Contributing factors for acne in adulthood: 1. Fluctuation in hormones (women) 2. Stress 3. Pollens, pollutants, personal care products (avoid fragrance) 4. Overly aggressive skincare practices (mechanical exfoliants, scrubbing, chemical exfoliants) 5. Over washing your face 6. Diet - avoid skim milk, whey protein supplements, high levels of b12/biotin/iodine

Yes she has beautiful skin. I wish i have too :( i broke out a week after my wedding at 23 years old, now i am turning 30 this june still have acne, i have deep pimples that stay more than a month. I try to pop them and its hard and painful, ihave extracted one and know i fell my cheek rested..and yes i use makeup to.cover it :(

msconfesor sounds like cystic acne. Definitely don’t try popping those. Those deep cystic acne definitely leave scars more easily the longer you have them. Their so hard to get rid of too. When my son was a baby he had cystic acne. His poor little face is still scared to this day and he’s 13 now. We kept getting wrong diagnosis until dermatologist said it’s rare but he had a adult form of acne. We finally got prescription that got rid of it. But definitely look into your hormones bc can help or spironolactone or just face meds and a antibiotic for awhile.

I never had any major problems with acne as a teenager, but my skin freaked out big time in my mid-twenties. Once I left my ex and the toxic relationship of 4 years, everything started clearing up... It's been 10 months and my skin looks amazing.

I'm so glad you got out of that relationship - you deserve better. I'm so glad I've been single for most of my 20s, because that was not a good time self-respect wise for me. I'm pretty sure the stress of low self-esteem, and staying in situations that weren't healthy for me, caused my acne to get worse during that time. It's better now, and I've been in therapy for a few years.

It’s so unfortunate how skincare companies have warped our view. 16 years old, I started breaking out - for the next 15 years I washed my face 2x a day, used astringent, toners, frangances, went to product to product (SA, BP, tea tree) with only minor difference to my acne. At 31, I read Beyond Soap and found this channel, then did what was said - gentle cleanser, fragrance free moisturizer, sunscreen, once a day - and my face is much better. I still have acne but I’m so glad to know my skin was breaking out partly because how aggressive I’ve been to it.

My skin was flawless before but my skin broke out badly this year. People would either asked "what happen to ur face" or look at your face with a skeptical look. I recently made up my mind not to care about what other people say/do and only give times for my skin to heal. But it hurts me so much when my own family members made my mindset crumpled when they look at my face thru video call. All it takes for my insecurities to soar high was one sentence "your acnes look like chickenpox". I turn off the video call and cried until now.

Just want to let you know that you're beautiful. Almost everyone has some kind of acne in their life we are all human. And your acne/breakouts are not your fault, you are a good person who is trying her best to look after herself. I think you're awesome.

I’ve had teenage acne, pretty severe, on my face, chest and back. Needless to say, my teen years and early adulthood were hell from a self-esteem stand point. Mid 20s-accutaine, which helped a ton but my acne came back, although not as bad as before. Two kids later and I’m still breaking out. Birth control pills always helped but never cleared my skin up completely. Finally, in my mid-30s I read about spironolactone and talked to my OBGYN about it (because I still broke out on my face, back and chest even in my mid 30s). Got a prescription and a miracle happened only 2 weeks after I started taking the drug. My skin was 100% clear! Not even a period pimple. I know everyone is different but for many women (this is not a treatment that’s prescribed for men) this is the only thing that worked. I wish I had learned about it sooner. Oh, and yes, totally had flare ups when trying biotin!

I had acne from 13 years of age. I tried Antibiotics; topical creams; I even had infra red treatment. These treatments worked on and off but nothing fantastic. It wasn’t a full face of acne but I had a spot always. I never had a face without a spot, sometimes I would break out and have lots of spots. They were cystic and took ages to go away and always left a red mark. My skin was good when I was pregnant though and so finally after my daughter was born when I was 36 Years old I went to a dermatologist. He said he would put me on the drug that was one step down from the “big guns” which was Accutane. He put me on spiroloctane and almost immediately my skin cleared up. It looked and felt amazing. I was on a high dose to begin with 200 mg but then went down to 100mg and I had no side effects at all apart from beautiful clear skin. I was on it for years. When I came off it I got the odd spot but never as bad but I was 46 years old by then. Lifesaver for me because spots can really get you down and really knock your elf esteem.

