Hey everyone, it's been a year since I got my tongue tie revised as an adult through a frenectomy procedure, and let me tell you, it's been quite the journey! In this video, I'm going to give you all an update on my experience with the tongue tie release procedure, including the pros and cons of getting an adult tongue tie revision.
While I'm really happy that I got my tongue tie revised through a frenectomy procedure, there are definitely some long-term drawbacks to consider, but on the flip side, there are also some great benefits to getting the tongue tie release surgery done as an adult. So, if you're thinking about getting an adult tongue tie revision or wondering about the long term benefits and risks of a tongue tie release procedure, you'll definitely want to watch this video.
Throughout this video, I'll be sharing my tongue tie revision story, discussing the adult tongue tie release experience, and giving you all the details that you won't hear from your tongue tie doctor. So, if you're curious about the tongue tie diagnosis, treatment, symptoms, complications, surgery recovery, exercises, or anything else related to a tongue tie, you won't want to miss this video! Let's dive right in and talk about the pros and cons of the tongue tie release procedure!
**If you missed part 1 and part 2:
➤ Infant TONGUE TIE... • Infant TONGUE TIE RELE...
Part 1 is about our infant tongue tie release experience and why we chose to do tongue tie surgery on our newborns. It also explains why I wanted to do tongue tie revision surgery myself: my tongue tie is too tight! In part 1 I addressed why I was considering an adult tongue-tie release procedure, what the tongue tie procedure looks like for an adult, and symptoms of adult tongue tie. Is it worth it to release an adult tongue tie? Should I release my adult tongue tie? I really wasn't sure at first, but you can follow along with my story to find out why I chose revision!
➤ Adult TONGUE TIE RELEASE Experience... • Adult TONGUE TIE RELEA...
Part 2 is all about my tongue tie surgery experience ... the step-by-step story of my adult tongue tie release evaluation and procedure. And how after doing some initial research and consulting with trusted medical professionals, I decided to get my adult tongue tie released. I was especially encouraged after my experience with baby tongue tie releases for my two children, because the healing process for infant tongue tie release wasn't bad (although, of course, it will be a little harder as an adult).

Where are my tongue-tied adults at? To revise or not to revise... that is the question. PS - I picked a myofunctional therapist who know how to address the issues I mentioned in the video. BETTER YET - she's virtual! If her exercises help me, I'll *actually* be able to recommend her to you. Stay tuned, friends.

I received a frenectomy yesterday morning. There is a difference from before. Before, my tongue could not even touch under my lip. Now, I can almost touch my chin. The dentist told me that after a week, I should begin exercises for my tongue, and I will be more flexible with my tongue. I was hoping I could touch my nose, but even when I begin exercise next week I doubt I'll be able to touch my nose with my tongue. I hope the soreness and pain goes away after a week.

Severe tongue tie. Tongue can only go onto lips and not out. I have migraine, tight neck and shoulders, which also can add to brain fog and vision issues. Sleep apnea. Digestive issues from how I eat. Definitely get more air when I eat and drink.

Thanks so much for posting this video. I’m a retired Lactation Consultant. Your video explains why it’s so important to get infant tongue ties revised. The data shows a very small percentage of infants with tongue ties. At least 90% of the referrals I got for problems with breastfeeding were related to tongue ties. It so easy to remedy on an infant. When done as an adult, you explain the complications that may occur. I wish you all the best in adjusting to your tongue tie revision. 😅

Hi! I had my tongue tie release done 11/3/23. I'm 53 and had been looking into this for years. About 7 years ago, I made an appointment with an oral surgeon. When I came in, he confirmed why I was there and said without knowing me, you need to consult with your dentist since I had not done that prior before he would do the procedure. There was so much wisdom in that statement. Fast forward to 2023, when a new dentist recommended I see a myofunctional therapist. She took measurements of my mouth to determine if a tongue tie release would not cause further issues. Fortunately, I passed there and I proceeded 5 weeks ago with exercises to prepare my tongue for the release. I'm so glad I passed because my tongue tie was severe. Again, I was fortunate in that the specialist who did the release had been trained by the best in the U.S. I have more exercises to do in the coming weeks but already, I noticed more movement in my neck. I shall see if it's easier to take pills, if my obstructive sleep apnea lessons and if my speech gets better. As Jen pointed out, have measurements of your mouth taken by a Myofunctional Therapist to make sure your tongue will fit nicely between your teeth and if it passes, start exercises before the release.....Great video Jen!!!!

Went to a doctor to be evaluated for Botox for TMJ pain and found out I have tongue ties. Had even seen multiple specialists in the past and worn appliances to properly align the jaw/night guards etc. None ever mentioned a tongue tie as the possible cause of my chronic pain. As I understand it there is basically no clinical research studying the connection between tongue ties and all these other symptoms so it’s not taught in medical school. I’m pretty angry that I have basically lived at the doctor for a congenital condition my entire life but this was overlooked, after having orthodontia multiple times and chronic pain for decades.

