Advanced Alatreon Tips - Smoke Bombs, Dragon Weapons, Damage Modifiers and Other Tricks | MHW IB

Hello again! This time I have my top tips for taking out Alatreon. These are more advanced pieces of information, varying from the fairly well known, to the basically completely unknown/novel, so hopefully theres something here you didn't know, or at least something explained in more detail than you knew previously!
We talk about the rage mode damage multiplier, the direction of the lightning bolt attacks, a few underused openings (at least by randoms online) like the flying breaths and explosions, multiple ways to down Alatreon when it flies, using flash pods (and when they do and dont work), the ghille mantle, and even smoke bombs, and also we cover the elemental mode hitzone modifiers, and the elemental damage weapon modifiers (which apply purely towards stopping the escaton judgement nova move, rather than actually applying any extra elemental damage)

I have a spreadsheet which collects all sorts of data on Monster Hunter World Iceborne that people ask about a lot - things like the materials needed to upgrade the best charms (e.g. handicraft, expert etc), a list of all the guiding land monster drops and gathering nodes (plus it's searchable), what materials you need for every possible augment (attack, affinity, defence, health, slot, element/status) in the game, etc:

It also includes things like a list of ALL the 4 slot decorations (including even the rare 12 ones which ONLY drop from sealed feystones) so you know the best deco's to aim for when farming. It even has detailed images for the guiding land gathering nodes (the one's that drop materials like the guiding dragonbones/crystals etc) which you need for custom weapon upgrades/augments!
My list of guiding land drops can be sorted either by drop type (so it finds the monster to fight for a particular part) or you can use it to just find the parts belonging to any monster (no more pulling your hair out over how to get those Enchanting Finehide/Trancehide for your health augments!). This goes up to and includes the tempered elders (speaking of which, check out my 5 slot tempered investigation farming macro if you haven't already!)
It also has a Safi'Jiiva relic checklist to easily monitor which awakened weapons you're missing from the new siege!

When Alatreon is thundering all around a thunder never strikes two times in the same spot. So if you want to be safe with ranged weapons you should place yourself in a spot already been hit.

another useful tip is flinch shoting Alatreon at the very start of the event quest mission. As soon as you land in the arena he will roar, you can i-frame it (use evasion mantle for the boost if you want but not necessary) or just use rocksteady mantle to ignore it. Clutch claw to the right side of Alatreon's face (your left side) and hit twice then flinch shot. Theres a rock wall right behind he can hit but bear in mind that sometimes his initial attack after the roar might move him a bit off the right position but I always use this strat at the beginning to do good damage to the horns with the wall bang and gives you a good chance to charge your phials (I main CB). Nice tip, but thr horns take no damage in fire or ice mode, they only have hp on dragon mode. So focusing the head when it is on fire or ice is useless unless you are trying to stun

Note that if alatreon tries to do the lightning strike attack while you're hanging on his head, he might veer off slightly to the left and miss the wall entirely when you launch him. You need to slightly delay the 2nd turn to prevent this.

The Crystal bursts are also Very useful to stall alatreon while he is flying giving a teammate time to flinch shot him out of the sky in multiplayer you can also use the counter clutch claw from lance and then change stances while grappled

A side note, when he does the lightning strikes AOE, you can punish him between front and back legs the lightning doesn't hit there.

Quick caveat about the ineffective nature of Dragon Damage: For Hunting Horn users, bringing even the rarity 11 Alatreon HH (due to the song list) can provide both enough dragon damage and team-wide elemental boosts to merit ignoring the "ooOOoooo but it's not OpITimAL" issue. However, you still could bring along a Safi elemental horn with the same song list if you're really struggling but the numbers Alatreon Revival can hit are practically unmatched.

I have noticed that Alatreon consistently uses his nova roughly every 6 to 8 minutes. If you cart before he uses his nova, he will wait until you are back in the arena to nuke.

One other tip that I see many people not doing: Get those crystal bursts before dropping into the fight. You can shot them at him if he acting too wild and that will pause some of his attacks. Very good if your stuck on the ground and he ready to shot an attack at you. Great video btw. Keep em coming.

Thanks for these tips! I tried a bunch of times with pogs, and finally killed him with a healer lbg build using his own weapon XD. You can still dish out some decent damage while buffing and keeping your team alive, as long as the other three are competent. I find that the time you give your team to fight instead of heal more than makes up for whatever less dps you lose by going healer.

