Nice to know that my XR is capable of doing the rough stuff (not so sure about the skill/talent of its owner though ... LOL) but I think I will stick to the blacktop as much as possible. I have had to do sections of graded gravel and clay dirt road while riding through the mountains near where I live and the OEM tyres were just ok. I will need new tyres soon and am thinking i might go to a 70:30 option so that I have a bit more security when i do hit the dirt.

Because this is a road-oriented bike, not an off-road machine. Although it does do a surprisingly good job at going off-roading, much better than I expected.

old old post to reply to but now as even then my comment would still be "WHY??" There are plenty of bikes with similar power already set up for off-road so why bastardize such an expensive motorcycle spending even more money on it when it still is not going to be as properly focused as other choices?? A BMW GS or hey even a Multi Strada if you want to be a little more eccentric with your adventure riding that comes with a 19" front....

Whole list of ADV bikes that would do better on the dirt than the XR. But not the same performance on the pavement. 17" front sure isn't optimal and dirt tire selection is very limited in sportbike sizes. i-4 with even firing order isn't the best for dirt traction either. I'd say 1290 Super Adventure R would give the XR a real run for the money overall. The S model would do as well on the pavement too.

I own an XR and had a GS and I get it, you're trying to create content, but the XR is for the street. The GS is much more capable in these conditions. However, cash spent ridiculously will buy you views.

Im actually trying to decide I have a 2017 gs and theres a xr thats a good deal and thinking of switching I only realistically go 70 road 30 off so if the xr still can do the 30 im probably going to switch

Modern Looks what did you get? I would get s1000xr. Gs feels massive. S1000xr probably easier to handle off-road and pick up alone.

Not sure exactly why but I seem to instantly loose respect for people who do burn outs on motorcycles ....or any vehicle for that matter. It just strikes me as utterly senseless and wasteful ....it demonstrates no real skill so all it is doing is destroying a tire and stinking the air up.....just dumb if you ask me....On the other hand a nice wheely or stoppy? Thumbs up!