Dang I feel you. I just discovered yesterday - at 31 yrs old - that I have a tongue tie after going to a dentist for my interest in the ALF device to help my breathing and TMJ. She examined me and said "oh you're tongue tied". I've never been told that in my life... after spending 10 years in childhood with retainers for an overbite, braces twice, wisdom teeth surgery, speech therapy for speech impairment... None of them noticed I had a tongue tie??! I feel angry as well. I wish it would've gotten removed a looong time ago. Grrrr

@@Innateworth I understand that doctors who completed med school years ago weren’t taught this stuff because the research science behind all the various problems that manifest from it didn’t exist at the time. But my goodness, it’s not like tongue ties themselves are a new phenomenon. Even though mine didn’t affect speech, I still would have expected it to at least be mentioned by a dentist or noted in a chart somewhere. I guess it all depends on level of severity and if it affects breast feeding. I’m sure back in the dark ages when I was born they only bothered to do anything about it if there were feeding issues.
@Innateworth

@@iwillstom ah so they potentially were not taught to check for a tongue tie. I bet a lactation consultant would know to check, but I don't believe I had trouble breastfeeding. That helps me have some understanding. I just feel like I've had a large epiphany by discovering a tie I was born with that makes sense of the issues I'm dealing with for years. I honestly had never heard of a tongue or lip tie since yesterday. I cried last night having an "if only I knew sooner" story in my mind. Processing the emotions 😅 Now I'm just eager to get it corrected finally and have relief

@@InnateworthThe dentist I saw last week said 5 years ago she would have sent me home with Botox and a mouth guard. Now, she knows that Botox is just a bandaid for the larger problem in my case. So I think what is new is the understanding that tongue ties can affect much more than just speech and breast feeding. A smaller upper palate and mandible/overbite triggering TMJ pain and migraines, the need for orthodontia, improper tongue posture and swallowing, a smaller airway triggering sleep apnea and the body’s autonomic nervous system which heightens stress, on and on. While checking for tongue ties should have always been standard, I think it’s been overlooked often because doctors didn’t realize the scope of the lifelong effects even in mild to moderate cases.

I just had a consultation with a myofunctional therapist yesterday and she diagnosed with a grade 3 tongue tie. I have forward head posture, get migraines, experience tight neck/shoulders/traps, and have a hard time breathing through my nose. You video was the first one that came up searching for "frenectomy results"! This is a really helpful video - thank you for sharing!! I feel like you experienced a lot of the stuff I'm also experiencing. I also have a more narrow upper palate. So I'm hoping that the myofunctional therapy helps with that before and after the frenectomy.

"Massage Therapist" is the correct term. Masseuse is more archaic. A masseuse is generally associated with a massage parlor, and wouldn't know her cranium from her acetabulum. At least, that was my Massage Therapy training here on the East coast. Myofascial release is a technique that works with the fascia, but I'm intrigued to learn more about Myofunctional Therapy!

@@SnowySpiritRuby Since a prosthodontist has 3 more years of medical/school training past his DDS degree… it’s hard to find a bad one. (That’s a total of 11 years in school. 4 years for Bachelor degree, 4 years to become a DDS then the additional 3 years to become a prosthodontist) Also, each dental school ONLY takes 1-2 people a year into this program! So you must be at the TOP of your class to even be considered. *But I would start by asking your dentist who they recommend. Or you can contact your states dental licensing board to ask &/or ask who is in good standing in your area. (Also, there are only 66 dental schools in the US, and not all train for this specialty. So the numbers per year are low to gain this specialty)

As someone with a speech impediment, I totally hear you on the slight shift in teeth changing your speech. I had braces twice as a kid. About 10 years ago, I forgot to wear to retainer for like, a year, which shifted my teeth. They have been shifting a we bit ever since. For the last few years, I have noticed my speech impediment is becoming more prominent. Hopefully I can shell money out for moving my teeth around again as I needed. For now, I can eat, floss, and say most words so we'll see how things go from here.

It was offered to be released by my dentist recently and I immediately said no knowing I wouldn't be able to ever go back tomwhat I've spent the last 37 years being used to having. My fears are everything you said for cons. I'm not sure I'll ever get it done honestly. If I do I would definitely need that therapy you are talking about. However I'm not sure with those cons. The chiropractic sessions will reveal what is next for me. Maybe lasering out more of the tongue tie? We will see. But my sleep has increased so far from 3-4:30 hours to 6-9:30 hours a day. My 2 & 5 year olds are both seeing the chiropractor, then they will start therapy with the speech therapist to prep for their tongue release. I recommend getting someone who will not release the tie without a therapist's approval. That way, you have more than one set of eyes on your progress. It sounds like a lot, but it seems to be worth it so far.

