final point from corner to smooth, etc. not as simple as I'd like. Not in the app, but you can access your CC Libraries in the app. You can add Image traced/expanded objects to a library on the desktop, then go to the Image button in the menu on the left side of the iPad app, choose Libraries and get it there. Same thing with the Capture mobile app, you can add those "shapes" to a library and get them inside Illustrator on the iPad.

In your opinion, is it better to use illustrator from the computer or on ipad to create characters?
@LauraCoyle2 жыл бұрын
It depends on which tools you are using. If you are drawing with the Pencil tool, Blob brush, or Paintbrush, I think it's easier to draw on an iPad. If you are using the Pen tool, it's easier to use that with a mouse and desktop. I work back and forth between them, depending on what part of my project I'm working on. There are many more tools and features available on the desktop.

Is it possible to do some free form drawing? For some reason when I draw if I try to connect two things together it does this weird thing and starts erasing the other line ... I also am sometimes not able to erase things .. I’ll erase something and then it’ll come straight back or it’ll come back as an even weirder shape?
@LauraCoyle3 жыл бұрын
I can't picture the first problem you are having, but not being able to erase things with the eraser, I understand. This is the way paths (lines) work in Illustrator. To remove part of a path you have to cut it. Draw a squiggly line with the pencil tool, then get the Direct Selection tool, select an anchor point where you want to cut, and tap the scissor icon on the left of the common actions menu. This would be a great topic for a video - I'll add it to my list. If you try using the eraser, it closes the path, and can make more shapes. Eraser is better with closed shapes. @@Bullriich Oh silly me! I didn't understand. Yes, it's vector, and welcome to Illustrator!! All Illustrator's drawing tools create vector paths with anchor points. The Pencil tool automatically places the points along the path as you draw the line, and the Pen lets you click and place the points where you want them.

Can I convert an image into an .ai file?
@LauraCoyle2 жыл бұрын
You can place an image in an Illustrator document. Then, you can select it with the black arrow and choose the vectorize option on the left of the common actions bar. This traces the image, creating vector paths. To access the paths for editing tap Expand at the bottom of the properties panel.

Why would you ever use a pen tool if you have an iPad, Apple Pencil, and the pencil tool in Illustrator? Learning how to use the pen tool is a pain.
@LauraCoyle3 жыл бұрын
The Pen tool takes time to get the hang of, but it does some things the Pencil doesn't do precisely. But I agree that the Pencil tool + iPad and Apple Pencil goes a long way! 😎

@@LauraCoyle Thanks Laura for responding. I was frustrated with the pen tool at the time. I've cooled down and see that the pen tool is indeed more precise than the pencil tool.
