I mean there’s a hell of a lot of science that could be talked about regarding surface tension, fluid dynamics, the molecular reasons why oil and water don’t mix. All things that could probably help you achieve better water marbling by actually understanding what’s going on and maybe introduce some girls to the idea that science helps you understand the world who wouldn’t otherwise. But instead they say some shit about gravity and use it to sell some plastic crap to children :p

I’m a chemist in a quality control laboratory and I also love makeup!! You can definitely be both. I think this toy is dumbing down “science” and not really teaching much.

But then again it's a toy for 6 year olds😂
@MM-tn5uk
@MM-tn5uk 4 жыл бұрын
Edwina Fulton but 6 year olds *want* to learn. Kids aren’t as stupid as adults tend to think. I remember being pretty disappointed in the toy offerings when i was a kid, especially after reading old kids books where they mention full chemistry sets and transistor radio kits as kids’ toys (for the 5-8yo age range). Kids toys have been significantly dumbed down, sometimes in the name of safety, and kids do want to do more and learn more, they just lack the life experience and knowledge to know what they’re missing :(

How about creating one that's not dumbed down? The non-dumbed down kit!

screwculture Exactly! And that is what makes kids lose their thirst for knowledge and curiosity because they think that those terrible products are, in fact, science.

@boredom411
@boredom411 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Cristine, thanks for "getting serious" at the end of this video. It is so important to talk about issues like this. I am a female physics PhD student that has a huge holo stash and regularly comes to work with blinged out nails. There are definitely people who take me less seriously because of it and it can be really tough. I make an effort to make sure they don't prevent me from being feminine when I want to, and I hope to show everyone that you can be a BAMF scientist and a holosexual. At a conference in March I presented my research with my nails decked out in super-bright Cherub by Superchic Lacquer partially to make a point (and partially because I love it). I am on the fence about the efficacy of these products. On the one hand, I totally agree with you - girls don't need girly or dumbed down science. On the other hand, I can see how these products might be a bridge for young kids who like nail polish to get interested in science. I think it might come down to the actual science content of the toy. There is definitely science involved in nail polish - what chemistry makes a quick dry top coat quick dry? Why do some colors water marble well and others not so much? How do suspension bases work? It might be a question of can questions like this be simplified to a level appropriate for the target age of the toy. I think if the toy really makes an effort to teach the science of nail polish, then that's pretty cool. However, if the toy is just like, "Look! Science for girls! ...it's nail polish!" and it is not on a (appropriately) sophisticated level, I have a hard time getting on board. I also feel like the feminizing of science in this way maybe implies that science is inherently masculine? I do not like that idea one bit! Anyway thanks again for bringing up this important issue! Kathryn PS Your job sounds really cool!

boredom411 Kathryn, I love what you said about products like these giving the impression that science is inherently masculine. That seems to reach to the core of the problem possibly even more than the lack of scientific information provided by the products. Also, it's so refreshing to see a KZbin comment with actual content and care. Cristine, I love how funny you are and I also loved seeing your thoughtful side just as much - I hope you consider doing another video like this again!

boredom411 I absolutely agree, I'm one of a large family and am the only girl (well, 22 now) that has pursued a scientific route and I have always had a science and engineering passion and am lucky enough to have not felt held back by the genders in science because of a supportive family and teachers nurturing my science interests. However, I have grown up to see the disproportionate amount of males to females in college/university level now I'm on a scientific degree. I hope if only one person who watches the end of the video, reads your comment or any other comments left by women in science are inspired and empowered to nurture their scientific passion! Women in science, UNITE! 👏👏

This moment when you said girls can like “girly stuff” and still do “smart stuff” made me kinda feel better ? I mean I often feel bad for loving make up and nail art a lot just because I want to get a job in the “smart and reserved to boys” section. I guess I always knew that but I acknowledged it with an actual people saying it. Kinda empowering, even if I was not expecting to hear this type of thing through a screen xD So, thank you for that

When I was a little girl my favorite "toy" was a kids microscope that came with glass slides, tools, liquid to keep the samples still and everything. I spent hours outside finding things I could put under my microscope. I'm just thankful I had parents who bought me both dolls and science related things without even asking, they just encouraged both in me. That's how it should be. There never has to be a distinction between "girl toy" and "science toy". They're all just toys.

I don't know, I think it's a good entry point for a lot of girls. It's less about teaching them how to _do_ science, and more about showing girls who think they're uninterested in science that there are aspects of science in things they already enjoy. The hope is that it will prompt girls to seek out the science in their other interests, and eventually become interested in science in and of itself. That's not what every girl needs, of course, but the stereotype came from somewhere, and that somewhere is: girls just aren't as drawn to science-for-science's-sake as boys. And that's fine! But it's important to find other ways to introduce science to girls, because they may be interested in more specific forms of science they wouldn't normally have a vehicle to discover.

