Before I watch this I would like to thank Gavin and his crew for making this. I am sat at home having been told to stay at home from work today due to the storm "Ciaran" I live in Guernsey one of the Channel Islands right in the eye of the storm in the English Channel. We are safe but the Island has seen a lot of damage and so has our sister Island of Jersey :( So to be able to watch this and maybe a few of Gavin's other videos will make the day seem that little bit bet better. So thank you again Gavin and all the people at Adorama who make this youtube channel what it is.

Hi Peter. Thanks for the comment. I've been watching the mess Ciaran made in the Channel Islands, I'm just the other side of the channel and yet storm Ciaran seems to have missed us. Stay safe and keep watching... glad you still have power (memoires of 1987 linger!)

@@GavinHoey winds have died down and now its just none stop rain :( Ah yes 87 who will forget that one. Lucky this time we knew it was coming for days not like back then when Michael Fish said we had nothing to worry about ;) One of the good thngs over here is we have undergound power cables so no real problems with high winds on that front :)

I have no desire to work with a model in a studio, except when I'm watching one of Gavin's videos. Then it looks like a lot of fun. :) I'm shopping for a small retirement home this year, and while it's not a top priority, I keep an eye out for places that might have room for home studio. I'm handy with the DIY, and a small studio could be a fun project to build and use.

Just bought one of these (Godox)to start with... Will use a ND2-8 to help with the lack of ability to reduce power beyond 1/32. Also got a Godox XPro (Oly) trigger and 85cm Para softbox with grid, and will slowly build; realistically i won't need anything beyond this budget gear. Thanks for sharing and helping me with my decision.

Thanks for sharing. I have not seen almost anyone except you using the olympus om1 for portraits, almost 100% of the videos are dedicated to nature and animals, and maybe some to sports, it is with this when you really realize that it is not the camera but the photographer and his good know-how when it comes to capturing what he wants in a photograph. Have you ever thought about changing cameras to the "big brands" like Sony, Canon, Nikon that apparently are more focused on this type of work? Thank you again, it is a pleasure to see the videos you make.
@GavinHoey
@GavinHoey Жыл бұрын
As much as possible I try to keep these videos focused on lighting rather then cameras. The OM-1 is a lovely studio camera, backed up with a range of high quality portrait lenses (such as the M.Zuiko f/1.2 Pro range). You're right that OM SYSTEM's marketing has swung towards nature in recent years, for valid reasons but as you say, a photographer isn't defined by the band name on their camera 😉

@Stasiek_Zabojca
@Stasiek_Zabojca Жыл бұрын
Almost no one* 😉 One of the biggest issues with micro 4/3 is noise at higher ISO and I guess AF systems and other functions are not as advanced. However, in studio you don't really need higher ISO thanks to flash and you don't need that good AF (because most scenes are not as dynamic and you usually use higher aperture walues, so depth of field is way wider and AF does not have to be as accurate). But camera is small, light and I think that lenses are way cheaper than full frame.

I have heard some smoke will leave a film on the furniture etc and some smoke may make it hard for certain people to breathe some smoke is water based and some is oil base. Thanks in advance.
@GavinHoey
@GavinHoey Жыл бұрын
Maybe oil based smoke is/was a thing but I've never seen it. The water based fluids from reputable brands (such as the ones Adorama carry) leave no residue and are safe to breath (always check no one has any breathing issues before use of course). Not being able to turn them lower than 1/32th power is a serious limitation. I would try to buy only one or two flashes to start with, with a wider range of outputs. And better lightstands than those. I think that you would end up regretting buying these things really fast and selling them, which in the end would be more expensive that buying some correct stuff from the start.

You'll probably find the flash duration specs on the Adorama store page for the Blaz300 head. I suspect the flash technology used here isn't the kind that has super short flash durations, so my guess is the EVOLV 200 is a better choice.
