John and his twin sister, Michelle, were adopted by Joe and Bridie Kiely and grew up in Kilrush, Co. Clare. At the age of 40 and after a serious work accident, John wanted to find their natural mother. Going through the official channels was a long and frustrating route, so he decided to take matters into his own hands.

I’ve just come across this in 2024 and want to highly commend John for his thoughtful and considered approach towards finding his roots. I’m so sorry for the loss of your birth mother before you could meet her, but so happy that you managed to find your brothers. Having Susi at your side throughout your journey to support you was nothing short of a gift.

I am a closed adoptee. never will I get over the loss I have endured. never knowing any of my family. never having my mother or father or siblings or grandparents or cousins in my life, having to pretend I was someone I was not, having someone else's family stories, having someone else's family tree. The whole system of closed adoption was awful , cruel and actually criminal.

I don't think anyone needs a DNA test - the two brothers looked like twins, and I'm sure that must have informed the immediate acceptance of him as their brother. I do think DNA could be of use to locate a father though. How lucky he and his sister were with their adoptive parents, they both seem really lovely people. It's very sad that he didn't get to meet his birth mother, but maybe he can find his father, and learn about his mother through his brothers. It would be wonderful to see a follow up film, once you have been invited into someone's life like this, it's hard to let go again!

There is no mistaking that they are brothers! I think it's a terrible shame that some adoption laws are still so antiquated. To go through all that searching alone, for years, and then find your birth parent(s) died must be heartbreaking. If they'd been given the information and helped along the way, John may have been able to meet his birth mother before she died. It is now 2019 and I'm hoping that since this was filmed, Ireland has relaxed its adoption laws and now lets families search for each other. I think it is a basic human right for people to know where they came from, to know who gave birth to them.

Agree. But unfortunately some mothers pay a fee to block them from finding them. They can in my country anyway. Perhaps that rule has changed, cause it was about 20 yrs ago. When my ex went searching for his mother. He heard about the block. He didn't want to go any further in the search. Incase she had placed a block on her info. It would have been too crushing for him to find that out.

Thank you so much for sharing this, I'm on the other end of the Irish Adoption Agency who refuse to listen, see sense or understand an Irishwoman's Human Rights. I'm trapped with my adopted son who is stateless and the IAA are heartless as we're stuck here in West Africa as my son doesn't have a nationality, a citizenship so we can move. The IAA don't understand that the Hague Convention is there for a guideline, they don't understand that if you follow the law abroad, you cannot change it. I have done my best but they're driving my son & I to a very difficult situation. So glad you found your siblings!

I hope the twins took DNA ancestry tests, to confirm their relationship with the 3 brothers, & to see if they could match other relatives, like the father's family. DNA testing is proving pivotal in finding family, especially when one hits a brick wall with documentation, or access to it by law.

@@RLScheurman I've seen the most heartbreaking documentaries about those bloody irish nuns. Vultures; they made money off of selling babies and they've never been held criminally responsible. I hope you find a way to be more at peace; perhaps counselling because you ARE a victim. Try using a DNA kit. 2 months ago a long lost baby was brought home to our family after 6 decades. My cousin, and it's a joy for the entire family to have him with us. Please don't give up.

Very rare the father was recorded on the birth certificate of unwed mother’s. Most young ladies gave birth in mother babie homes and it just wasn’t done. Unless the biological mother told or left a letter with adoption agency. Adopted kids just couldn’t trace their fathers. Now through dna times are changing.”long lost families UK” investigated a lot of adoptees threw mother babie homes and every now and then also found the father listed or were told by family who the dad was. Sad really.

Adoption in some respects continue practices that had reasons for from long ago but the way the world has come to change there is so much more that if the conditions exists hindrances could be for those that seek better knowledge be let to know what they seek instead of having to prod along for chances. And if in those relationships there are people that do not want to seek information then the paperwork should reflect that so that people are not disappointed. Maybe, someday.