I'm sorry to hear that, have you thought maybe acne also affects our self esteem and they way we carry ourselves, confident people attract others but it's difficult to stay confident when we're constantly breaking out... just a thought, I think a lot of people nowadays have suffered at some point with acne, and we tend to be understanding about the condition and know that personal care rarely has something to do with acne skin.

Dr. Dray, thank you. I had been "burned" by several dermatologists that just didn't take my adult, hormonal acne seriously. It was like here, have a little tretinoin and some benz peroxide. But those weren't cutting it. I finally went to another one in town with fingers crossed and knowledge from you of things like spironolactone and the need to also heal PIE. She listened and validated that yes, my acne is manageable. I almost cried with relief. Thank you for all your informative, thoughtful and even silly content. You are a gem!

EVERY single time I end up seeing a dermatologist, I am advised to exfoliate and use products that simply DRY the skin. It drives me crazy. I always try to explain that these drying ...potions just irritate my skin and make the acne worse, increase oil production as a reaction, but I am looked at as a non-compliant/difficult patient. So I have to look for DIY solutions.

@@ccap3211 salicylic acid. where I live (in EU) the over the counter creams and face washer do not contain (you can not get!) benzyol preoxide. For a bad breakout that happens once every few months, that is the only thing that works for me. The BP kills the bacteria, the SA doesn't. It just dries my skin further, causes a lot of redness and makes the acne (actually white-head attack..) only worse. The only consistent advice I got from a dermatologist was to make sure that the oil production is reduced, = the skin is dried out... But the salicylic acid does not go deep into the skin. The other option offered is a high concentration of vit A creams - again: exfoliants.

I'm 47: had acne beginning at age 11 thru my whole life. I've done or tried everything you list in this video. Differin helped, Tretinoin helped more, but my at home LED light therapy mask has cleared my acne completely. For the first time in my life about 7 months ago I got several painful cystic acnes along my chin, upper lip, forehead and jawline after a breakup. I thought I was going to have to go in and see my Derm for extractions. I heard about LED light therapy researching something else and after a good deal of research, I ordered a device. 3 weeks with the light therapy mask (Blue & Red light 30 mins/day 4 days a week) and there was no sign of any acne on my face. I maintain almost perfect skin now 2-3 x's a week and it's one of the most relaxing and effective therapies I've ever used.

Coincidentally I'm at home on quite strong antibiotics because I was diagnosed with cellulitis following my face swelling up when I got a rather nasty patch of acne on my chin and the GP was worried about the infection's proximity to my brain. I'm 41 and have never had skin this bad; large cysts that take months to go away, small infected patches of acne, but otherwise pretty clear skin everywhere else. It totally boggles my mind, and the irony is that while it's been suggested that the enormous life stresses I'm under contribute to it, knowing that cellulitis is now something to fear, along with the risk of things like sepsis, is certainly not helping my anxiety levels. :( I hope I find some sort of solution soon!

Using your recommendations finally fixed my skin. If I treated the acne, my skin was irritated, dry, painful, and red. If I didn’t, my face was covered in acne. Now my skin is comfortable, moisturized, and 98% clear (I still get one or two pimples, but totally tolerable). Mixing retinoids with high moisture and gentle cleansing (Vanicream face wash and cream) did the trick. Your moisturizer on wet face tip made the biggest difference in my skin. Plus sunscreen of course! My skin is beautiful now. Thank you! 🙏

For years I was stuck seeing military doctor on base that wouldn’t refer me to a dermatologist. Instead they just prescribed me about every harsh product you can think of, gave me zero instructions, and dumped many of the products on me at once (that shouldn’t of been used together). I found your videos awhile ago and they’ve REALLY helped!! I learned how to use the products correctly and what to ovoid. I moved back stateside & had an insurance change that allowed me to see a dermatologist without a referral. A 15 min appointment with a dermatologist completely changed everything. I wasn’t prescribed a lot of harsh topicals, which was amazing because that’s what I was afraid of! Turns out I needed spironolactone, my chin cystic acne completely cleared with in two months. Seriously recommend seeing a dermatologist if you have chronic issues with acne. So thankful for your videos!