There are at least 2 very important tips that are missing i believe here: 1. You can only damage and break horn in dragon mod. 2. As he makes dragon explosion to change to dragon mod, in front of Alatreon's head is safe zone, you can just position there and land free hit, with SnS, longsword or greatsword it can even be insant hornbreak

That's a LOT of excellent tips, many that I didn't know before. It seems the "dragon" damage one isn't common knowledge - I see a lot of random people, in multiplayer, bringing dragon damage weapons. And we fail to make the DPS check a LOT when there's multiple of them in group. This makes a lot more sense to me now.....

Today i've made it today solo and i would recommend to get enough alatreon parts to already be able to create at least 3 sets of alatreon armor + alatreon bow, that should be pretty easy with partbreaker 3 skill. With 2 Sets of Alatreon armor you can already get higher elemental damage but with 3 parts you can easy get an elemental resistance from 20+ for all elements. Without element ammo, you won't be able to survive the nova, so for solo i guess a bow with at least fire and ice ammo is really needed, so Soulfire Rasp Blaze or even Xeno Neqiina + should be a good alternative. With my set i've also used 2 parts of namielle y armor for namielle divinity for even more elemental damage. Razorsharp charm is a must have for more ammo, i've also had attack boost 3, health boost 3, fire, water, ice, thunder and dragon res lv3, fire and ice attack lv3, recovery up lv2, fortify, minds eye and free meal 1. For solo free meal is also a must have as you have a chance to have more health options to survive alatreon's nova more often. (in my previous tries i was always out of health options, so i just traded a decoration for elemental attack with a free meal decoration. So i believe tigrex/bruterex and even MR Kulve Armor would be good choices to defeat Alatreon because of the free meal secret, i haven't tried Nargacuga Armor parts as it doesn't have much decoration slots, so i would not recommend that set. I've tried a flash pod while alatreon is in the air, works just fine one time to bring him down, the second time nothing happens. So from my point of view, this fight could be faster with critical boost lv3 and critical element skill but to be honest, i haven't found any kjarr lbg with rapid fire ice and fire element and all the kjarr lbg only comes with fire or ice element, so with two players it would be an option but not for solo, so another option for true critical element would be 4 parts of silver rathalos armor but haven't tried it yet. Another little help would be a palico with a poison weapon, the chance is small that alatreon get's poisoned as it will take some time but that's always some extra damage for free. So it seems that there is some kind of elemental damage check you have to make until you will be able to survive it's nova but that's much better than a monster leaving the quest, so all i have to say, Alatreon is a bit challenging but it's a fun fight, i've enjoyed it a lot but i will try some things to get my armor a bit better to do much more damage. I didn't make any horn breaks but it wasn't really needed, i've made enough elemental damage even if it was in dragon mode, so you don't have to worry to brake the horns to finish him. For those elecric bolt attacks (also as the fire attacks) sometimes Alatreon makes a few in a row, i would recommend to run towards him while he is doing that or do a roll towards him, that's the best chance to get not hit by that attacks. All the spot bolt attacks, mostly under him is a save spot but if not, timing is the key to get not hit.

So I recommend building the Alatreon LBG and upgrading it to it's final version ASAP, I did this before I even defeated him by using a Sticky HBG with partbreaker 3 and Palico plunderblade only focus on the wings until he changes elements the focus the horns only rinse and repeat fortitude helps cause you will be carting by breaking the horns you will have a chance of getting the super rare dragonsphire as a reward after you fail the quest. Your best armor to use is either 5pcs Safi or 3 pcs Safi, 2 pcs Alatreon I go with the Alatreon head and waist beta versions and the rest Safi beta as well, but you seam to want a more defensive build so swap the head with Safi and the legs with Alatreon alpha's. You really don't need all that elemental resistances just get blight 3 , if you can't reach blight 3 go with dragon res 3 and thunder res 3 those are the worst blights to have cause dragon nulifies all you elemental dmg and thunder will stun you if you get knocked over while your blighted with it. I also don't recommend free meal unless your running a widerange build to help your team you just need to optimize you item bag better. I will give you some helpful tips on what you should have on you for healing; 10 mega potions 10 potions 10 honey This will let you craft another 10 so you will have 20 mega potions total. I recommend only making another 5 mega potions then saving the rest of you honey for mega nutrients to make max potions. 2 max potions 5 mega nutrients 5 nutrients 10 mandragora mushrooms This will let you craft 5 more max potions then 5 more mega nutrients (mega nutrients do require honey so don't use it all up making mega potions) then another 5 more max potions so you will have a total of 12 max potions 2 dust's of life 4 gloamgrass buds 3 lifepowders 10 godbugs 6 bitterbugs This will let you make another 4 dust's of life's so you will have 6 total. You can make another 6 lifepowdes so you will have 9 total 1 ancient potion For when you cart before you can eat again 5 astera jerky 5 great sushifish's if you have any not really needed TBH Only use when he is doing his nova use it as soon as your health reaches half you should only need to take one per nova plus a mega potion, lifepowder, or dust's of life So in summery you will have; 15-20 mega potions 7-12 max potions 6 dust's of life 9 lifepowders 1 ancient potion That's a lot of healing I have never used all of it in one fight. 2:40 Even easyer, you can just stand on his Frontlegs, you never ever get hit by that attack on them. You may loose Headdamage, but the Frontlegs are bigger Ele Weakspots anyway. Also no Thunderbolt strikes twice on the same Place.