I don't think making pretty patterns on my nails compares to making pretty neurological connections in my brain.

TAMEXPO I don't believe that's what she was saying. I think her intent was that it is slightly sexist to assume that the ONLY way to get girls, in particular, interested in science is too involve fashion and makeup and nails. That's just continuing the stereotype that girls only care about things that are considered frivolous.
@maramma4780

Renee's Reviews but you realise that MANY young girls genuinely enjoy makeup and nail art and what better way to boost their confidence than saying "Hey hey the thing you enjoy doing for fun is science you're so smart!!!!!" It may enforce stereotypes but to be frank the stereotypes are based on truth if they advertise science by using products young girls typically enjoy what's the harm?

Love your message at the end! Yes, this is totally capitalizing on the recent popularity in STEM toys by marketing stereotypical activities to girls and making it "scientific." I'm currently in college to be a middle school math teacher and feel very strongly about getting women and PoC into STEM, but this is just not it. It is a nail art toy that has been rebranded to be "science" and is frankly condescending to girls, as though they wouldn't know any better.

Justine H If the world saw women as equally intelligent, they wouldn't have just recently received equal rights in first world countries, and still be treated as lesser in others. I think wanting to get more women into science is fantastic, to give more women confidence in their ability and stand up to the leading men. It would also double the amount of talent in the fields, who wouldn't want that? How anyone could argue against someone wanting more female reprsentation and girls changing the world is beyond my understanding. It's so pure, there's nothing I can see wrong with such an idea.

Ok since Cristine got serious in this video I'll do the same and hope at least one young girl can read this. I was not the popular girl at school, I was a nerd, I liked science, reading and playing video games and I was terrible at sports. High school was not the best experience for me but guess what? It didn't last forever. I met cool people in college, including my current boyfriend, I travelled to many different countries, I got into weightlifting and now that I am 30 I am the web developer with the prettiest nails in the world xD What I mean with this is that life changes and you can't go around life trying to meet other kids/the media/celebrities/beauty gurus expectations. Use your time in school to have fun, go out, do girly things but also don't be afraid to explore those things you are passionate about. You like nail art? Maybe you can start a youtube channel and take a photography/Video editing course to learn how to take the best pictures for instagram. If you like computers you can take online courses about programming, many are for free. Check out websites like Udemy where you can learn about tons of different topics. Ask your teachers for guideance. Forget about stupid stereotypes about nerds and girly girls; real life is not black and white like that and you can do whatever you want. But please, make the most of your teenage years! Be happy, LEARN about different things, ignore the haters, and be yourself!!!

My mom is a science teacher, so I have been exposed to science from a young age, mostly the chemistry projects she had me help with to show her class. I also love beauty, makeup, nails, all that fun stuff. I have had people in my school comment about how they didn’t want me in their group for projects, because “she won’t want to get her hands dirty”, jokes on all of them, I recently won a district wide project award for my research project, and accepted the award in pink holo nail polish. I love that you talked about your job, it’s cool to hear you talk about that side of your life!

I appreciate you getting all serious at the end of the video, I’m a female (20 years old) and I’m a mechanic. I think it’s important not to push beauty on young girls, yes let them have their hobbies of course,but show them there is more out there than just looking pretty. I can speak from my experiences and that is I didn’t get into makeup and nails until about three months ago. (My makeup looks like a raccoon did it,but we will get there) I personally have fun with it and don’t take it seriously.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for that speech at the end. I'm a girl that loves makeup, nails, and glittery shit and am a also wildlife biologist that spends most days in field clothes or researching, covered in sweat and mud, practicing land management, and catching snakes and lizards when I can. It's so important to promote that being smart and liking science and being traditionally feminine are not mutually exclusive things. Selling science to young girls in a way that reinforces the "necessity" of the beauty industry bothers me. Just teach kids to be curious.

While I agree with the fact that a woman shouldn't have to be conventionally beautiful, I personally think that harrasment towards attractive women in the sciences is actually there, too. ''You can't be beautiful AND smart'' is also a problem. I will get A LOT of hate for this but... Also in my opinion, the companies that advertise these things and societal pressure is only one part of it. Humans ,while we like to think we are high and mighty, we are still animals. We are biological robots and we judge people based on their looks whether we like it or not. People see the appearences of a person first. I am not saying that everyone should be pressured to feel attractive, but the thing is, the interest in being attractive is not only pushed by instagram(even though that is a big issue), but by our primal instincts. The ultimate goal of an animal is to reproduce and in order to reproduce we have to find a suitable mate which often boils down to looks. Humans are nothing more than animals, even though we might be intelligent, our instincts and the way nature works is still there. And yes, I am aware of LGBT+, but that's a part of a minority and the majority of people are reproducing straight people. The way social media contributes to the issue is by making everything worse. The issue is not people being pressured to be attractive(because that will always stay with us, as I said, we are still animals), but the issue is that there are trends and things that make people think that one way of being attractive is the only way.