Thanks to your recommendations, my face is clearer. Fragrance free cleanser, Cerave cream or the Skin Renewing night cream, Differin and Zapzyt Benzoyl Peroxide acne gel. Because of the Differin and BP, using Aquaphor has helped with dryness caused by those two. Also, when my skin is a bit dryer I tend to use Aveeno Baby Eczema Therapy Cream.

I was never able to use salicylic acid because every time I used it, it would cause so much redness and irritation; it almost seemed liked hives. I always thought I was allergic to this. I remember trying over the counter and proactive products. I then saw your thoughts on Zapzyt and it seems promising because it’s suitable for sensitive skin. I liked that the product has chamomile, aloe Vera, fragrance and alcohol free. I decided to try the Zapzyt cleanser and I love it! This is the only salicylic acid product that doesn’t irritate my skin. I love how my skin is starting to look. I had tried panoxyl, it had a lower concentration of benzoyl peroxide, but my skin could never tolerate it because it was too drying. I also use the Dermtlgy sunscreen and my skin glows. It looks clean and healthy! Thank you Dr Dray for making these informative videos!!!

Thanks for this video. I’ve had acne since I was 19 and now I’m 26. Until I stumbled upon your channel a few months ago, I used products like clean and clear face wash and body washes with fragrance. I never really thought I was sensitive to fragrance until I decided to use some simple products that you recommended. I use Aveeno moisturizer with sunscreen, Cerave PM, moisturizer (my favorite!), and Aveeno fragrance free face wash. All of that has made a really big difference in my skin in just a couple months. I’ve had a lot less acne and redness, and the zits I get aren’t too bad. I always thought you had to dry out zits with toners and things, but moisturizing more (and with great ingredients) has helped more than anything else so far.

Shay im actually using a salicylic acid face wash right now, but my concern is the acne and while I know salicylic acid is good for acne I’ve heard benzoyl peroxide is better, the only downside being that it can bleach my beard and can damage it which I’m not a fan of so I don’t know if I should give benzoyl peroxide a try or keep using salicylic acid. I also heard about Retinols (I think that’s what they’re called) but not sure about them either. I’m hoping Dr dray could clear some things up (oh and sorry for my essay/rant lol)

I’ve had consistent acne since I was 11 years old. I am now 52 and I have to take spironolactone 25 MG twice a day, every day. I have tried to go without prescriptions to no avail. My acne has always been very cystic- deep and large, that takes a long, long time to heal. When you deal with it for this long, you come to accept it as just part of your life. But I have scars that have now gone linear as gravity and loss of volume are also taking its toll on my face. Still… A part of me just wants to know...why?

I do recommend spot treating with Differin gel. After washing my skin in the morning, I apply Paula's Choice tinted SPF. It contains Zinc which has made a big difference in oil production. Don't put it around the eye area because it is too dry. Next I put a layer of tinted SPF moisturizer by DRMTLGY. Some days that I want to look really nice, I will put No 7 foundation make up as a top layer. My acne has been controlled well without breakouts using this routine. Although I have stayed away from peanuts and I dont drink milk. Internally I feel this has helped tremendously.

I never had acne as a teenager, and I've had problems with atopic dermatitis since I was 13-14 years old. My overall skin health was great in my late teens up until this summer, maybe due to me skipping fragrance and other irritating ingredients in skin care. This June I started having acne on my chin and neck, at 22 years old. I didn't think it could happen to me, and I really didn't know how to treat it. So I'm very grateful for your videos, they've certainly helped me trying to find good products over the counter. Unfortunately it hasn't worked, so I've been on antibiotics and epiduo for the past 3 weeks. Hopefully it will help me out. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge!

My acne started at 12 and didn’t stop until I spent 15 years (between the ages of 35 and 50) on high estrogen birth control patches. I lived a “normal” life during those years-not having to get up 2 hours early to apply makeup, not having to avoid swimming, not having to get up and apply makeup before my partner woke up, not missing work/social events because my skin was so bad, etc. I am now 58, post menopausal and I am STILL breaking out. Yes I see a dermatologist and am currently on winlevi and tretinoin but my skin is still not completely clear like it was when I was on the birth control and I can still wake up with a zit like a fourteen year old. 😢😢😢😢