Dual Blade Arts: Instant Horn Clip Technique!!! Assassin mantle + smoke bomb, instant demon dance when hidden facing head only hitting the head. Solo only. Been using this all the time preiceborne. Btw ez sling shots are when it’s on the ground prepping for the frost vomit from the air, just clutch and fire. To avoid its spinning breath attack, just go str8 beneath it for clutch claw to it before it does it. Sometimes I don’t like to run to him so just catch a ride by timing a clutch when he speeds.

I knew about the damage increase, but I prefer to not have him enraged when he enters Dragon Active so that I can still flinch shot him and then break his horns. Also, Lance having a 1 multiplier breaks my heart. Capcom hates elemental lance.

I mean its only 600 elemental damage, its very easy to hit that with a decent set. And if you want to invest nothing into element you can do that albeit its very hard to reach the threshold for most players.

Thanks for checking on the timer for nova, looks like testing didn't line up with my observation; good to know. I will wait and see what testing produces, but it really makes me wonder what dictates it. I'm also glad you worked out the dragon maths, average 0.4 modifier is much lower than 0.8 for the appropriate element, and even if you get pushed to the wrong element for the 3rd phase you still have the raw component to finish the hunt with. Even the off-element (water/thunder) averages to 0.6 which is better than dragon's 0.4. Dragon is worse even in the hunts where you cant break the horns at all; you maintain the consistent 0.4 versus swapping between beneficial (0.8) and detrimental (0.25) for an average of 0.5. the only instance that dragon is better is if you would have otherwise started with the detrimental elements but still managed to break horns. but at this point i feel like its going to be a rare group to pull off, unless you are all running dragon and focusing the head. I'm still a little fuzzy on shot hitzones pre and post tenderize, and how they apply the elemental damage, but that is something I just need to do some reading on. Looks like LBG really isn't the way to go on this hunt unless you want to simplify the hunt to "safety strafe and tape down the trigger". Time to dust off my LS, or actually take the time to learn CB. :D

no problem! its possible it IS on a timer, but is affected by things like rage mode and time spent in elementless mode or stuff like that, but basically i found it not consistent enough for me to try and rely on for safety. i didnt do a huge amount of testing on it tho so who knows and yeah agree with the analysis entirely. Another time it can help is when you're overshooting the ele topple in right phase but under in wrong phase, and not able to horn break. In that case, dropping to dragon might help you consistently topple instead of missing every other one good luck with the weapon choice! yeah im struggling with lbg tho the ala one seems decent so idk

@@ConsOA I was looking into more runs, and it very well may be a "lesser of two values" where it goes to 6m if you don't deal enough damage, or earlier if you break some sort of threshold. I was watching the P3 Hame and it gets pushed to dragon in about a minute, and its dead in 2. Might suggest a forced phase transition based on health. Rage mode is a big deal as well, too many variables without trying to isolate in testing.

I'm definitely leaning in the camp of Alatreon's Escaton Judgement is time based. When husband and I were first learning the monster's moves and we weren't trying to do breaks or topple, Alatreon does EJ roughly every 6 minutes. 3 minutes in fire/ice active, 3 minutes in dragon, EJ, then 3 minutes in the opposite starting element, 3 minutes of dragon, EJ, repeat. What I didn't pay attention to was if elementless added extra time (IE: 3 minutes elementless from topple time). Also, this timer seems to keep ticking even if you are killed and sent back to camp, but he needs someone there to use EJ (no waiting out the timer if you're solo and was close to EJ use, but didn't quite topple yet).