I hadn't even thought of it that way, I thought it was just teaching girls science can be more fun or playful but thinking about it now I 100% agree. I think Cristine under estimates her intelligence to often. She always says something really smart and intelligent but then she says she is probably wrong, only in one time she said that she was wrong, she has plenty of knowledge and she says things that are smart. I don't know if she is joking or she really doesn't believe she is smart but Cristine is much likely to be the smartest youtuber I am watching. I actually watched the show when it came out. I was thrilled at the idea of a show which was marketed as a team of girls who use their intelligence to basically be secret agents. I quite honestly could get past most of the unbelievable plot elements which seem to come naturally with shows marketed to pre-teen girls, but I got actively angry when the girls would randomly switch between smart and stupid in an attempt to "prove they're cool and know science." Like excuse me? The whole point was to show you didn't have to water down your personality to be likable. You could just actually, you know, be smart all the time and not just in private?? I think project mc^2 has good intentions (or at least, they want the public to think they have good intentions in order to get more publicity by preying off of the desires of their target audience) but regardless, it has been poorly executed in both the script writing of the show, and these products they're selling. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

it bothers me so much too when companies do the fakey science garbage, like as if girls/ladies require nail kits or makeup kits to get them interested in science. like, good you wanna get girls interested in science but its kinda insulting especially since they didn't include anything remotely science related (aside from the word "beaker" and mentioning gravity, lmfao). science buzzwords in a product doesnt make it a science kit, nor does it really introduce girls to actual science (such as idk teaching them about the chemical makeup of kinds of nail polish and the like). like maybe those normal science kits (like the slime kits, crystal kits, rock and mineral kits, and so on) shouldnt only be advertised towards boys. put little girls on the packaging too instead of just boys, have girls and boys in the commercials, show kids that science is for everyone. that's how you get girls into science. the thought that little girls dont like to think or learn about "gross things" and only are interested in nails, hair, and makeup is quite frankly insulting. i get a little carried away lmfao oops, but i feel so strongly towards this because god damn science is cool and it really hurt growing up to be told by teachers and adults that girls just dont do science, or that girls are bad at science and shouldn't try, or that its not ladylike to be interested in a "boy's subject". having your interests crushed by adults you look up to as a young kid is a horrible feeling, and it's not fair for girls to be discouraged from following their interests or passions just because it's science (or even math), just as it's not fair for boys to be discouraged from following their interests in things seen as traditionally feminine (even though it happens less and boys generally are given higher marks or paid better when they DO end up in a woman dominated subject or field). it's simply not fair for any child to be discouraged from following their interests or learning about a subject.

oh yeah, totally, jade! i didn't mean to downplay cosmetology at all, haha. kits like these are just not anywhere close, they're just an extremely watered down form that doesn't teach a single thing beyond 'drop the nailpolish in the water and GRAVITY does a thing! but we're not gonna explain how it works, it just does because its SCIENCE!' and that's just simply uninteresting and not informative.

I really appreciate how real you are with us and I think that it is dumbing down beauty as science like. Girls get that kinda shit all the time. I'm female and I studied computer science and I still get people who look down on me for not having a "girl career" like??? Girls can do science and math AND they can cry over fashion and makeup and cute things too. It's so dumb. Anyway. I'm glad you're being a positive role-model for young girls and encourage people to stay in school :D keep being you~~

Why they didnt explain this as a function of surface tension, viscocity, or even color spectrum/light waves is a missed opportunity. Science is everywhere-even in pretty and fun things. Dumbing it down and making it about chemistry without explaining it further is an afront to the product's audience. I think any intelligent potential customer can see it as a cheap ploy and not scientifically honest.

Alethea Kelly I like your explanation better. Plus it seems whoever tried to explain the science is that it is impossible to "blend" nail polish as water and nail polish does not mix as nailpolish is like oil. It's hydrophobic.

This is a total fail as a "science" tool; maybe they should include a book about how polish works from a chemistry standpoint? And I totally agree, as a grown ass woman, that you can be interested in makeup and glitter and perfume and stuff and be smart. My friend is a science teacher and he asked me how to make perfume (a hobby) so he could explain how the base alcohol works in it to throw the scent. I thought it was a neat idea!

It's actually a product from Project MC^2 a Netflix show about incredibly smart and capable young girls who work for a secret organisation as spies. They also like being girly and watermarbled on an episode once. While explaining the science behind it. The product is a reference to that episode. It wouldn't make sense to make a rocket or something cause that wasn't in the episodes was it.
