Expose for your highlights when in the bright sun so you can recover in POST if needed, what a solid piece of advice from a solid photographer like Mr Hoey who invites the same models through his long career and manages to deliver consistent good results with his photos..I guess long term relationships are returning back the fruits of the labor

It's amazing how much detail gets retained in shadows you might think are too dark whereas if the highlights are overexposed, it's just gone. I liked the full sun photos as well, it's a very natural feel especially with keeping the sunglasses on. Here in Australia we have a lot of sun but I love shooting portraits in the woods with plenty of natural shade that can be used. Always good to have some tips on how to deal with bright sun though as sometimes it's beyond our control and you have to get on with the job. Thanks Gavin

Thanks for the tips. I live in the high desert of New Mexico, USA and have been forced to do two graduation shoots this past weekend in full sun between 12-3 pm. I tried to find shade but it wasn’t always possible and many photos came out with more contrast and bright spots than I’d like. I’ll try some of these tricks and see if I can improve my final shots. Thanks for putting out the great content.

Hi Gavin, great video. White balance in colorful areas, Let’s say you’re shooting in a lavender field, or a golf course, how do you keep correct white balance for the model without affecting the environment? The same question how do partial shade affects the subject’s color. Is it possible to do in camera and not with masks in post?

what size of softbox do you feel most comfortable taking outdoors? will an umbrella work as well?
@GavinHoey2 жыл бұрын
For my work I'm happy with a softbox that's around 70cm (28 inches) for location work. But that's just me. What YOU need is down to many factors, so take what you need not what someone else uses 😉

Living in Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹 these are the conditions in which I do 90% of my work. Today I learned to how the sun can be your hair light. Question!!! Gavin, what are your thoughts on music during a photo shoot? Could make for a good topic next video.
@GavinHoey2 жыл бұрын
Hi Marcus. For me music is 100% essential for a photoshoot except in one case... if it's being filmed for KZbin. Copyright, editing and audio means we HAVE to film without music... it's weird!

Hello :) Nice tutorial. Please make video about using flash with softbox, umbrella and beautidish, when you are outdoor after sun went to sleep (dark background, light up model in front).
@nuffzed20012 жыл бұрын
@gavin the first setup, what about an nd filter for the background with the sun?
@GavinHoey2 жыл бұрын
An ND filter reduces all light (shadows and highlights) equally, so not a lot of help there. A graduated ND may have helped but the irregular shape of the highlight area wouldn't be ideal. Multiple exposure blending (HDR) is probably the most practical solution if flash isn't an option.

Expose for the highlights while maintaining details in the highlights
@ke4uyp2 жыл бұрын
One additional setup that can achieve the same look as the final photos in the video. Instead of shooting high speed sync simply use a ND filter that's four f stops down. This will give you a sink speed of 250th of a second You're still shooting at f 1.4 ISO64 and even the flash is still at 1/8 power You make up for the exposure difference using the slower shutter speed.
@love2cycle22 жыл бұрын

Did you use your colorchecker for both shade and direct sun or just once on location? Thanks.
@GavinHoey2 жыл бұрын
For total accuracy you'd use the colourchecker in full sun, in the shade, in the shade cast by the tree, in the shade from the diffuser but honestly I just went with the flash and ambient light mix.