Oh yes It sucks so much if your solo and he carts you halfway though his dragon phase before you topple him, it is so fun to land and immediately cart again in less the 30 seconds. I wish I could send my Palico down to take the hit for me, LOL.

Personally on the big ice and fire AoE's I've been clutch clawing and getting a relatively safe head softening. Also on the lightning storm, the lightning doesn't typically hit the same place twice so pick a spot it just hit next to you and your good. On the elemental numbers I haven't had much issue just running Alatreons weapons, I've beat it with it's IG, LS, CB and Switchaxe, using Safi Head, Chest and Arms and Alatreon Waist and Legs, just keep it at it and pay attention, learn what you can and can't punish with your weapon and you'll be good. Health boost and Blight Resist are a must.

It's funny how I ran this with full party with all ice weapons, but we were all wiped every time since we couldn't deal enough damage (like 30 runs, no kidding). Then I ran the party with dragon weapons, and it took less than 5 runs to finally beat this guy. After that, I always run with Alatreon weapon. I'm sure ice might do more damage, but when it comes to multiplayer, count on your randoms who carry"Alatreon" weapons, because it can at least mean that they beat the special assignment and are familiar with how to bring down this monster. *Btw, watch out for those trolls/noobs who bring thunder, water, abnormal statuses weapons* -_-

Alatreon weapons also have high enough Dragon damage to be comparable to other elements after the 0.1 multiplier. A lot of guides dont talk about this.

Great video cons! So, since elemental damage modifiers occur for every weapon for reaching the elemental cap, would you say it's fine bringing whichever weapon you are most comfortable with in party? My teammates only use a couple weapons like lance and hammer and i was worried we wouldn't reach the elemental cap unless they switched to a more elemental weapon type and learned it

Lance is a pretty good elemental weapon GL not so much. Also Hammers do fairly well you just have to learn the moves that deal the most elemental dmg in Motion values such as the Spin win charge and the Charge 3 grapple attack

-Alot of his attacks can be evaded by just running/side stepping, not needing to dodge roll even when unsheathe. but this does NOT apply well with heavy weapons tho. -During his flying frost breath attack, you should clutch claw to him to avoid damage AND tenderize a part, howerever during fire breathes you will still get damaged. -It is safer to fight him close and on his sides, therefore use close range modifiers and ballistics jewel on bowgun/bow users. -Evade window is more helpful in the fight than running full def/resist builds. -Avoid using Rocksteady mantle, its more like a bait mantle. -Glider mantle slotted with 2x evade 4+ jewels is a better alternative. @@ConsOA His Transition Dragon Nova is a good punish move since the dmg time on the hit box is very short. The Hit box itself is small and sticks fairly close to the body.

I've soloed him with his dragon weapons with little difficulty (in terms of hitting the ele check) outside of bad RNG with his moves. On the flip side, I've been in groups where 2 or more people were doing no damage during his shift because they were banking on breaking the horns. That paired with bad RNG and we were wiped. You do have to be more offensive and fast to hit the check with dragon but I'll take consistent damage throughout the fight over potentially not doing anything.

I do actually recommend dragon and not going for the horns on most runs, I've seen the most consistent wins even with randoms. If you want sub 8 mins with your friends that are actually good at the game, use fire or ice. Lastly always bring a healer and have high dragon res or blightproof.

Definitely not the way to go. Dragon barely does any damage in both ice and fire active state. If you want to run an element that's effective in all 3 active states you're better off bringing thunder or water. Dragon element is by far the worst.

I don't think I saw you mention this in the previous video, but his horn only takes part damage during dragon active and dragon active only. This means that his horn is immune to part damage when you element topple him, even during dragon active, because he is considered to be out of dragon active state for the duration of the topple (he is 'elementless'). You still want to hit his horns for big DPS since they're so soft, but you need to keep in mind that you are basically making zero progress towards the horn break (if you or your team are struggling to do it for some reason). You might want to use the opportunity to do a head tenderize if you're a bow user (tenderize only increases his head hitzone from 85 to 88.75 for sever and impact so it's not that important for melee users unless you're relying on WEX to cap crit).