Pre and post tongue myofunctional therapy is a must, and mandatory before getting a release. Pre myofunctional exercises increases the strength of the muscle and also prepares for the release for less tear. Post exercises are must after 24 hrs of the procedure. So that there is no reattachment. The wound area should heal slow as required. Also cranio sacral therapy/ Rmt massage is must one week pre and post op for the ideal realease of the muscle tension of head ,neck and shoulder.

Surgeons or dentists who perform this procedure are NOT supposed to do this without the client having been prepared with specific stretches for weeks in advance and even body work in some cases. And after care is critical in healing correctly. If they don’t know this, they are not educated in the matter and therefore should not be doing these procedures. It’s brutal.

My upper jaw is narrow, I've lived with stress and clenching in my jaw and tension in my head, neck, and shoulders. My face has disharmony and swelling from knots throughout my masseter that I'm slowly massaging away. I have a tongue tie, but dentists and even oral medicine keep telling me nah it’s fine. My tongue is also too big for my mouth, it rests between my teeth forcing my jaw open so as to not be constantly biting my tongue. From my own research, if I had a top pallet expander as a teen this would have helped. I did have an orthodontist tell me that jaw surgery and braces would help that and the jaw pain, but oral medicine docs say nope that won’t fix the pain. My inner gums are receding probably from my tongue pushing on them constantly. I’ve given up in my 30s, probably just have to deal with this forever. In my brain, fix my tongue tie which should help the pain, then reassess the surgery option but nah no one will listen. Honestly no one even listens when I say my tongue is too big for my mouth

I believe that I was born tongue-tied, but it was revised when I was too young to remember. I was also circumsized when I was minutes old, so it may have been done at that time. Today my tongue sits comfortably in my mouth, but does noticeably press its sides against my teeth, all of my teeth. I have examined my tongue shape, and it seems to have moulded itself to the contours of that interface. If I relax my jaw, the very edges of the tongue slip gently into the space between upper and lower teeth, but when I close the jaw, it feels natural to retract the tongue just enough to extricate it from the chomp. Still, I do occasionally bite it. Regarding extending my tongue upwards, that does uncomfortably strain the remaining frenulum, and I am many years healed. Also, extending my tongue out of my mouth presses the frenulum into the gap of my lower front teeth, that feels uncomfortable. Here's something weird, though. At some point, I taught myself to press my tongue to my palate and close my lips, then draw a small breath out of my mouth to create a weak vacuum that seals my mouth shut with air pressure. I did this to avoid drooling while I sleep, and it is 100% effective. BUT I eventually realized (after many years of sleeping this way) that while my jaw muscles are relaxed this way, my tongue muscle is not, and that - combined with the internal negative pressure inside my mouth - can cause me headaches. I do this maneuver all the time now, even while I am awake, and it encourages me to grind my teeth. It is a very difficult habit to break. I don't know if any of that is useful to you, but I appreciate your data collection efforts!

Funny because i did have issues associated with tongue tie before i ripped it by accident. The negative pressure thing i also do, and i think it has caused me a lot of problems like i have intense pain in the back of my head/lower neck when i swallow, it feels like a bunch of strain is there and it's been like this for almost a year now. I accidentally do this negative pressure trick just by closing my mouth.

@@LeDollDonna oh wow okay so i am curious because i recently started mewing and i have never been able to breathe through my nose until i mewed. Also do you practice correct swallowing with your tongue (as i see a lot of people recommend but also Dr. Mew with mewing) where you swallow and make sure your tongue is swallowing to the roof of your mouth instead of swallowing with your cheeks.
@LeDollDonna

@@fayedits5054 Yes i believed pressed too hard, and had wayyy too much suction in my mouth, thanks to the way my tongue is it was impossible to not have a lot of suction. I did not mess my self the first time i did it, but i was able to basically force my mouth to change shape really fast my having a lot of suction and pressure. It was equal pressure throughout my tongue tongue basically, i was and still am able to crack my hard palate open (or make a split) By accident, which is something that i've always been able to, but that with mewing and the amount of suction my mouth created probably shifted things too much. They’re going to correct my advanced tongue tie next week, and I think now I’m going to refuse it. I don’t have complications from my tie nor is it causing quality of life issues. That and considering I’ve never been told anything about prep exercises, I don’t think I want to allow it.

