I should point out these are my run and gun video settings on the Nikon D750. Ideally to achieve an optimal cinematic look, I’d shoot in M (manual) mode and aim at 1/60th shutter speed, F2 aperture and a low ISO. Depending on the light, you would probably have to add a variable ND filter to stop over exposing with these settings.

I've had my D750 for 6 years now, it's the perfect camera for landscape photography. I often use it with my old manual focus lenses and it does an awesome job. Love the photos with the 28mm f/2.8 AIS. If you're not in a hurry to take that photo, take a look at trying some classic lenses. Thank you for your wonderful video!

Totally agree. Old prime lenses are just amazing. I use my 55mm f2.8 A1s Micro-Nikkor a lot with brilliant results. Autofocus isn't essential in Macro situations. I am an age where autofocus was once a distant dream. Manual focus keeps your talent in check.

I own 2 D750s and love them both. I just wish the AF was quicker in acquisition for moving subjects. I used the D700 for 10 years and never missed an action shot, but since I have gone to the D750 a number of years ago, I certainly have fewer keepers. With the D700 I was hitting 95-98% with the D750 my hit rate with the same lenses in similar scenarios is about 80%. :(

@@adrianalfordphotography Hi Adrian, it's a bit of both but to be honest, i've only been experimenting using the 18-55mm kit lens which is making me lose my will to live a bit as it just doesnt seem to be producing anything that's a bit punchy without a fair old bit of post! Dead keen to invest in the lens and maybe a little lighting setup, as my office has the D750 gathering dust on a shelf.
@adrianalfordphotography
@adrianalfordphotography 2 жыл бұрын
For the white balance issue their should be a "flouro" icon that you can switch to. Alternatively you can adjust white balance manually to something like 3000 kelvin. Yes, the kit lens is for very basic photography not much else. A 50mm F1.8G lens should be relatively cheap and there should be some good ones second hand if you can't afford new. I picked up mine cheap here in Australia second hand (practically new) for $150AUD (equivalent to $100USD). You can also buy lighting set ups very cheaply off ebay new. My home studio lighting kit cost me about $200 total.

I recently bought a used D750 with the 50mm 1.8G to replace my ancient D80. It's a spectacular improvement in all respects but that video AF is an unexpected major disappointment, and I wish I had researched that aspect better. Unfortunately, it's just a hobby and I have not yet figured out what I exactly want to do with... so I just cannot justify spending the money to upgrade to the D780, which I understand, has video AF that's comparable to what the competition has been offering for years. Your video gives me hope that it's possible to get some great footage out of it and this purchase was worth it :)

Hi Adrian, I have a D750 and like it. Very good for sports. I have never really tried to do anything video wise and consider myself a complete novice. I want to make a recording of a band playing at a pub. If you could give me some basic pointers, it would be much appreciated. I will be using a Sigma 24-70 lens. So given we are in a low light situation, and I need to record for about 80-90 mins to get the entire show. What settings do you suggest , how big of a SD card do I need? How many batteries? Also, I assume I need an external mic as well. Is there anything I need to know with the mic settings? Cheers Don
@adrianalfordphotography
@adrianalfordphotography 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Don thanks for watching. I'd say 2 batteries should work. The D750 can only record 20 mins max video clips. So you will have to stop and restart a new clip, (best between songs near that time limit) Set yourself up on a tripod where you won't get bumped into by people. Use something like a Rode VideoMicro Mic, set audio to manual and get a level when band are doing sound test so it doesn't distort. You can also do this for the vision side of things. Go to M (manual) set aperture to low number for low light, F4 for example, adjust ISO when band or roadies are set up and doing full lighting check. 64GB SD card should do it. Cheers.

@adrianalfordphotography
@adrianalfordphotography 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. I can say whatever you do, do not rely on the autofocus on the D750. Make sure you use back button autofocus, prefocus your shot, then go into record as I did in this video, making sure your subject does not wander too far away or closer to the camera or they go out of focus. Use an aperture of say around F4 to F8, that should help a little with depth of field giving your bigger focus depth and less chance of something going out of focus. If you don't intend to use slow motion for shots, then 1920 x 1080 @ 24/25FPS is sufficient and gives you longer clip record times than 60FPS. Lastly, have fun, very important.

hi Adrian. So I understand that when shooting 24/25 fps you want to double the shutter speed for a "natural look"Would the same be true when shooting 60fps for slo mo? wouldn't we want to shoot at 120 shutter speed...or maybe its best to stay at 50/60th a second like you said in description, or maybe it makes no difference once you adjust things in post. Hope that makes sense thanks for the vid
@adrianalfordphotography

Hi Max - I shot at 60fps and in my Premiere project I was at 25fps. Interpreting the footage at 25fps gives me a smidge over 2 times slow motion and that filmic look I know what you're saying about the 50/60fps project. If you shot at 100/120fps the same rule would apply.