For flash I think it's not once per hunt, I flashed Ala twice. I think there's cooldown on dropping Ala using flash pods. Also, the best ele when solo if you can't break horns is thunder/water instead of dragon, huh. Also also, I think the nova cycle is fixed at 5 min per cycle when a hunter is present (within Ala's sight and not on camp) and can be prolonged by flinching

I beat him yesterday solo for the second time (I switched consoles lol). I didn't kill him after the second horn break so he went ice active on me, BUT I was still able to take him down by being persistent through the loop. If you're struggling to beat him, just go hard on your ice element and if he wipes you once its fine, he'll go back to your effective element afterwards. If you're trying to be fast though, idk maybe build a new set, optimize your hunt, idk what else to do lol.

You can always claw flinch after he does the double/triple ground pound with the arms if he is in the air, as well as when he does the dragon explosion in tha air!

Those numbers are slightly off. Dragon works best all around. In a team you can have one teammate run the opposite element it starts in, Evening Star high ice, Death Star high fire. This has worked best for my team. Please do not flash, don't miss out on that free flinch shot knock down damage, equip temp mantle and clutch claw attack to weaken parts and stay consistent with damage while enraged in air, have a teammate with crystalburst stall it. This has worked best for us. Also when he does his spread lightning it's best to hug it's stomach area to keep attacking, lightning does not spawn there, stay away from feet unless your good with longsword you can use that for foresight hits.

I did my fastest run with the correct element dual blades, but had to die once to change weapons because I could not break it's head the second time before the second escaton judgment. I go with dragon and i seem to be able to do it consistently, but long. Went with with a 3 man team with dragon longswords and we would do it in around 15 mins or so. Though i think it's only true on faster hitting weapons. Even dragon gunlance works him surprisingly

The real question is dragon or water for an allrounder to help people hit the ele check. Cause in fire mode water does ok. While dragon does ok in dragon mode. So water should be a bit better when it´s the fire starter quest. Since you do ok dmg and you are not useless if he gets into ice somehow.

Been trying the fight using SA. I've got to the point where the DPS check is easy, the real challenge is reliably breaking the horns. Wall Banging is super inconsistent and buggy hit boxes, so this leaves me with downing from flight. I can down him in flight, but by the time I recover from landing and run to him I get like 4 hits in on the horns and cannot break them. After that hes enraged, and that means no more hitting the head. Kinda stumped.

The horn break strategy just doesn't work with my team we try using ice for the special assignments did not get the elemental Flinch not once but when we switch to dragon we comfortably get the elemental flinch not needing to worry about the horn really does change how you fight him

So you do more raw damage on the head but more elemental damage on the arms. With a couple elemental dual blades, let's say both horns are already broken, where should you attack to do most overall damage to Alateron, head or arms?

The main thing that helped me was to never do this quest with randoms if you're going to go with a group make sure it's people that you know and you can communicate with solo is the easiest way

Either that or join a group with a person(s) using Alatreon Dominator. They usually know what they're doing (totally not just saying that because I use it....lol). It seems more likely to get a decent team in the event quests than it was for the special assigment, tbf

I think ice mode is significantly more easy than fire mode because he tends to spam that grounded ice breathe move that leaves him super vulnerable. I hate that dragon seems to be mostly ineffective against him. I like when tough monsters reward you with weapons that are effective against them.

My build was kjarr CB ice augmented for health, full Safi b armor, health boost 3, full ice attack, one capacity, 3crit boost, and enough critical eye to get to 100% affinity, the rest were random skills like blight resistance, and evade window.

Huh why is SA's modifier exactly like DB's and Bow of all things, while ZSD does a bunch of elemental damage you need quite a big opening to do it. I only manage to contain "a lot of its power", I don't feel like SA is at the same level as Bow and DBs when it comes to elemental damage, then again maybe it's just me.

Meeting the elemental threshold will cause alatreon to topple, during this time he is in elementless state.

Are you certain about the flash pods? I'm almost positive I've flashed him more the. Once a hunt. At the end of MHW or maybe the start of IB they changed flash pods to have a cool down period where the monster cant be flashed again, maybe that's what you're seeing?

You're wrong about the flash pods. I've flashed him at least twice in 1 hunt. You just have to make sure he's not enraged then give it about 5 minutes in between flashes and you'll easily get 2, possibly 3 per hunt. I've done this myself so I know it works. Also, any monster drops a shiny part when flinched into a wall. Otherwise, awesome information!

If you just need horns, then don't worry about killing him. Take a weapon that you can break with fairly well and either purposely fail or return from the quest. You'll keep your horn break rewards.

stickies/slicing both work depending on your lbg keep him unenraged if possible so you can flinch shot him into the wall sleep + bombs/mines do a nice burst of damage too! but yeah its tough to break the horns with ele lbg for sure