Just a heads up for everyone. Tie tie can result in a narrow palate leading to breathing and tmj issues in adults. Your tongue wasn't up against the top of your mouth during developmental years, so you didn't grow the bone. 99/100 orthos are afraid to do anything to help with this. If you're now in a position where you have sleep apnea, tmj, narrow smile, crowding, etc, do a consult with Dr. Ilya Lipkin. I was referred to him by another ortho and traveled 4 hours to see him.

Girrrrrrrl I wish I could have a long convo with you about jaws/tongues. My jaw journey is long, 20 years at this point. I only JUST learned I have a tongue tie yesterday. I can’t believe that, after all the specialists I’ve seen and issues I’ve had. I’d love to chat with you more about your history and experience 😂 My new-to-me Dr has a plan I might go for. I’m shy with “permanent” changes with my teeth and jaw because I have a great smile and great teeth, BUT what he’s proposing makes sense. Sleep study, then Invisalign to widen my smile. He says palates are fine but the smile is narrow on the and my tongue can’t fit, which he feels he could make fit but the widened smile plus tongue tie release. The release isn’t a sure thing in his plan. He wants me to start myo therapy halfway through wearing trays, then evaluate if I should get released. I know a release can’t be undone but if trays don’t work I imagine I can do something to put my teeth back like they always were… I’m on IG if you feel like reaching out. Always down for a talk about the mouth - lord knows my husband is tired of me talking about it 😅

A tongue tie release should ALWAYS be preceded by, and followed up with, Myofunctional therapy. Also, if there isn’t enough room in your mouth then when you free it up, where’s it going to go? Sometimes it falls farther back into the airway at night and your breathing/apnea gets worse. And during waking hours you may find yourself “splinting” your tongue (holding it between your teeth) or pushing forward, because it’s trying to escape confinement. So you might have done better with additional expansion before the release. It’s wide enough when your tongue can suction without overflowing onto the teeth (you showed how much yours overflows). Myofunctional therapy will help improve tone, coordination and range of motion. Sometimes it will even reveal that the release was incomplete or that scarring has taken away some of the benefits. You’d get less scarring if you were doing myo through the whole process. So the initial surgery is called a “release”. And if it needs to be done again to correct problems, that’s what a “revision” is.

I’ve been working with a myo and she’s done measurements and said I have a very narrow palate. I’ve mentioned numerous times that my tongue feels too big for my palate but she’s never said anything about expansion or the tongue not having enough room after a release. Now my release is scheduled for tomorrow and I’m panicking a bit.

no doctors are checking on that simple procedures. But that's interesting. I have this tie too, im cutting it slowly by myself using a syringe needle. So i do it slowly and about 2mm a time. And i've noticed how my neck is getting less and less forward. I noticed this connection with the neck and shoulders. My tongue now is about 0.5 inches longer than it was at the beginning, now the tie aria is getting thicker compared to as it was closer to the tip of the tongue. But im not at hurry. I noticed that if i cut more than 2mm a day it may be uncomfortable, but 1-2mm a day in the evening goes unnoticeable at all next morning .And slowly but steadily my tongue is getting bigger. And the body has time to slowly adjust. But i did relearn how to pronounce th and r lol i also noticed that when i was using a sharp new needle to make cuts it could bleed a little. But then i dull the needle so it's not that sharp to cut but rather scratch. And scratching is a bit painful to do but it doesn't bleed at all, and it heals much faster and doesn't cause any wound like sensation afterwards when i eat or drink. Im wondering why scratching is so different than cutting even tho it's the same 1-2mm area. i also noticed that in my mouth my low teeth are shifting clockwise a bit, so than low molar on the left is closer to the neck that low molar on the write side. And almost all the frenulum is on the right side of the tongue, it's not symmetrical. Probably the tie tongue somehow effected my teeth. If i release my tongue further, will it shift my jaw or teeth? i don't want them to shift, they are working good as they are now?

I neck for example is also pretty stiff and I always felt like my pronunciation was sometimes odd and the cause for it being my tounge. I also struggle with the thought that it has a bad effect on when I kiss with tounge. Could it be possible that it affects my kissing and in general do you think thata closer follow-up of the tounge tie topic is necessary?

I find this so mind boggling because my tongue tie situation was identified at birth (1958) and the doctor told my mother that it can be dealt with later if I have a problem with breast or bottle feeding or much later if I cannot speak properly ... well ... I never had a problem with either ... as a matter of fact my speaking was much better than anyone who wasn't tongue tied ... including my 3 siblings ... up until now. This year, I needed to get dentures, and now my mouth feels cramped, and I have a have a whistling lisp, so I am contemplating getting my ankyloglossia snipped.

Some believe that if ties are cut early, teeth will likely have less crowding due to the tongue natural resting place at the roof, spreading the palate during growth and development. Moreover, if your tie led to mouth breathing and snoring, it most certainly led to increase risk of tooth decay.
