I adore that you actually went along with their stims!! That would make me feel so much better in therapy if they acknowledged my stims rather than pretending I'm not doing it...

Hi Ryan, I've been watching your videos for quite some time now. When I was choosing on a career path in my last year of high school your content helped inspired me make the decision to pursue music therapy as a professional. It has been a very challenging four years. In a couple months I will graduate and begin my internship to become certified. These last few semesters have taken a lot out of me emotionally and I was unsure whether I wanted to practice afterwards. I looked you up again today to get some ideas for an assignment and was brought to tears by this video. Thank you for sharing your practice and reminding me what I am in this for.

Hi Ryan. Thank you for this video. My daughter is a freshman at Florida State University, majoring in Music Therapy. I'm going to forward this to her for inspiration. She's already done some observations, and is being drawn to people with dementia. She loves working with them, and seeing their faces light up when a song from their childhood is played. It's like they're transported back in time. Amazing.

...That ain't hard, dude. Not everyone with ASD has trouble speaking, y'know. Some do, some don't. It's not "amazing" that he can speak in full sentences- many, many people with ASD are actually very intelligent, just not all of them express themselves, and that's okay- so don't act like it's some magical feat that he can talk.

Great😃video. You are an inspiration to many people What is your thoughts on using meditation music or yoga for curing ASD
@RyanJuddMusic
@RyanJuddMusic 4 жыл бұрын
Meditation music and yoga don't "cure" autism. In fact, the only thing that seems to lessens the behaviors to the point where a child might not meet the diagnostic criteria, is a bio-medical approach, but even that is quite controversial with mixed results that rarely led to a huge reduction in behaviors.

Has a client ever tried to grab the guitar from you or thrown an instrument? I ask because I play guitar and synthesizers and have been using some techniques like yours with my 5 year old son who is autistic but he frequently wants to grab the guitar or bash the synthesizer keys (not angrily, he loves it but gets too excited I guess?). I actually got him a cheap kids guitar and even gave him one of my old synths but he always wants to “take over” with whatever instrument I’m playing or hit them out of excitement. So I kind of gave up for the time being (music gear is expensive 😬). I try to explain to him “If you don’t use nice hands with the instruments, we can’t play.” but he just doesn’t seem to understand what I’m saying. Thank you!
@RyanJuddMusic
@RyanJuddMusic 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Molly, I have that happen on a weekly basis! Good call on getting the cheap guitar. If he wants to take over an instrument, cool! Just grab a different one yourself or do some body percussion or singing to accompany him. Follow his lead! You can also use sturdy percussive instruments like shape drums or floor drums. I hope that helps!

Get a set of drums. As long as the sticks stay parallel to the drum head, he CAN'T damage it. Trust me, I'm a drum major. I bet it's because he's a drummer, lol. They make kid's sticks from Vic Firth, but he might not need them. I had a boy 14 months use mine just fine. Just sit behind them and prevent them from hitting anything that shouldn't be hit. Like themselves. Don't buy garbage, but a Tama RockStar or Ludwig kit or even a Pac-D should be easy to find and cheap.

The reality: A, nowhere has a music therapy major yet (major city I live in does, but it's HUNDREDS of miles away), so you can get AFA in music ed at city college. Then soak up everything before going to a much more expensive school. Don't waste Pell grants there. Save them for a good and very expensive school later. You get 12 semesters free. PS learn how to be pushy. You'll need it. You will often hear wrong info, so make VERY sure.

I have heard a lot about music therapy for Autistic children.. But this video seems to be contrived (acting) taken in one long sitting. Why I say so? The dress of both teacher and the boy remains unchanged, their position remains unchanged, so much so that something kept on the floor on right hand side doesn’t change its position. This somehow fails to convince me about the real efficacy of music therapy.
@RyanJuddMusic
@RyanJuddMusic 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, this was taken from one session, but in no way is it "acting" or contrived. I'm sorry that you see it like this, but it is just not true. Although it helps many people to see music therapy in action, you can read the research done by major universities that shows the efficacy of music therapy with people with autism here. www.musictherapy.org/assets/1/7/bib_autism10.pdf