Nikon now has the Z6II camera which has much improved focus in photo and video modes, but there are cameras from Sony and Canon that are even better. Hope this helps you 🙏

@@adrianalfordphotography thank you so much Adrian for your reply. I really appreciated it. From this KZbin video I saw you were shooting a person when walking. May I know what mode and focus you use if I do not want to have the camera continuously refocus the subject like yours ? But your videos look awesome and I wish to create short clip like yours. Thank you 😊

Hi Valerie - I assigned Single Point auto focus to the back AE-L/AF-L button. By doing this you can leave your lens in autofocus and you don't have to switch it to manual. I prefocus my shot on the person or subject by hitting the AE-L/AF-L button, then go into record (as I did in this video) then followed my subject keeping the same distance behind her while walking. If you watch this other video I did, it'll show you how to set up the back button focus I just explained, but keep in mind I use Group Area Focus in this video instead you can just use Single Point Autofocus - hope this helps kzbin.info/www/bejne/bn7bnKKprcmHbLs

Great informative video. I have my D750 running alongside my D4s. My question is. Sometimes I forget to return the mode switch back to Camera when taking stills after video. Will this affect the quality of my still shot? Thanks

Thanks for this! Sorry to clarify, did you say that the D750 doesn’t autofocus from one subject to next in one clip unlike to a Sont a7iii? I have the D750 and I’ve been trying to figure out the video function.
@adrianalfordphotography
@adrianalfordphotography 3 жыл бұрын
Yes that is right. The autofocus function is very hit and miss and clunky. I only use video in manual focus mode. In other words, focus on my subject, then start recording.

Thanks for an interesting and helpful video! I had tried something along those lines with the d750 during lockdown last year, and it hadn't crossed my mind that adding letterboxing would make it more cinematic, thanks for that! Also, I was using openshot, which is open and libre, however going straight to a 25fps meant that it was skipping a frame every now and then, what with the original frame rate being 59.94fps out of camera. Changing to 24.97 solved this issue. Is 25fps in Premiere Pro smooth from the start? Thanks again!

Great video! Your edits are really good, and you are so naturally good at talking to the camera! Your voice is so “professional”, you should work on tv 📺😁! Maybe you could recommend a vlogging camera for me? I’ve only been using the GoPro 7, and DJI mavic 2 pro, but I’m looking for a camera with flip screen and that shoots 4 K without cropping, and that has great autofocus! And that works good in low light, that is a real challenge 🤔AND of course one that I don’t have to sell my car to afford 😅💸 It’s is sooo many on the market and I don’t know how to choose! Greetings, 🙋🏼‍♀️&🐺, 🇳🇴

Thank you so much for your kind words. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch my video. I use the GoPro Hero 7 too and it's great for vlogging. As for another 4K camera with a flip screen that won't break the bank, that's a tough one. Canons always have good video auto focus, as do Sony and Panasonic. The closest thing I could see to not breaking the bank with a flip screen is the Canon M50, but I think it does crop the 4K which is the only downside I can see? Sony A73 would be good, but has no flip screen and I think the Panasonics may a bit expensive. Maybe also look at the new(ish) Canon 200D Mark II. Hope this helps, cheers.
@greenperspective4843

@@adrianalfordphotography The canon M50 is actually the one I was leaning towards, the only downside I could see was the cropping in 4K, but I guess for that price it's the best you can get now! I couldn't find any that didn't crop that had all the oter qualities, without a drastic step up price wise! Thanks a lot for your advice, really appreciate it! Looking forward to your next video 😃🙏🏻

Start off standing still together. Get your focus point on back of head (manual). Go into record, then take off together at same time. Walk slowly, keep elbows tucked into rib cage holding camera steady as you gp. Kind of walk like a ninja, heel toe, heel toe.

@adrianalfordphotography
@adrianalfordphotography 2 жыл бұрын
Tough call. It depends on your budget. If money is tight, get a D750. If you can afford it, go for a Z6II. The D750 is awesome for stills, but the autofocus in video is ordinary. The Z6II has good stills and video. You have a bigger range of lenses you can buy for the D750 over the Z6II. Like I said tough call.

That's so weird? That's the first time I've heard that happening on a D750. If it overheats, just let it sit in some shade or inside somewhere and let it cool down while turned off by itself. Best not to put in fridge. It definitely sounds like there's a technical issue inside the camera that only a repairer could fix though. If your budget allows, I guess you could trade for a cheap Z6 with FTZ adaptor or Z6ii?

You are completely 100% incorrect. The D750 can use ANY F mount lens for video, a lens does not HAVE to have image stabilisation just for video. Why would you need stabilisation on a tripod for example!
